"The pooled analysis of 42 studies revealed a 43 percent higher risk of heart attack for those taking Avandia compared with people taking other diabetes drugs or no diabetes medication."

"Glaxo, meanwhile, says its own data show no increase in heart risks with Avandia compared with other diabetes drugs, including Actos."

Let me guess, 42 studies say one thing and the manufacturer says another. I wonder if the Glaxo study might be a little slanted?

Well, mark up another one for the lobbyists in Washington, and the congressmen and the senators who are only interested in THEIR pocket books instead of caring for the American public!
I have a sister who is a diabetic and is taking this drug! I am printing out a copy of this, and I hope it will somehow be pulled from the market.
The only way this could be achieved is to write to the congressmen in Washington and let them know if they don't do something about it....you will hit them where it hurts come election day!

I have been taking Avandia now for years with absolutely no bad side affects. The drug has been wonderful in controlling my blood sugar. I would like to see more studies done before this drug is rasly removed from the market

Of course GlaxoSmithKline's report says it does not increase the risk of a heart attack. who ever pays fo a study will have end results in their favor, regardless. I would be more inclined to believe the results of POOLED analysis of 42 studies. What I DON'T understand is, why was this not discovered during the trial phase of this drug. Isn't that what all the drug companies complain about, the high cost of development and trial? Could it be the FDA is not doing THEIR job properly? the latter is likely in any event. It seems more and more drugs are entering the market that pose SERIOUS health risks to the consumer. And the FDA claims that obtaining drugs from sources OUTSIDE the U.S. is dangerous? Not any more so than domestic, it appears.

Let it on the market, that way after someone dies the company can be sued, then they will realize it is time to pull it. I bet their family members are not on this medication.

i'm a primary care provider and would like to see Avandia put on a black box warning instead of being taken off the market. I need more choices to treat diabetics.

The FDA should be disbanded! They are paid by both sides the Government and the Drug companies! They are suppose to be for the protection of the people but anymore you have to wonder is this just legal murder by both Government Agencies and the Drug Companies! The Government should get out of Medicine and regulation they give the people a false sence of wellness and legaliness to Drug use that kill people for money! There is a big lobying and money by the Drug Companies in Washington to Senators and congress people! There is a lot of money in legal drugs and medicine! I thought this country was fighting for a drug free society? I think it would be safer just to buy street drugs after all most are now pharmicutical now! The Doctors and the scienctists and independant studies are doing more to regulate themselves than the FDA is!

Folks, almost anything can cause a problem. Our bodies are chemical factories and each reacts differently. Drug companies have to play the benefit odds against the risk odds. That's just the way it is. Does that mean that I think the drug companies don't hurt us sometimes? No. Drug companies are in the business of making money and doing so with the least amount of risk and the most amount of health benefit. That may sound naive, but that's what I choose to believe. I always like to hedge my bet and use the natural approach with vitamins and minerals as much as possible. I can hardly imagine the problems this causes for people who have to take these drugs, understanding the risks involved and hoping that they are not in that category, and receive maximum benefits. My prayers are for all of you.

As Americans, we swallow far too much medication, and then wonder why our youth are addicts. Many patients are not happy unless they leave doctor's office with a prescription and too many physicians are too happy to do so when a lifestyle change is mandatory.
Steering totally clear of all processed foods and those with additives, taking supplements, eating foods as nature provides them and moving our bodies instead of being couch potatoes would help tremendously with all health issues. We are what we absorb. ALL medications are powerful chemicals and all have some side effects.
There are times that taking meds is necessary, but I believe we are responsible for our bodies and medication should be the last resort, not the first.

anonymous,
ACTOS is just as bad. The media did not pick up on it. ACTOS was also mentioned to the feds at the same time, that it had the same danger of causing a heart attack. I've had 2 they were enough, thank you.

While I, too, basically agree with all those who believe the best thing we can do is eat really good, healthy food, and take supplements, which I do, no one has mentioned the problem of people eating too many sweets. Most people's bodies simply cannot process large quantities of sugar, and yet so many people who are basically healthy still eat way too many sweets. Even if they do cut out sweets, they tend to ignore the quantity of alcohol they ingest, which simply converts to sugar in the body. All of us "pre-diabetics" (which most of us are) simply cannot go on this way without expecting to become fully diabetic later on. We should also never advise a diabetic to not take their medication; only a medical dr. can do that, knowing the individual's particular situation. Questions and suggestions for that should be given to doctors only. If I were diabetic, I would certainly ask my doctor immediately about Avantia, and definitely get a second opinion, if he or she advises me to stay on it. Sometimes doctors don't seem to get this kind of info as soon as the rest of us.

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Aquarius

You won't like it if you feel your wings are being clipped today. You want to do something in particular, only to discover that someone is objecting to your plans or that circumstances beyond your control are standing in your way. Although your instincts tell you to throw a tantrum to get your point across, you must ask yourself what this will achieve, and whether it will actually be self-defeating.
