Be careful of Tylenol even though they say you can take it.....I quit taking it and just work through whatever pain I have. Warnings about drug interactions are incomplete. For example, there is no mention on acetaminophen labels that people taking the blood thinner Coumadin (warfarin) could be susceptible to an interaction. Taking 4 pills or more daily of acetaminophen for a week or longer could increase the risk of bleeding in someone taking Coumadin. My doctor said no more than 4 extra strength 500mg. Tylenol's a day, so I basically just stopped taking any for fear of bleeding.

my mom just recently starting taking Coumadin. She is taking 2 mg per day but my sister says the doctor said he wants to see her this thursday and she should be taking an additional 2 mg until he sees her. My question, my mom has arthritis pain and asked the nurse practioner if she can take Tylenol and she said yes... How much, how often, and how many milligrams please advise?

Renee, have your mom ask her doctor - be sure though that they check her INR level about 3 days after starting it and also let the doctor know at that time what the total amount of Tylenol she took.

I have taken hydrocodone for the last 2 years, sometimes one or two a day. Sometimes none. Usually at night after being on my feet all day. Hydrocodone has aceteminophen in it. I guess since MD ordered it she would consider the drug interaction with the coumadin. Also, I have asked the Pharmacist about drug interactions since I've dealt with the fluctuating INR levels, trying to determine a cause.

Just now discovered this thread....as for Tylenol, I was told by my doctor that I can have up to 2 extra strength tylenol per day and not more.
As for doctors considering drug interaction, some do and some don't. It's always good to check with your pharmacist, like Lady golfer does, and if another doctor than your "coumadin doctor" prescribes something, always have your "coumadin" doctor check it and make sure it's ok.
I have both a very good doctor, and an excellent pharmacist, and both will raise the red flag immediately if something's not right.
Most of all though, take charge of this and make sure you check with your doctor(s) and pharmacist(s). Hope you are all doing well....

I have been on Coumadin for over 2 years and must take it the rest of my life. All pain medicine except Tylenol interacts with Coumadin.
However too much Tylenol causes irreversible liver damage so I only take it when pain is unbearable.
I am wheelchair bound with arthritis, fibro and myafascial pain syndrone as well as a spinal chord disease and it is very distressing that there are no safe pain medicines.
I took Oxycodone for about 2 years but stopped because I don't like the side effects from it but it was the only drug that helped with the pain. I have been off all pain medicine for the last 2 years since starting Coumadin.
There are food benefits for arthritis from pineapples and sour cherries and these foods don't interact with Coumadin nor do they adversely effect Diabetes if eaten in correct portions.
Wish I could be of more help.

I take coumadin, 6 mg a day except for monday and fridays and I only take 3mg. I get headaches alot but seem to be more often now on this medicine. they told me to only take tylenol but they didnt say how much I could take a day. All this stuff scares me. Does coumadin make anyone dizzy? It does me. I am not dizzy all the time but 24/7 but I get that way alot now.

Colleen, first of all, have you told your doctor about the constant headaches? You should have a ct of your head -- if you didnt have headaches Before the coumadin -- it could be nothing or something serious -- I recommend you talk with your doctor and get them to order a CT of your head. Dont take the tylenol to mask your headaches until you have it checked. Normally you can take 2 tabs every 4-6 hrs -- I always told people if they need to use tylenol or anything to check an INR about 3 days later -- that way if it interferes with the coumadin, your doctor will see it in the INR. Hope this helps - dont forget to ask about the CT.

i don't know if anyone is still reading these threads but i'm almost 20 and i've been taking coumadin for the last 15 years and at a current dose of 12mg everyday. i get my inr checked every week and tylenol has never made it to high or to low but i also have never taken it more than a couple times in one day. tylenol or t3's if you have had a minor surgery are the only pain pills iknow of that coumadin patients can take. however since i'm so young and risky i've taken advil in a last resort. i told my doctor and she said everything was fine it's just not something you should do often because not only will it effect the inr but you can get stomach ulsers along with some other things i can't remember. but unless you have a lot of pain often then suck it up and don't take anything because eventually tylenol won't have much of an effect on you so use it only when you feel like you're in so much pain your gonna die. be tough. goumba8132@aol.com thats my email i got when i was 5 right after my surgery feel free to email me with questions you might have cause in 15 yrs i've learned alot about this drug and i go to an air force base medical center so you know they have good doctors or just email me if you think i'm full of it either way i'd like to talk to anyone with the same condtions. i'm the youngest person i know by far with this so noone i know, knows how bad it sucks. oh incase anyone is wondering i have cadiomyopithy and a mechanical mitral valve. i've had two surgerys already. sorry about the long post i can't sleep.

Hello Josh,
Yes people still read these threads and they have been very helpful to a lot of "us".
Yes you are very young and goodness I am old enough to be your mother lol.
I sent you an e-mail to the e-mail address you posted. But for everyone here that wants to know, I too have been told that the tylenol is ok, and one doctor told me it wouldn't be all too helpful.
I was prescribed Celebrex from my cardiologist, but I stopped taking it after I heard it may do damage to my heart and that it might be taken off the market soon.
Since my problem with pain has been persistent chest pains, a wonderful new doctor prescribed nitroglycerin, and that took care of the chest pains. I am a happy camper now!
I am sorry, Josh, for what you have had to go through in your young life, but am very glad you are doing all right so far.:)
All the best,
Angela

Josh - are you telling me that you have been on coumadin since you were 5 years old? I dont understand...what type of mitral valve do you have, is it a mechanical? I also never heard that anyone could build up a tolerance to taking regular Tylenol occassionally. Why are you having pain, whats it from, if you dont mind me asking?

I have been on coumadin since December 2008 for a-fib. I am also on baby aspirin and Plavix since my stents were put in in August 2008. I do not trust my coumadin person; she is not a nurse, just reads my INR when I take a blood test and call in; my INR levels fluctuate from 1.8 to 3.0. I was recently put in hospital for Vitamin K therapy with an INR level of 10 (in for 3 days). I feel I am being blown off. She says 1.8 is perfect; 2.5 is perfect and 2.9 is not bad; should I be concerned about her commentary about these ranges. She always says my ranges are perfect. I feel foolish asking this but I don't know where else to turn.

Edie, your range should be 2-3. If you are in range most of the time and drop to 1.8 one day -- that isnt a problem but they should check your inr sooner to make sure it isnt staying lower than normal. Any number in between these ranges is good :) For the record, the 2.9 is perfect to :) You dont sound foolish, you sound smart for being concerned about your readings and want to know what they mean -- that is great! Never hesitate to ask any question on here - someone can normally answer you.
