"The problem is, marijuana, like alcohol, is a depressant which works against Celexa the anti-depressant."
would just like to clear this up. alcohol is a depressant. marijuana on the other hand is a euphoric. i have smoked it with 2 different kinds of anti depressants now. if anything the combination of the two simply makes the "happy" in your high more hightened. i haven't tried it with citalopram as i was just prescribed it but i wanted to clear up the confusion thinking marijuana is a depressant because thats simply not true

First of all some of you obviously have no idea what your talking about. You say "I smoke 20 ounces" or "ounce a day". 20 ounces would cost you ballpark 3400 dollars. It lends no credibility to your post. I'm kinda a pot head, I've been smoking pretty consistently since I was 15 years old. I'm now 21 and have currently gone through a bad break up. I was depressed and it was the reason she left me. My doctor prescribed me 20mg of celexa a day. I smoke round 2g of pot a day. I start them tomorrow. There seems to be alot of confusion and stupidity floating around. So ill let you guys know how it goes. Check back in 2 weeks.

I'm a 34 year old female that has suffered from anxiety, deppression and low mood for as long as I can remember. I self-medicated with wine and weed to get temporary relief, but was on an emotional roller coaster. I have been taking 20mg of celexa for just over a month and feel like a different person. At first the side effects sucked, but they subsided and now I haven't touched any alcohol, I still smoke a little weed at night, but now it's just for enjoyment! I used to smoke weed throughout the day and was always on edge to smoke. I couldn't go anywhere without drinking first now I have no desire to drink. I am exercising everyday and not overeating like I used to, lost 8 pounds! My family and friends have all noticed the change in me, I feel so much happier and I think this has made me a better mom and my husband and I no longer fight either. It has saved my marriage. Other than a decreased sex drive, overall I'm much better.
My point to make is that we are all different and alcohol and weed may affect you differently than someone else. Listen to your body and you will know what's right for you.

MJ is NOT a depressant. It blocks dopamine reuptake, so it's the opposite. Bangalee wrote: <quoted text> I believe as long as you're doing marijuana and Celexa at the same time, this might continue to happen, but your tolerance might increase over time. The problem is, marijuana, like alcohol, is a depressant which works against Celexa the anti-depressant. I know what I'm talking about because I am drinking alcohol at the same time as I am taking 40 mg/day of Celexa and 300 mg/day of Wellbutrin (another anti-depressant). What has happened is that over the past 2 years of drinking while on anti-depressants is that my tolerance for alcohol has grown to the point where I can put away 20 ounces of rum 6-7 days per week and wake up the next morning like nothing happened. Sounds good doesn't it? But forking out $100+ per week for your booze just to get a slight buzz is NOT a good thing, because those 20 ounces a day only give me the same buzz that 3-4 ounces used to give me a couple of years ago. Take it from me, doing marijuana or alcohol while on an anti-depressant will only dig you a deeper hole to crawl out of because while my mood and emotions are stable, I need a LOT of alcohol to keep me going.

The reason Celexa and marijuana react that way together, is because both effect the Cannabinoid receptor.

here is the logic and truth about this answer most of my friends are in medical school and we discussed this subject due to the fact that most of us took ssris while in medical school or before due to the stress and anxeity. SRRIs is a extreamly safe drug, infact many doctors recomend taking it because of its benifit. SRRIs work the best for anxiety symptoms that sometimes seem like depression. 90% of the time people think they are depressed but its usually anxiety, i garuntee everybody commenting on this subject are not depressed just have General anxiety that every human being goes through. to make things short somking weed with ssris will not creat any bad side effects to be worse than usual. so what ever side effects u got from weed before u were on ssris will not be worse usually be better. When I was smoking weed while i was on ssris i felt that the ssri was casuing me to use weed more often and my tolerence was much higher. Reason why was celexa was basically making me not give a fuck about the side effects of long term use of MJ,and to me this was the only thing worring my doctor and me. He really didnt want me to get addicted to weed becuase any abuse of a drug wether its alchol or marjuana may lead to anxiety or depression like sypmtoms. I would personally would not take ssris while smoking simply becuase ssri tend to increase the benifits of any medication that makes u happy. which will lead to u having to smoke more. if u are going to smoke then stop the srris first mixing the too is really just cancling each other out. weed is a depressent and ssris is a anti-depressent. so really u are not benifing from them both. honestly if u are smoking weed and takeing ssris then u are most likely cured and u need to talk to your doctor about weaning u off the medication. if u truly have anxiety or depression than im pretty sure smoking weed is usually going to scare the shit out of u or u will not be in the mood to deal with the headache of getting marijuana.

Ive been on celexa 20s for about 8 years (im 25) and i go through phases of smoking pot never to sometimes to daily depending on if im in a work term, a school tetm, holiday etc. I find it makes me more euphoric than it ever did and i love the high but usually i come down hard within the next day or so. I was wondering if anyone else has ever experienced this sensation. Thanks!

stan wrote: but i still get REALLY high (i have a low tolerance to marijuana) i am just dizzy for awhile after, but the dizziness seems to be getting shorter and shorter so thats good. But your comment was very helpful because i too drink alcohol but have yet to get drunk while on celexa so i will keep that in mind. But i am still a bit curious about the marijuana. i do other drugs too such as cocaine exctasy (i do not do them frequently at all but i have used them on celexa) and have no problem doing them on celexa, it actually decreases the after effects. (sorry for my English, I'm french!:o) Hi Stan, I know that your post was written in 2007 but I hope that someone can read my post. I'm new here, and I'm writting a post for the first time! Since a year, after a lot of changes in my medication, I began to take celexa and wellbutrin together. I use to take 40mg celexa, 300mg wellbutrin sr. I smoke too... Even if I knew that it was not really great for me!:o) like an ounce a week ( In quebec we say a 14, I don't know what it means in English...) and I used to do other drugs like cocaine, fingerhash. I was pretty worry about the effects on my mood... Unfortunatly, cocaine gives me a lot of energy (lost cause a major depression) I'm kind of a normal person who can speaks to everybody without stress or anything... when I get high. I'm not proud about it, and I'm already doing this... I keep doing this, every week, marijuana-cocaine-cigarettes.. . And I'm tired! Tired to not be free, to not be able to talk by myself, to only be careful with me. So... I can tell you that drugs are not gonna shake you a lot, you know, but we are sick, and we need to bring answers to our questions dude! Is this can be done all my life? I don't think so, but I had good times!! Have a nice day everyone!! The only thing you'll have to ask yourself is: Is this really helpful to me to not do drugs with medications? You can answer no, but you can also say yes for only a good life that YOU like :o) Peace & Love!

Okay, first off marijuana is NOT a depressive drug nor does it have a depressive effect on your body.. marijuana is a stimulate.. Second, marijuana is NOT a hard drug.. A hard drug would be something such as heroin, cocaine, LSD, masculine etc.. Marijuana IS a pyschoactive drug meaning that it does have psychological effects.. You may experience intense moments of joy and happiness with long bouts of laughter, you may also experience a slight delusion that you're suffering from mal nutrition and eat everything in the kitchen.. In fact, marijuana has proven to have positive effects in the medicible world of psychology.. marijuana has been proven to reduce agitation, anxiety do to suppressing stress inhibitors, depression, nervousness and paranoia ( hmm gee, wonder why marijuana plus another drug designed to reduce paranoia may make you less paranoid... this can't be!) Using marijuana in direct correlation with celexa will have no negative side effects.. however when you are first starting to take celexa there are some possible side effects that include everything listed above from the reaction of your body to celexa its self.. Yes, it is very true that you may tend to be more relaxed and less nervous and paranoid while smoking weed when on celexa merely because as stated before both celexa and marijuana have anti anxiety and anti depressive qualities.. so the marijuana is simply supplementing the celexa in this effort.. I hope this helps and I apologize for the amount of ill informed, un read, false information out there.. I've used marijuana for the past 12 years and have been on celexa for the last two years.. I'm a daily smoker.

Jason wrote: I have been on Celexa 20mg for a couple months now. I had never tried marijuana before and decided to try it last night. What a mistake. I felt a surge of anxiety, of panic, i got really hot, i felt completely out of it, my heart was racing, and breathing was quick and shallow. I told my wife she should probably call an ambulance. She didn't but i felt so bad and f'ed up i felt i like i might literally die. I will never do it again and please don't try it. - I would just like to say that all of those effects you felt were caused by you.. Those are common effects that someone can experience when using marijuana after not having used it for a while or especially if its your very first time smoking.. and just because it doesn't happen the first time you smoke doesn't mean that it won't happen after a long break.. for example the very first time I smoked I felt really freaked out, my heart felt like it was going to explode, I felt like my breathing had been restricted, I was on fire and then of course I puked on the other hand my buddy just got really high his first time and had no negative effects but after we joined the army together and came back from a year in Afghanistan and smoked again I just got really blazed and he had a lot of the effects mentioned above.. but each of those effects are do to paranoia, nervousness and anxiety, ever heard of worrying your self sick? It's actually just you working yourself up and freakin yourself out that's causing those problems.. I've been on 60mg of celexa for over two years and I have been a daily smoker for over 12 years..
