I took 20mg citalopram for two days, and decided to not take another one again. I took them on Friday and Saturday.
It is now Wednesday (4 days of not taking any), and I woke up with morning anxiety, depression and severe dizziness.
Has anybody done something similar, and what did you experience and for how long?

Hi, I just started taking citalopram and the pharmicist said that if I stop taking them that it had to be through the doctor because they had to change the dose slowly or it can realy hurt you. If you are still feeling this you may want to talk with the doctor so that you sdont hurt your self or others.

Hi,

I'm now on 5mg having come off 10mg on Sunday and 20mg two weeks before that. The side effects I've been getting this week are exhaustion, headaches, something like sea sickness and really odd food cravings. Are these normal side effects or am I pregnant?????

Initial reaction to 20mg of citalopram was extreme anxiety, sleep disturbance, clenched jaw, yawning, nausea and fatigue. However, after about a week only tiredness and morning nausea remained. Perhaps tiredness is not helped by alcohol - so mea culpa. Overall though this med has been a lifesaver. Got through the side effects because I knew they were likely and temporary

I don't get why doctors are prescribing 20mg+? Most people experience the side effects (which are not easy and the reason most quit taking the AD) and when you come off of the AD, the doctors wean by dose reduction........why not start at 5mg and work your way up? I started at 10mg, two weeks of severe side effects, but feel great now. If I didn't know what to expect with the scary side effects I would have quit taking them. I wonder if you the AD is as effective at the beginning starting at lower doses and working up gradually???

I take 20 mg's for about a month now and still grind my jaws, have headaches and have to take sleeping aid and xanax.. I can't afford to see a psychologist, I feel like I'm dieing and have many issues with being around people. I am very excited one day and the next so depressed I want to give up.. I feel like I'm losing my mind.. when I wake up in the morning I feel ok but twenty minutes after taking the citalopram I feel like I've taken a wieght loss pill. no where to turn without insurance what do I do?

I have been on 20mg of Celexa for 20 days. I felt great for the first 4 or 5 days, bu then the side effects started to kick in. I was prescribed celexa for moderate anxiety. Now after 21 days, the anxiety has subsided, but I am more depressed than I have ever been. I am so low that I have to admit I've had some rather dark thoughts, although I know I'd never act on them. Still, I'm torn if I should come off of the pills or continue and give then a few weeks. Many people say that they really do help. Although, I feel worse now than when I started. Man - this is rough.

I wouldn't get discouraged by what you see on these forums. If your Doc prescribed it for you it may do the trick - It has for many people. In my research, there are many success stories on these and other forums. Its up to you. What you need to keep in mind is that most people who post to these forums are in crisis, not feeling well, and looking for support and answers. There are likely 100X more people out there experiencing success on the medication - they are living their lives, not posting woes to these forums. Just food for thought.

Just an update to my last post.

I have been to see a different doctor and a pharmacist, looks like I may have been experiencing what's called a "paradoxical" effect on whilst on citalopram. I started for moderate to severe anxiety, and minor depression. I felt fine for the first week. Bey the end of the second week after upping my dose to 20mg, I started having these awful "waves" of miserable depression that would last for an hour or so.

They were so awful that I can only hope nobody ever experiences them. I was completely non-functioning and in tears while going through these bouts.

Apparently, its normal for your anxiety to be heightened when first taking Cit, but what I experienced was pure and awful MAJOR depression. So - I'm now off the drug. Tapered down to 10mg and today will be my first day off completely. I'm likely to have a few more of these bouts while coming off, but at least I'm prepared for them.

Apparently this is a rare side-effect, but if any of you do experience this, please speak to a pharmacist or your GP as soon as you can.

Basically, the drug is doing the opposite of what its supposed to.

Best of luck to all - and to all you guys for whom this is working, stick with it.

I was perscribed this medication today by a mental health Doctor today, I have pain and she said it would help, she asked if I was depressed, I said no, she asked if I had anxiety, I said no. it sound like from what I have read the Med is not for pain. she did say people come in all the time depressed & in pain and this med helps,,, feeling lost and like I am not going to start this med @ 20mgs...12/5/08

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Aries

It won't be long before you start to feel bored today, unless you can distract yourself - you're switching from one activity to another. Ideally, you should keep yourself amused by doing something that's unusual or challenging, otherwise you'll be tempted to stir up trouble just to see what happens next! Even though you know that's a bad idea, you won't be able to resist, unless you've got something better to do with your time.
