I take 5mg of warfarin once a day and have taken 2 tylenol tablets once a day and have done so for the last several years and each time I go in for my INR it always comes out about the same - go in once every four weeks and usually wait for six weeks as I hate going in period but it is a must anyway.

I was diagnosed with a pretty large DVT SEPT 2011, was in the hospital for a week. My Inr wouldn't go up, and when it did, it was almost 4. Was out of work 12 weeks b/c Dr could not get me therapudic. 10 Yeats ago had a bad car accident and now there is a titanium bolt in my back. Now that winter has settled in my back, I can barely move. Tylenol does not work and I'm afraid to take aleve due to unstable inr. Are there other pain pills I could take that wont interfere with my inr? Calling the Dr in a few hours to see what he wants to do. I test weekley on Mondays. Suppose to come off coumadin in March.

hi edie....
wow..10?...that's high....yes, i agree with laurie.. 2-3 is the range you should be in... i've been on coumadin since 2008...i broke my foot, and after the cast was taken off after 6 weeks, i developed a pulmonary embolism, actually a shower of emboli, in my lung...after alot of blood tests, they showed that i have a genetic predisposition to clot, so i have to stay on it forever.... i also have psoriasis and have psoriatic arthritis, and i take 3 codeine and tylenol's each day...however, they hardly work anymore....oh, well, what can you do,.....keep keppin' on...xoxo |

Anyone still reading this?? I havr been on.coumadin for 2 months now and my dr Still cant get me to theraputic level. My inr has dropped and stayed t 1.2 and rightnow im taking 7.5mg tues - thurs & sat & sun, and 10mg mondays and fridays. I an on coumadin because I have a DVT in my leg that I developed when I was pregnant. I feel like this doctor is taking too long to fix my levels & I'm worried I coyote develop more clots, or worse. I have been dealing with this dvt since june 2011 and there has been no change to it in all this time, it still remains at about 13cm long. On to of it, my menstrual cramps are so bad that I cannot take it anymore, and I'm terrified to take medicine, and tylenol DOES NOT help....what can I do/take instead????

I have been on Coumadin/Warfarin for almost 14 years for a mechanical mitral valve. My range is 2.5-3.5, but I prefer to stay at the high end of the range. Bleeding doesn't worry me near as much as a stroke!
I've taken Hydrocodone, Tylenol, Meloxicam, Colchicine, and Aleve for pain and none affected my INR. Generally speaking, Tylenol doesn't work for me because it's not an anti-inflammatory. Aleve works and has never affected my INR. However, I take it as directed on the label and I don't take it for any longer than absolutely necessary. I also take an 81 mg Ecotrin every day to prevent TIAs. The only medicines I've taken that affect my INR are antibiotics. You also need to be very careful with herbals, such as Ginseng and Ginkgo Biloba. For those of you who still think that Coumadin is a blood thinner, you need to do more reading. It slows the clotting time. Likewise, the various pain meds do not thin the blood. Aspirin, Ibuprofen and Aleve prevent platelets from clumping, but Aspirin is more potent on the platelets than the other two. Some newer studies say that Tylenol also affects platelets, but again not as much as aspirin. Heparin prevents thrombin from forming. So, I would recommend Tylenol for headaches and muscle pain, and Aleve for pain caused by swelling, especially menstrual cramps. Just don't take either for extended periods of time. |

I have disc degenerative disesase and have lost core strength. I struggle with severe pain almost 2 yeasrs now. I dont even drink coffee and try using ice packs and heat. Need to get 20 lbs off. Working with PT and doing water therapy. Pain is driving me to an early grave. 7.5 coumadin and then taking tylenol. being told that I can take up to 4000 ui on the Tylenol. I do take muscle relaxers and that works on my brain taking the edge off. I am young and have two young kids. I am crabby and am unable to life a gallon of milk. PT doesn't appear to be working. Getting another CT scan on the back. I have had surgeries and DVTs and PEs and have a genetic mutation. What med can I take to deal with the inflammation ?? Help.

Hi Jeff. Aleve (Naproxen) while on Coumadin is a no-no. Ibuprophen is a similar no-no; it used to work magic on me being a great anti-inflammatory, but now since I'm taking warfarin (Coumadin) for life, I can't use it for pain.
Even though I've read that Tylenol is a minimal blood thinner, it is what the doctors have told me to take for pain. Just limited in dose to 2 500mg pills twice a day for only a few days. Logic would say finding something that helps your pain depends what is causing it -- mine is from an autoimmune blood disorder --APS-- inflammation and joint pain. Same family as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. Plaquenil is often prescribed to help with symptoms. I haven't succumbed to taking it yet. I have been reading this thread from looking for "tart black cherry juice". Check out what is said about tart cherries on the Live Strong website -- http://www.livestrong.com/article/245371-what... I am going to try the fresh pressed Tart Cherry Juice at Trader Joes and maybe the Red Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate sold at Walmart. Everything I've read boils down to it having several health benefits and that it MIGHT help your pain, but at least it won't hurt you. It certainly is known to help gout, which is a major joint pain causer. So far I haven't, FOR ONCE, found it to be a problem for someone on warfarin. So now I'll check with my coumadin clinic people, but the real test is that I'll take it for about 4 days and then go for my INR test and see if it is in range. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we find this natural way helps the pain! It also helps insomnia due to the melantonin in cherries, so my sleep deprived husband who also has bursitis in a shoulder, wants to try it too. How many of us has pain that disrupts sleep? |

Ask his doctor for his individual case. Usually one is taken off the baby aspirin when put on coumadin. You should not take aspirin while on coumadin. That includes naproxen (Aleve) and ibuprophen. Tylenol is usually allowed, in limited amount, when necessary, but again, check the doc. |
|
Well informed advice, Lisa, though my doctor said NO to Aleve and I've read that in the warfarin literature too. But we all are in charge of our individual health -- ibuprophen's anti-inflammatory properties had always worked wonders on my pain, and when the Tylenol just wasn't cutting it and I had had enough, I took a little ibu. Ahhhh, relief. Of course, only in short duration on those rare occasions. Have you tried or research tart cherry juice's anti-inflammatory properties? |

LOL, should have spelled it ibuprofen. I thought "ibuprophen" looked awfully funny! And Lisa, I meant Tylenol as a "minimal blood thinner" as meaning that it minimally affects your blood thinner compared to aspirin or ibuprofen. Without getting technical, people generally use the term "blood thinner" for anticoagulants like warfarin, and those blood thinning foods like raisins and prunes and cauliflower and Vitamin E, and fish oils and garlic and avocadoes. The list is never-ending.
Someone said they were starting Pradaxa... any comments yet? It is so new a drug. I took my father off it (atrial fib); too many side affects, and I worried about so many others reporting dire troubles, particularly aged people with hemmoraging. He's been fine on a full strength aspirin, I'll stick with the tried-and-true rat poison for my blood clotting disorder. |

I have taken two 500mg tylenol every day for a number of years and have been on coumadin for three years now - only 5mg a day and my test never changes - just holds very steady Am supposed to go every four weeks for the test but I usually wait six or seven weeks as nothing changes.

and I woke up with blood spurting from my dialysis port. Daughter had to throw all the bedding out, saying it looked like a murder scene. Emergency room docsw and cardiologist had no idea what was wrong. I Googled the two meds and even when I told them, it said never to take two together, they didn't believe me. I've become a big fan of Googleing every med and of meddoc.
I'm about to settle on Tylonol for pain, no more than 4 a day if in big time pain. |

I callled my blood specialist office on Friday, as I am on warfarin, coumadin , had a minor headache, pressed 3 for a nurse, she told me it was fine to take Advil. I asked my pharmacist he said that was very misleading. If I can't get the right answer from my blood specialist office, who do I turn too,I will be calling them back Monday morning. I am very upset
