COncerned: I've been drinking for decades. Whenever I sober up long enough to think I can change my habits, I gradually sink back to my old routine. Unless one is getting into trouble (DUI, abusive, missing work), why not experiment? But if you have any reason to believe that drinking will get you arrested (fired, divorced, etc), just give it up. As I've told close friends and relatives, there is nothing easier than picking up the habit again. If you decide to drink again, build yourself a trap before you start.(Get someone close to promise to lace your OJ with antabuse on a specific date.)

I'm excited and relieved at the same time. I have tried EVERYTHING to stop drinking. Went to AA meetings and came home and got trashed because it was so depressing! Hi everyone. Single, divorced mom here (47) with three wonderful teenaged sons. Not a professional, but good job. In the past it was always fun to come home from work and start up with the martinis while cooking a nice dinner for the boys. It was never a problem until the last year and a half or so, having to drink more and more. It is incredible how much I've been consuming lately, like 11 or 12 shots a night (with olives!). I can't believe it. BUT! I have an Rx now for Antabuse and I pray to dear God that it will work. I'm not even going to think about a sip of booze while on it, and you better believe I'm gonna pop the pill first thing in the a.m.(after the holidays).Psychological or not, this will truly deter me from that damn vodka. I'll let you all know. But I am gonna wait until after the holidays...if that makes sense. LOL Merry Christmas to all!

Denise - Nothing psychological about it. Take the full dose. When you're tempted to "test it", don't do it with shots or martinis. It works really well. If you wait til after Christmas, set yourself a deadline. Then keep them next to your bed with a glass of water. It only takes 2 minutes of sanity a day to throw back the meds before the "demon" talks you out of it. (Allow at least 12 hours since your last drink.)

They say to give it up to 2 weeks to get it out of your system. If you do decide to drink (bad idea), start VERY slowly. This medicine can kill you or make you wish that it had.

Antabuse should NEVER be given to someone without their approval/consent.

Holy crap! Sly could wind up being a murderer. How much are you sneaking on your hubby? If he doesn't know what's hitting him after he (possibly) drinks, the people at his end won't know how to treat him. BAD IDEA!!!

I have been on Antabuse for 1 month. Simultaneously I am taking Campral which deals with the "urge". I also have attended AA and worked the program as well. But I kept relapsing. I'm not drinking, but my alcoholic thinking is starting to sneak back in. I came onto these "forum" sites to read if people were able to drink while on the Antabuse. Based on what I have read, it is definitely not a good idea.

Jim --
Does the Campral work at all? My dr gave it to me along with Antabuse. I've not taken it yet, however if it helped with some of my cravings, I'd like to add it to my "pill popping regimen".
thanks.

Erin wrote: I started taking antabuse19 days ago after trying all sorts of things like AA. I went away on a business trip and "tested" it a few times-- got a really red face and heart pounding. Once I felt completely dizzy and had to sit down. the most alcohol I had at one time was probably not even a half a glass of beer. 2 nights ago back in nyc, i thought i could do this again. i had a half of glass of wine. my face started to feel red, and my heart was beating so hard i thought it might break. i had to lie down and then was very aware that i was probably going to pass out. i whispered to a friend what i was on in case i fainted or went unconscious. slowly, i started to feel a huge ache in my back and couldn't take the pain. during this, my vision was started to fail me and everything got more and more cloudy. my friends carried me to the bathroom in which i had the thought "i can't go on like this". after a few attempts, i as able to throw up. it was hot, hard and unstoppable. i had no control over my bottom and thought acid was spewing through my throat and mouth. after 10 minutes of this it slowed down. that is my lovely "test" of antabuse. no way it's happening again. i need to find out how to life like sober. if i can't do that, what really is life? Hey Erin~ Just read your post from last May. How are you today, now? Did the antabuse work? Did you stop drinking? I hope the best for you.

Sybill wrote: My dr prescribed Antabuse at my request as well as Naltraxone this morning. I am scared to take both of them but I do not know what else to do. Tried AA a few times but it did not really help and not believing in a "higher power' was a real issue; as soon as people would mention "God" I would immediately tune out and get annoyed as I have very strong opinions about this topic. I am concerned because my dr just wrote me the scripts and did not order any blood tests or anything and I just read on the internet that you should get them to test your liver- and I am pretty sure my liver is damaged because of how much I drink and for how long I've been doing it. If anyone is taking either of these I would greatly appreciate reading about their experiences and side effects. Sybill JILL HERE, PLEASE ET ME KNOW IF YOU DID BOTH I JUST STARTED.... I started taking antibuse over 7 months ago and at first i lasted a few weeks before trying a drink. The symtoms of this were terrible shortness of breath red face sickness and headaches but it did not stop me drinking and i finally came off the tablets and decided that i could stop drinking by myself. This did not last long and i was soon back to my old ways of drinking till i blacked out. I was admitted to an alchol promblem clinc and it was the kick up the backside that i needed to stop drinking and go back on the tablets. I started taking the antibuse again under supervision and i have been drink free for over 5 months. I have lost weight i no longer have a bloated face. I a have more energy than i ever had and i no longer have the terrible hangovers in the mornings. I don't no how long i will stay on the tablets but for now they are certainly working for me and i would urge anyone out there with a serious drink problem to give them a go.

Your doc should never have given you the prescription for this these tablets should be taken undersupervion not handed out like sweeties. If anything happens to your poor chap on your head be it you should be ashamed of yourself.

I've only taken Antabuse for two days but honestly I already feel so much better. I had my last drinks on Friday night and I bought heaps and heaps of beer but only ended up forcing down about 8 (which is a pathetic effort for me)! I gave all the other booze in the house away and took the pills at lunchtime on Saturday. I waited to throw up as my mate said he was really sick but I was fine. The last two days have been my first sober days in three years. I know it's early days but I don't ever want to go back. I took a video of myself when I was drunk. It's disgusting and I wondered why I was single for all that time. Today I'm at work for the first time thinking clearly. If I can take the step I believe anyone can who truly is sick of living life through a blur of hangovers and bed wetting.

Antabuse not working well enough? Increase the dosage. Really. It will start working, and you cannot get past it. You might kill yourself trying, but the antabuse at the right dosage will create a wall you can't go past. After that if you drink enough, it will kill you. Through heart failure or asthma.
