My doctor never went over the diet for Coumadin, except I was told not to eat greens, like brocoli, etc. What happens when one goes off Coumadin and one eats greens again, will a clot form? I am all confused about this? Also, I was wondering if I should be going to a pulmonary doctor instead of my primary health care giver? Then another doctor may allow me to buy one of the machines to use in between lab visits and also after I go off the medicine to see what is going on! Needless to say I am upset...Any help out there would be much appreciated, Thanks so much, Patti

Cynthia, I am 32 years old, have been doing Lovenox injections since April 09 due to having clots in each lung. My dr has decided without any testing that I should take the coumadin for the the rest of my life...what can I expect and would I be better off doing the shots instead? Any info you can give is appreciated.

Hi Patti, Your docs should do some blood tests to see if you clot easily- i.e. lupus anticoagulant, or antiphospholipid syndrome. Being on Warfarin really sucks though. So if you can get off... GET OFF! Don't take any fake hormones like birth control!I haven't been right since. Green leafy veggies have Vit K in them and that causes your blood to thicken. But you need them to be healthy--Quite a quandary.
I've been on Warfarin for a long time. But it's not working at all. It was 1.4 the other day and that's with 20-25 mg daily. They are going to put me on Lupus meds and say maybe that would regulate the INRs. I'm hesitant about taking any antimalarial drugs and also about being on warfarin for life. But since I'm not therapeutic and having TIAs then that may be my only choice.... Lovenox for life! That's what my doctor suggested on Wednesday. It wouldn't be too bad if I was 98 years old. But I'm 28 so 2x/day in my belly is pretty frightening. Sucks. But whatever.

HELLO I BELIEVE THE SOME PEOPLE JUST CANT TOLLERATE COUMADIN. I HAD A VALVE REPLACEMENT IN NOV AND WAS PUT ON THE COUMADIN. IT IS 4 MONTHS LATER AND I HAVE BEEN IN THE HOSPITAL 8 TIMES. MY INR SHOULD BE 2.5 TO 3. IN ANY GIVING DAY I GO FROM 1S TO 4S. I HAD A HEART ATTACK DUE TO A BLOOD CLOT ON MARCH 3RD. MY LATEST TRIP TO THE HOSPITAL I WOKE UP GUMS BLEEDING BOWELS COMPLETE BLOOD AND WAS ADDMITTED WITH SEVER INTERNAL BLEEDING. I HAD TO HAVE 2 PLASMA TRANSFUSIONS AND 5 BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS AND SHOTS OF VITIAM K TO STOP THE BLEEDING. THE HOSPITAL TOOK ME RIGHT OFF THE COUMADIN AND PUT ME ON THE LEVENOX SHOTS AND THE BLEEDING MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED. STILL NO ANSWER WHY! THE SHOTS DONT BOTHER ME, THE BRUSING IS VERY VERY UNCOMFORTABLE BUT, TO BE HOME WITH M Y CHILDREN AND NOT IN THE HOSPITAL EVERY 4TH DAY IS WORTH IT. I HAVE 4 DOCTORS THAT WANT TO KEEP ME ON THE LEVENOX AND GOT MY INSURANCE TO APPROVE IT HOWEVER MY CARDIOLOGIST IS TOTALLY AGAINST IT. HE IS REFUSING THIS AS AN OPTION. HE IS INSTANT I GO BACK ON THE COUMADIN. MAYBE HE CAN CHANGE MY MIND BUT, RIGHT NOW (NO WAY)EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. I GUESS COUMADIN ISNT MADE FOR ME.

My partner is in the hospital with a blood clot in her subclavian and now brachial safalic...also in jugular vein in left neck. She has been in and out of the hospital now every other week for the past 5 weeks, they in the past few weeks were able to get her INR up with coumadin and Lovinox, the minute that they stopped the lovenox and sent her home a week later INR back down to 1. Now she is back in again and taking 10 mg of coumadin and lovinox inj and her INR keep falling....not sure what should be done, or can be done...She has an appt with hematologist in a few weeks..but this is getting rediculous, that every week we need to go back to the hospital because the coumadin wont obsorb...Anyone have any thoughts on this or recommendations...we have been through the ringer on this one...The last time she had a clot was from a pic line 18 yrs ago...we don't know how this one developed and we don't know why she is still developing them...they say it could be because of one of her upper ribs which might need to come out...but they are not giving us to much info...any suggestions will be great...
thanks

has anyone experienced hip replacement? if so what are the benefits of cumodin vs lovonex? I've been told that there is more swelling and bleeding with lovonex by one Dr-- but another says that if there is a bleed it is worse with cumodin. It is stricly a matter of personal preference w/i the medical community. Has anyone experienced hip replacement w one or the other method?

My father was diagnosed with bilateral pulmonary embolisms in each lung. He is an 82 yr old man. He was discharged and told he had to be on lovenox for 6 months. Hi insurance will hardly cover this medication and his co-pay for a 2 week supply is over $1,500, which is outrageous. His dr. says that he will need to be in this medication for a min. of 6 months. They state that he has to be on Lovenox verses Cuadin becasue of his prostrate cancer. I haven't been explained why this is the case and I just don't know what to do at this point. The pharmacist was even shocked with the Co-pay . Does anyone have any understanding as to why Coumadin would not be an option to him. The Doctors of course never told me in the hospital how very expensive this medication was going to be . Any helpful advise would greatly be appreciated

I am about to have a pacemaker inserted and my surgeon is going to put me on Lovenox 4 days prior to the surgery. I have had trouble with warafin, my levels are always jumping up or down. One of the side effects I am having (not many patients know this I researched it and my doctor agrees with the finding) is that my hair is falling out to the point that I may have to buy a wig. I didn't see this listed as a side effect of lovenox. Has anyone experienced severe hair loss? While on Loveox?

GET A GOOD HEMATOLOGIST! jessica n mike wrote: My boyfriend got a MASSIVE blood clot in his leg Feb 4th /08. Was on LOVENOX till Feb 8th /08 then Coumadin everday until around May 5th /08 when a forced (by my boyfriend) chest x-ray was given and they found 1 blood clot in each lung (pulmonary embolism). He was hospitalized for 1 week following the x-ray and was again on Lovenox for the week, along with his coumadin. My boyfriend didn't feel they were monitoring the COUMADIN properly, so he was taken off it and has been on Lovenox injections since around may 13 /08. He has only had 1 Ultra Sound on the massive blood clot in his leg (starts around his knee up to his pelvic) and they said that there has been "no change" but he is noticing as time passes that his leg is getting larger, and the almost like swelling is going below the knee. He doesn't know what to do because no one takes him seriously, he can't walk around because he gets too dizzy and he says that it feels like theres "bad blood" in his body and feels it moving in his veins. If anyone on Lovenox can help us out with any input about any of this. that'd be great. We live in South Western Ontario, and he is only 23 years old. He doesn't have a blood specialist because in May, the doctor said he's done all he can. Any insight would be great. izlemonster@hotmail.com Thanks alot.
