Cephalexin has a broader antimicrobial spectrum than penicillin. However, cephalexin is not a somewhat “improved version of penicillin”. Penicillin belongs to the penicillin grope of antibiotics, cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin.

This drug is not a penicillin antibiotic. It's a cephalosporin anitibiotic. I didn't realize that myself until I read the sheet that came with it.
