I have been on Warfin since May ’08. I had an abdominal blood clot that is being attributed to Birth Control Pills. It eventually killed off part of my small intestine and I had to have surgery to remove the small intestines. I am a 34 year old non-smoker. The majority of what I am reading are from clots in the legs. Is there anyone reading this that is on the drug due to clots found in the abdomen?

Hi Amey

I had an abdominal clot, that formed after surgery that ended up in my lung, which was pretty scary. I had a previous clot in my leg the year before due to birth control and a long flight. Do they know that it started in the abdomin, or if it just traveled to the intestine?

Sandy,
There were 2 clots - One was in the Mesentari Vein and one in the Portal Vein. So I cannot answer your question. But those were firsts for me. I haven't had any any where else. They are attributing it to birth control pills because nothing came back on my blood work and I didn't have any of the other causes. Luckly for me they did not travel anywhere. And I am so lucky b/c the other possible outcomes are terrifying.

Amey,

clots can form from anywhere, however most of the time they happen in the legs. I have a protein S deficiency which is the cause of mine, and should only have to stay on coumadin for 6 months this time. If I end up with another they say it will most likely be for life. Not fun! Good luck I hope you don't have anymore problems.

I also had a clot in 2005 which caused an ischaemic bowel and I lost most of my small intestine. My consultant tells me that I have the minimum amount of small intestine for survival now. I had cancer before this and they think this may be the reason for the clot. I feel extremely lucky to have come through this.

I just got out of the hospital and I need to know what is going on with my body. After emergency surgury in the ER for blood clots in my lung, spleen (gone), appendix (gone)and small intestine (1/3 taken) I was told that they have no idea what has caused my blood clots. I have been on birth control (desogen mostly) since I was about 14/15 years old and I am mid-20 now. My doctors have put me on lovenox and told me to wait. Wait? Wait for what? Please help..if you have any new information or could recommned a specialist.

A close friend of mine went into the hospital with a staph infection (MRSA) on Saturday. She has been transferred to another hospital because she now has a blood clot in her abdomen. I don't know exactly where in her abdomen, so far that's all I know. She recently had gastric bypass surgery (On Christmas Day). I am wondering if that may be a cause of it? Anybody know anything??

I am 62 and I was recently hospitalized for a blood clot in the intestines. They tell me that it is quite rare to have a blood clot in this area. I have been on hormone replacement therapy for roughly 20 years and they are directly attributing my blood clot to this long-term use of HRT. I was lucky, in that I was diagnosed very quickly and managed to avoid surgery, although I did spend about 11 days in hospital. I am now on Warfarin and get my blood drawn every few days. I had a 3rd CT scan of the abdomen today and I am hoping that the clot has either gone or has severely thinned down. I am anxious to get the results of this scan. I consider myself very lucky to have come through this so well. My symptoms were: off my food for about a month and when I did eat, I couldn't consume very much, maybe just a couple of tablespoons. I then had severe abdominal pain and actually attended the Emerg Dept of our local hospital, was sent home, and then had to go back in again during the night. You should really listen to your body and if things are not right, make sure you get help quickly and don't take no for an answer.

I had and still do have two blood clots in my inferior vena cava. The clots were so large they had blocked my vena cava off 100%. One was the size of a plum and the other the size of a golf ball. I now have collateral veins that have made there way back up to my heart. The doctors said it was very uncommon. I am 25 now and I've been on coumadin for 3 years now. I function just fine and work my 40 hours a week where I am constantly moving and walking.

I am 60 years old and have been taking hormone replacement pills for, I guess too long.(10 years?) I assumed they were safe since my doctor was keeping me one them. I adore my doctor and don't want to blame him but, being a non smoker, non drinker with good blood pressure and such I never expected to get a blood clot in my intestines. I have to be on coumadin for at least 6 months. I tried not to take BC pills too much in my early day but, they were stronger when I was young. I don't know if that would have any effect on me at this stage in my life.

I am 60 and apparently have had the same thing happen to me. I have been on HRT about 10 years. I will be on coumadin for 6 months then have a CT scan. I also had Colon damage and there is a suspicious area on my pancreas. I don't smoke, drink and have good BP. I am waiting for blood tests to see if I have a predisposition but, I think it is the HRT. When I went to my doctor he admitted me to the hospital and ordered tests right away, glad I didn't go the the emergency room first.

My mother-in-law is currently in ICU for several issues being dealt with at this time.
They have unserted a screen to prevent the blood clots in her leg and lung from reaching her heart.
This morning they discovered that she has yet another clot in her stomach.
She was on a blood thinner which caused much difficulty in the bodily functions, and was taken off.
Her functioning was much better, and things were looking up.
At this time, she cannot have the pain medication needed, and is having tests done for her liver.
What kind of treatment is done to resolve the blood clot issue?
What happens with the clot should it move and reach the screen?
Is there any sort of laser treatment to bust the clot, or is it something that has to do itself, since she cannot have the blood thinners now?
Plese help me to understand...I am in Louisiana, and unable to go to Florida where she is at this time.
Thank you so much for any peace of mind and answers you may have for me.

I have seen a hematologist since my last comment and he told me that I could go back on HRT, and that if the blood clots were from my HRT usage, then I would have developed blood clots way back at the beginning when I went on it. I also had the blood test and I carry the gene for the predisposition to blood clots. I am European and this is more common in Northern Europeans. I have since came off HRT again, as my GP thinks I should not be on it after 60. I am now having terrible sweats (3 an hour) and this severely impacts my life. I am still on Warfarin and have no idea how long I will be on it. I should say that I have had no problems with the blood clots since my hospital admission last year.

You're feeling restless and need to introduce as much variety into your day as possible. However, you'll want this to be on your own terms, and you certainly won't like it if plans are changed without your consent or you feel you've lost control of the situation.
