I am very mad over them allowing these type drugs to continue to be on the market. My father was on Avandia and suffered a fatal heart attack. NEVER one warning sign yet had a complete physical 3 weeks prior. The politics involved make me sick and think each and every person should have to serve time for each death that results from these dangerous drugs. Sure the drug companies spokeperson never was used as a test subject in any trials. Maybe thats a option in the future then we would see how long they would assure us of safety.

Sorry to hear about your father and I agree I lost my father too and he also got a clean bill of health 2 days prior to his death! How long was your father taking the drug? My Dad was only 62, How old was your Dad? i agree with you they should take this drug off the market! I guess they just want to see how many more people that they kill!

He was 66 and been on the drug from july 2001-june 2002. Again I think it is in fact all about money. Their thinking we can pay off law suits and still reap profits. That is the drug companies only concern. Otherwise they would have clear studies instead of claiming we don't have clear data. But how many years does it take and at what cost on human life? So sorry about your loss and everyone else who has suffered from the politics of danerous drugs.

I had been on avandia since it first came out I think. I'm not sure about the dates but it was quite a few years. About four years ago I suffered a mild attack which was fixed with another elusive device. Drug eluding stents.
Anyway....I'm not quite clear on what type of heart attack this drug is supposed to cause. I keep hearing about heart failure, but my heart was strong, and I suffered no heart damage. I've had cardiac tests every year since and I guess they've found nothing else wrong. I did stop the avandia however....there is no reason for this drug if there is even the slightest reason to suspect it causes heart damage. Diabetes itself causes enough heart damage without being helped along by some greedy drug company. I'm sorry for the loss of both of your fathers. It's a hard row to hoe sometimes with this disease. And we never really know what it is doing to us on a daily basis. It runs in my family and I've seen a lot of it. PJJP11@aol.com

Diabetes Drugs and Heart Failure

It appears you will starve for chocolates, while having a heart attack while urinating; hope it isn't in the shower!!!

I was realy shoked as i get the news about Avandia is causing fatal heart damage because it actualy is doing a good job on the diabetes.I taking it since 2004 as i was diagnosed with diabetes type 2.But now i need to think about changes in my medication.
Once more we see here that money is the most important factor for the pharma industry. Here in Ireland, health board is paying for the drug. But as i was for six month travelling in Australia i had to pay for the Avandia myself. And it was just a very little bit cheaper than 100 AUS $ for a monthly supply.Thats a high price for a medication which could bring you death closer then to life, i would say.I'm still young with my 30 years of age,so i hope the damage is'nt to big.

If avandia was withdrawn, diabetics would be deprived of a drug which has been demonstrated to be an effective treatment for diabetes based on hundreds of thousands of treatments. The risks to diabetics from withdrawing the drug have to be balanced against the risks of keeping the drug. There are precious few drugs for diabetes and all have side effects. The FDA decided almost unanimously to keep the drug on the market because there is very scant evidence indicating a problem and withdrawal would do more harm than good.

Today another group of researchers from California demonstrated that the paper which kicked this debate off had intentionally excluded 6 studies on the basis that they showed positive cardiovascular outcomes on Avandia. Given this you have to question the motives of the study's author steven Nissen It is interesting to note that Nissens work receives significant funding from the company that makes Avandia's rival (and far less studied drug), Actos.

Tim.You sound like an expert. Are you a doctor?
Anyhow.
After siting down and thinking about all this, i decided to stay calm and not to overeact.I know that withdraw or change medication is sometimes more complicatet then good.So i made an apointment with a G.P. and i will discuss all points with him before starting to panic.
Then i'll decide what to do.

No I'm not a doctor. Just been interested in the whole Avandia issue. Definitely a good idea to speak to your doctor about it. Its a complex issue but the FDA experts should know what they're talking about.

It's too easy to say they are in bed with the industry but the facts don't support this. The FDA withdrew Merck's painkiller Vioxx when presented with compelling evidence against it. They're also asking for firmer and firmer safety evidence on new drugs - Acomplia and Trexima (recent new treatments) were not approved by the FDA recently and the companies were sent away by the FDA to do more (costly) clinical trials. If the FDA felt that the balance of risks on Avandia meant it was too high a risk, they would have withdrawn it.

Good luck with your GP and I hope he / she puts your mind at rest.

I have been given Metformin 5oomg tablets that I am supposed to take three times a day. The side effects are virtigo, vomiting. abdominal pain, flatulence and nausea. added to that it says I should never take any alcohol when I am on this tablet. When I asked the doctor how long I will be on that tablets he said for the rest of my life.

I drive long distances, not just in England but also in Europe, if I hae an accident because of one of these sideaffects I will be guilty of causing the accident.

Ths doctor was not listening to me but barking at me. This is not the right way to talk to anyone and I have not started takig the tablet. Any advice would be welcome I think this tablet is wrong for me..

Marcus I read your post from yesterday and only hope that you might check in again today. I have been married for twelve years. About six months before I married My husband he was diagnosed with type 2 diabeties. Due to the demands of his job he has not able to eat, sleep, and exercise consistantly and so his diabeties is not in a controled state. He is on about every med. that they have including a long acting and a short acting insolin. He was put on Avandia a few years back and imediatly started noticing pain in his chest area. He told his doctor who asured him that everything was ok. I thank God for this study being released as soon as my husband heard this he was at first mad because he had been living with chest pain for years and then he threw all his Avandia away. As soon as the med was out of his system his pain went away. Doctors these days are so quick to perscribe meds these days. Most Doctors will tell you that almost all type two diabeties can be controled by diet, exercise and proper rest. But most people don't want to make the changes needed. When you talk to your Doctor ask to have a conseltation with a nutritionalist and the posibility of controling you illness with more natural means. also check out the book "The sugar salution" Publised By Rodale Books (Rodale.com ) It has alot of information on different things you can do to control you sugar. You may never be able to go off all your meds. but by making changes you may be able to go off some. Good Luck.

I work with a gentlemen who struggles with diabetes and was concerned about the toxic medications needed to control it. Two months ago, he started taking a natural product known as XanGo. He no longer needs the dangerous prescriptions and takes only this natural botanical and his insulin. He referred me to it and I find it is helping me too. I differ in thinking with Tim on the safety issues. If there is not a increased risk there would not be a Black Box Warning. Lets say the risk is not 1 in 50 reduce it to 1 in 25. If a car marketed today had the same record of exploding or complete brake failure would it be on the market today? And I bet it would not take 5-7 yrs to wake up and realize something was wrong. I feel the FDA itself knew of the risks and hid them from the public. We all know the drug companies make Billions and can afford what they seem to view as a bump in the road. To them whats a few thousands deaths? They are making plenty of money and have 100's of attorneys to help reduce their settlements. So to them the risk outweighs the benefits. They make billions off one drug so they can afford to ignore the hazzards. They can't face criminal charges otherwise they would put people before profits. As with everything the costs rise and the quality goes down and there is no sign of a change with the current guidelines in place to prevent this downward spiral.

I can recommend a reputable online pharmacy http://allbestpills.info
I figured it would be enough to give the pills a try and I was quite satisfied with the result. I hope this info will be of any help to the community.
I have been taking 4mg Avandia from this site once in morning for last 8 or 9 years without any problems. Weight is staying stable within 5 lbs /- for the last 8 or 9 years.
