Don't count on your doctor to warn you about this possible side effect. I started on citalopram on 7/9/07 and took it for 8 weeks. The burning never stopped and got worse. The neuropathy is crippling my legs, my spirit and my bank account. I'll regret to my last day seeking medical help for depression. Beware of SSRI drugs!"
"Can anyone tell me if they have gotten off of the Celexa, has their symptoms lessened? I have neuropathy in my feet severely, the burning and shooting pain is horrible. The Gabapentin and Amitriptyline have ceased helping. Since it is advisable to get off the Celexa, has anyone found an amino acid/herbal combo that helps with the depression?" Because of TOD'S post, I no longer take CELEXA. I suffered with severe neuropathy pain for the last 2.5 years. When I talked to my Doctor about it, he diagnosed it as such, but didn't offer any advice on how to alleviate the symptoms, or the cause. I don't know which is worse, the hot sunburn like heat emanating from my legs...or the pins and needles..especially on the bottoms of my feet. I've used ice bags and taken cold showers thinking it would help. <shrug> Celexa was supposed to help me better handle stress...instead it increased my anxiety...gave me dry eyes, decreased sexual desire, insomia, and a whole gamut of other side effects. Since being off of this POISON, I feel like a whole new person. I've been taking steps to counter those negative thoughts I sometimes get. IOW I am modifying my behaviour and learning how to handle stress the moment something bothers me...and I'm learning others way to relax. I have increased mental clarity and I am sleeping better. Last night was the first time in almost 3 years that I slept with the covers over my legs...I didn't feel any pins and needles or warmth on my legs. Yay me!

I have been on Celexa for alittle over three months, seems to be helping, was feeling very tired and no energy in the beginning, just find the feeling if the tingling weird, in face hands and sometimes feet, I have read other responses and notice they say feet fall asleep very easy, I have noticed my hands too! as well as really bad sweats, but on other medications as well! doctor said the tingling is anxiety, but I think the meds are playing a big part, it doesn't bother me alot, just alittle annoying, feels like iI have rubbed something like goldbond or something with menthol onto my skin! I seem to be improving greatly on this drug, as I see alot of negative comments on it, not really sure what to think, but know it is helping me! I started at 20mg and is up to 30mg, now, I have been off work for the last three months and just started back and it kind of felt pretty good! I hope this will help someone, as I am just confused as the other person being on this drug, but let it be known that it will affect each and every person alittle differently!

I started citalopram 5 mths ago; this past weekend went to beach, started having extreme sensitivity to heat and cold on tops of my feet. Burning, stinging sensation in toes and feet. Went to Dr. gave me Gabapentin and told me to see a neurologist. Researched Celexa (citalopram) and decided to come off of it gradually. Hope I have not done permanent damage. Dr. and pharmacist swear this is not a side effect! Ha.

Some numbness and tingling, but nothing like when I was on the medication. I'm getting better every day. Good luck!

okayny I totally freaked out right now. I started back on celexia 14 days ago and about a eek into it I started having a burning sensation throughout my body . I was told that it was anxiety or panic attacks. I have been to the ER twice now. a friend mentioned research it and neropathy. I am so scared this will never go away. I have a call into my phychiatrist to come off it. going to taper tonight and go off it. If I have only been back on for 14 days will the burning go away????

My husband has been on 40 mg daily of celexa for 6 months now. Nearly to the day from when he started taking it, he complained of "numb feet." He has seen a neurologist, had blood tests, nerve tests, CT scan, MRI... with everything coming up negative. His neurologist is now talking of doing nerve biopsy and/or steroid treatments for his numb feet. Could celexa really be the culprit??! Up until now no one has considered the connection.

This drug is dangerous. Stop taking it and see your MD asap. I room celexa a couple of years ago. It landed me in the emergency room several times before it nearly killed me. The ER docs said I was having hot flashes! I would awaken in middle of night with severe internal burning sensation coursing through my body, a heart rate in the 160 to 180 range, and chest pain. Docs kept telling me it was anxiety! I also had severe akathisia . The docs told me to put my face in ice cold water when I would awaken in Middle of night with these symptoms To return my heart rate to normal. Do yourself a favor And quit taking this. Obviously it is very dangerous for some. I've not had Any of those symptoms again since being off celexa. My EKG is normal now.
