I noticed the same thing on Celexa, I went from a 150 pounds to 213 in 6 months. Then I just had something else to feel junkie about. I stopped taking the Celxa and started Wellbutrin, I have lost 35 pounds in the 3 months I have been on it. I am 40 and not menopausal. I would not just keep taking something that does cause weight gain. I don't care what the doctor said, just because it was not a common side effect don't mean it ain't one at all. There are so many meds out there that can do the same things its worth trying something else. Good luck! I know its a hard road!

I started the celexa back in October with 20mg at first then about a month and a half later my doc bumped it up to 40mg per day. Last month in November he put me on 75mg of wellbutrin.Anyway i was wondering if anyone had an odd effect with the celexa and coffee cause it made my heart race along with dizziness and my pupils were dilated. Never had this problem before the meds drank it all the time. Though it could be that my body hasen't adjusted to the meds making me sensitive to it per say. Just wanted to hear some feedback from you guys cause I would like to start drinking my coffee again in the mornings ya know. Also redbull is a big negative to cause it does me the same way i just don't know what it is with these stimulants I've heard of alot of people being just fine when they drink them. Oh yeah one more question sorry for rambling but whats you guys take on alcohol and these meds will it cancel out the med from working any info will help Thanks! ~Aar0n~

I think celexa is one of the safer anti d's to take when you are pregnant. I took celexa during my pregnancy two years ago and everything was fine. I had a healthy baby girl. my docter told me it was one of the safer drugs to take. These SSRI/SNRI drugs are poison and are handed out by doctors just by saying 'i'm feeling a little depressed". Its a shame and they ruined my familys life.

I have been told "weight gain is not a side effect" and "women commonly gain weight after menopause" (I'm 53). It's validating to hear that other people have had the same problem with weight. I feel if I had found this combo of drugs earlier in my life, my life would have been a whole lot different. What I noticed with appetite and weight gain is an initial compulsion to binge followed by an evening out and weight loss. I noticed this more than once, so it may be worth it to stick out the weight gain and see what happens unless you're talking 30+ lbs.

I also immediately after starting it lost all interest in sex, it was more of a chore to get over with instead of always looking forward to it before. Today my dr ordered Wellbutrin 150 and said keep on the Celexa too. I am going to drop the celexa altogether and just go with the Welbutrin. Any suggestions out there I should know about? Tamlandt@aol.com Stay on the Celexa for a week or so, then wean off it as the Wellbutrin begins to work. If you abruptly stop the celexa you will feel horrible.

If you misdx a depressed bipolar pt as just depressed, and put them on a ssri, they flip into manic mode and become hypersexual, flighty, spendy, etc. She should be on Lithium.

Hi! Where to start? Recently my doctor put me on 20 mg Cilatopram for anxiety with minor depression. I am a married 41 yr old woman for nearly 21 years. My sex drive was never the greatest and after I was put on the cilatopram there is nothing! Numbness to be my words. You get aroused and it vanishes into thin air! WTH? So I did a lot of research about the SSRI medications etc. Being in the medical field I know a lot about medicine. So I called my doctor and told him the issue. Being employed without insurance totally sucks. He had said there was nothing else in generic form could he give me. Thank goodness he has a card to get a discount from a pharmacy. So therefore I was put on the Bupropion 150 mg in the morning and another 150 mg at noon and also still taking the cilatopram in the morning as well. I don't think he has any plans on taking me off the cilatopram. Anyway, started just taking the Bupropion this past Saturday. Does anyone know how long it will take to feel the need for sex again? I mean I feel I want to do it, but POOF again into thin air. I want to feel like a woman again :( I dont know if I will find this post again so plz email at chris35ty@gmail.com

Thank you for your response. I don't understand since she was fine prior to taking these meds. However, her actions/behavior do represent a bi polar individual.

I have just read through a number of these comments and I have to say I'm more confused now than I was before I read them.
I have been on Celexa, Wellbutrin, Buspar, Xanax, and now strattera.
I was also diagnosed with thyroid cancer so I've had it removed and now I'm taking lavoxel.
I have severe depression, anxiety, and ADHD. In the last year I have found that I have tremors, my legs shake when I'm walking down stairs, I've gain 50 pounds,(I am a weight watcher lifetime member and maintained my weight up until two years ago when this all stated)
I don't sleep well, I have absolutely no sex drive, I'm under a great deal of stress and I never want to get out of bed or leave the house.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what more I can do without adding the my medical cocktail?

katie wrote: wow, uhm this isnt great to hear, lol. i just got switched from celexa to wellbutrin today. i hope it doesnt make me get worse. well idk if i could get any worse. dang... and i read wellbutrin wont make you gain weight, or change your sexual appetite. i think its the celexa that does that, cause that happened to me. Wellbutrin for me gave me more energy and actually made me lose weight if anything. As for sexual appetite, it did increase quite a bit (one of its off-label uses is for female sexual dysfunction) whereas Celexa made me gain a little weight but now the combination seems to be balancing the weight gain if that helps.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what more I can do without adding the my medical cocktail? I have found that Celexa and Wellbutrin have really helped me with the severe depression I have/had (and we're talking as serious as it gets) as well as my anxiety (I have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder which is essentially a combination of severe depression, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for me). I had to go to therapy to really get rid of my agoraphobia and the meds help me with the rest of my symptoms. I do use a sleep aid sometimes at night but I find that the more active I am the less I need to take it (I know how hard it can be with depression) So I would try to get on a med that really stems the depression and just get out into the world to ease your sleep problems. Wellbutrin is also used off-label to treat adult ADHD, though a study circa 1993 noted that it did have a tendency to exacerbate tics in children so I don't know if that could contribute to your problem. I too have been on the medication roller coaster and man was it a ride, and not a fun-laughing-when-you-get-off- one but a scary-crazy-hopeless one. As for your thyroid cancer diagnosis, I am very sorry to hear about that it must have been/is terrifying. However, I have very little expertise/advice on the thyroid aspect of your issues. Though I know thyroid-secreting hormones (when unbalanced) can cause severe weight gain which might be contributing to your problems. Best of luck, and get better!

My wife had been on zoloft for 5 years, but anxiety never really left and she had a real flat affect about everything (including sex). She started on Celexa, which she said helped her anxiety and moods are more fluid... BUT, she has lost her ability to orgasm and her desire has nearly shut down. She now has a prescription for Wellbutrin XL that she will start this weekend. I would love for emotions and sex drive to come back. I am very hopeful. Celexa gave her sex drive a boost with alcohol, but she still couldn't climax... so it was fun, but overall no happy ending in itself.

Just my two cents...
I've been on generic Wellbutrin XL for about a year now. I was getting scary, dark, invasive images of self-harm and I knew I needed help. For a few weeks after starting it, I was jittery, sleepless and super irritable. I remember standing in the kitchen chopping vegetables and my boyfriend was whining about the bad Internet connection... Again. I snapped. I said (mind you, I'm holding a butcher knife at this moment) with malice, "Then why the ---- don't you take care of it?" He looked at me like I had gone mad. And I had. I realized how over-the-top that reaction was and I apologized immediately.
I went through that again when my dosage was increased to 300mg. But it was only for a couple weeks. I had fought with the jittery, anxiety while trying to increase. I even cut my pills in half. Don't do that, by the way. Take medicine as directed. It just so happens that I greatly increased my risk of seizure by doing so.
Anyway, life was good for a while. I even was able to stop smoking. I didn't gain any weight. But I've always struggled with explosive anger, dangerously low self-esteem and hysterical crying bouts. I sound lovely, don't I? It's a huge blowout fight every two weeks or so.
My new therapist asked me what I like to do. I literally could not come up with one thing. I used to be really awesome, just for the record. I was always up to something. If my life had a flavor, it would be cabbage soup. It really hit me - I'm depressed. Not in a I-can't-get-out-of-bed, I-haven't-bathed-in-a-week way. More like a gentle, insistent pressure wearing me down day by day.
So, I got a prescription for Celexa today. I'll update in a couple weeks.
