Hi. I suffer from insomnia and mild depression. I have therefore been prescribed trazodone at night (75mg) to sleep and celexa 10mg in the morning to treat the depression.
I've never taken anti depressants ever, and to start taking two types at once, terrifies me!
Anyone taking two types at once before? Is it safe?
Any advise appreciated, I am very nervous about starting to take these pills.

Have a look at the following website that talks about Trazodone:

http://www.mentalhealth.com/drug/p30-d03.html

It says the usual dose for Trazodone is 150-200 mg/day. Some patients even take 600 mg/day! I'm taking only Celexa, but I know the usual starting dose is 20 mg/day with 40 mg/day being not uncommon.

So it looks like your doctor has given you half the usual daily dose of Trazodone and half a dose of Celexa which both together make up a full dose of anti-depressant.

If these two meds had negative interactions I don't think your doctor would have you on both, but what he might do is see if the Trazodone works better for you, and then give you the full 150 mg and tell you to stop the Celexa? Just a thought.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I have decided to just take the trazodone for now as I think my depression is mainly caused by the insomnia. The 75mg pill already made me feel majorly drowsy this morning. Couldn't imagine the full 150mg. I am really quite scared to take all these chemicals with all their side effects.
We'll see how things go.
Thanks again.

I took trazedone with celexa when I very first started celexa and was working a night shift. I didn't experience any negative effects - ofcourse it took a few days to get used to it. I quit the trazedone after three months - because my work went back to days. I had no problem stopping it (I was concerned about addiction at the time). I believed that the trazedone and celexa "taught" my brain how to behave and "taught" me how to sleep. Before then, I rarely slept well.

Hi Chaos,

My husband has been taking 25mg/day of trazodone for insomnia for a year or so. A few weeks ago, his doc presribed celexa (20mg/day) to treat moderate add and ocd. He hasn't had any issues so far, or at least none related to the combination of the drugs. The celexa made him sick for the first week, but now he's fine. And much calmer!

Good luck to you with your treatment. I hope it works for you!

The Celexa/Wellbutrin combo has done wonders for me. I was put on doses of Celexa ranging from 20mg-60mg but the depression was still there. The right mix for me turns out to be 40 mg Celexa at night, 150 mg Wellbutrin in the morning and 150 mg again at bedtime.

I just started my treatment with celexa and ambien... After hearing about Anna Nicole Smith and her son's death, etc... I'm quite nervous to be taking such a mix now! Her son... As I read was on Zoloft, Lexapro, and Methadone! My doctor gave me 5mg for Ambien and 20 mg for Celexa... Is that safe?

I feel like I have a hang over when I wake up, from taking Ambien. It's made me clumsy all day! Wierd feeling. I guess, make sure you got time to sleep it off!

A friend of mines (in the military) told me that she had a friend who took Ambien and came in to work with Ambien hangovers. They had to let her sleep it off.

i have taken sleep pills from sonata, to ambien, ambien cr, and others. It is my experience that a low dosage of an antianxiety drug such as valium is a better alternative. ambien can have wierd side effects, especially if you do not go to bed soon after you take it.

I have been taking celexa for the last three months and just increased to 20 mg because I have
been having insomnia and doctor said that would help. I also take the trazadone when I really cannot sleep and I have wild vivid dreams. I also
have been having migraines , never had them before
anyone else have them? Oh I take antidepressants
for chronic depression.

Odd, I've had migraines for as long as I can remember, but since I've been on citalopram (also for chronic depression and PTSD) I haven't had any. Maybe it's more so because I'm also on lisinopril/HCN for high blood-pressure. On that thought, Have you had your blood-pressure checked lately? Migraines and high hypertension seem to go hand in hand.

Jumping in here with my experience.

For 7 years I used 10mg of Celexa and 75mg of Trazadone for sleep.(The Celexa made me wide awake). Things went smoothly with little side effects, however my Migraines increased over the 7 years to become daily. Whether a result of either Celexa or Trazadone, I don't know, however I stopped both 2 months ago in an attempt to resolve the headaches. Not luck yet.

I tried one dose of celexa and my trazodone later at night and I couldn't stop feeling like I had to pee for two days. Anyone else have this type of reaction? I looked up side effects of taking both but this didn't seem to show up. Should I continue to mix??

I use both, 20mg Celexa daily and 50mg Trazodone as needed.... sometimes 2 or three nights a week, sometimes none. At that dose trazodone has very little antidepressant effect, but it can leave you a bit fuzzy in the morning. Is your doc giving you trazodone as an antidepressant or to help you sleep?
Hope this helps.

My doctor has me on 200mg of Seroquel, plus 10 mg of Ambien every night for sleep. I don't think the Seroquel does anything and I am thinking about switching to Trazodone. Does that work better than Seroquel? I have had chronic onset insomnia for 20+ years. The only thing that works consistantly is alcohol.

I have been suffering from insomnia for about 6 months, my GYN recently prescribed 20mg of Celexa daily, but I have I have such trouble sleeping that I have been taking about 2.5mg of Ambien for the past few nights. I'm about to run out and have plenty of Trazodone, ut I recently quit taking it because it stopped working. Do you think it will help if I start again?

I would talk to your doctor and work together to find what works best in your situation. Trazodone helps me at night, but each individual is different.

I've been taking 50mg of Trazodone for insomnia and Citalopram 20mg for depression. It' been about two weeks now, and today I experienced terrible anxiety with panic. I am going to my Drs. tomorrow. I decided I want to end the Citalopram and maybe also the Trazodone. Can anyone tell me if these symptoms has affected anyone else. I thought I was going out of my mind, I couldn't sit still and the panic was horrible. Thanks for listening!!!!!
