Hi!
I am a physiotherapist and have had 2 episodes of left subclavian venous thrombosis. We have done a number of tests, all my clotting profiles are fine. My gut feeling is that this is related to my work- initially the specialists did not think so and said it was a random event.
I apparently have no bony abnormalities but think I may have fibrous bands due to the amount that I use my arms.
It has caused me to stop working even though I am on warfarin as I do not want a recurrence to occur again.
Is there any type of treatment available, including surgical options NOT involving a 1st rib resection? I know this to be a risky procedure and not effective for only venous thromobis.
Hi Kerry,
I had similar issues and the doctors told me it was a random event as well. I took matters into my own hands and had a venogram done. I am not a doctor but as far as I know, The only other 'treatment' would be to remain on blood thinners. I didn't like that option (I am in my 20's) so I had bilateral 1st rib resection surgery. It has been a little over 6 months and I am 100% better and have had no negative effects. It was the best decision to go through with it. Best of luck, let us know !

Hi Kerry,
The rib resection is about the ONLY thing effective for venous thrombosis. My daughter (also a physio) had a partially occlusive clot that went away until she resumed normal activities. Once she resumed normal activities it came back worse, that time fully occlusive, even though she was on warfarin also. It's a physical problem and as long as the first rib is there you'll continue to clot no matter how well anticoagulated you are.
The surgery is not that risky if you find a good surgeon. If you read back along these posts you'll find many people who had the surgery and have had no complications.

I was diagnosed with a subclavian clot on 1/24/2012 and have been treated with coumdin. however my right arm is still not better. Does anyone have knowledge of a good venous doctor in Missouri? I project that I got the clot from exercise however now I cannot use right arm very well.
