I was wondering if anyone has ever had a side effect of confusion. I started amoxicillin two weeks ago and ever since I have had an insane sense of confusion, insomnia and a few instances of hyper tension.
My heart rate goes up, I wake up in the middle of the night not able to sleep and I have intense stomach pains. I'm having a hard time concentrating at work and I really feel like it is affecting me mentally. I did some research on wikipedia and it says the first alergic reaction to amoxicillin "starts with a change in mental state". I think I am feeling this big time.
When I was younger as well, I used to have night terrors and now I am beginning to think that my ear infections and being on amoxicillin all the time had something to do with it (after talking with my mother).
I have an email into my doc about all this, I just wanted to see if anyone out there had any major side effects like I did.
Thanks,
Ev3

I took amoxicillin after having dental work,It caused similar effects with me.I was told that the anxiety would go away after stopping the drug. It didnt, it has been two years now and I still dont feel normal, difficult to concentrate, anxiety. I can feel the change it has made to my brain...I just feel different. I wish I had never taken it.

I have been taking amoxicillim, biaxin and pantoprazole for 2 days for a treatment of h. pylori bacteria causing gastritis and eventually ulcers.
I also experience weird side effects, like insomnia, mental confusion, feeling I am not myself, wanting to suicide without any reason, hearing a buzz in my head, funny feeling in my stomach, bad taste in mouth, headaches... I told my spouse that I was really feeling bad and that I had the feeling something was wrong. I even thought that the pharmacist gave me the wrong medication, since it affects me mentally so much...
Then I woke up at 2am, couldn't go to sleep and started researching on the web and found your post. I found a couple of articles on amoxicillin and the side effects.
SIDE EFFECTS: Side effects due to amoxicillin include diarrhea, dizziness, heartburn, insomnia, nausea, itching, vomiting, confusion, abdominal pain, easy bruising, bleeding, rash, and allergic reactions. Individuals who are allergic to antibiotics in the class of cephalosporins may also be sensitive to amoxicillin.
source: http://www.medicinenet.com/amoxicillin/articl...
I also researched for the other medication I am taking and found that BIAXIN has a side effect of confusion and psychotic experience.
A couple of Québec, Canada is suing the the makers of this medication after the wife tempted to commit suicide for no reason. See link in French
http://www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20080813/CP...
I will call my doctor tomorrow to interrupt the treatment.
Is there someone like me who is treated for h. pylori and that is experiencing such side effects ?
thank you

I just recently started taking amoxicillin, and currently I am experiencing insomnia. It's 4 o'clock in the morning, I haven't slept yet and I'm wide awake. I had a bit of dizzyness earlier today, and I've been unsure about a lot of things lately. I guess that would be confusion. So I think it's safe to say that it's common to experience side effects. Unless we're just getting feedback from people who do. But it really is an uncomfortable feeling to feel different than usual. I definitely don't want to be on this drug. I feel not like myself all the time. And I'm only being treated for strep throat... but I'm taking 2,000 mg a day. That's a lot considering the most common prescribed dosage is 250mg every 8 hours. That's only 750mg a day.

I've been on amoxicillin for a week now. I'm supposed to be on it for another three days, but I'm stopping taking it. I was purscribed it for a sinus infection and have also had extreme insomnia. I have not slept 5 minutes in the last week. I stopped taking it yesterday because I just couldn't stand it anymore, and already this afternoon I am feeling back to normal. I also had dizziness and lightheadedness, but the biggest problem for me was definitely the insomnia. I have never in my life had a problem with it before.

I just started taking amoxicillin yesterday for tonsillitis. I maybe slept a total of 2hours all night long. The doctor said I should be sleeping a total of 12 to 14 hours a day so my body can fight the infection. I've been experiencing dizziness, lightheadedness, having a hard time focusing, and most annoyingly I can't sleep at all... not even for a little nap. I feel so tired but can't seem to fall asleep. I thought it was just something extremely wrong with me b/c I'm not feeling like myself. The bad part about it is that I still have 8 more days of this. I need another solution.

After taking this drug for 2 days 500mg/6hrs, I started getting wierd mental images of things that just didnt make any sense. ex.(a dog with its front legs crossed) This happened while trying to sleep. This scared the f outta me and I immediately stopped taking any more of it. Probably the dosage was too high. A previous dentist has prescribed 250 mg and i never had any trouble with that dosage. I did not have any problems after stopping. I would be very careful giving this drugs to kids, since they cant really know what normal/abnormal mental state is, and it may have greater impact on them. I also happened to discover that I was a "rapid metabolizer of codeine" at this same time(that is another story). We are all different, and drugs can have different reactions for different people. Dont let the Dr tell you that "ah dont worry about it.. it is safe.." Only YOU can know for sure if something is good for you or not.

I am 51 and over the years have taken Amoxicillin or similar for sinus/bronchitis infections without any problem, however this time round has been VERY different.

I had a sinus infection and naturally felt crap, went to doc and was given a 5 day course of Amoxicillin and it has been a bumpy ride all week with:
- constant low grade nausea and tummy pains
- mild confusion/feeling just not quite right
- fatigue
- low mood / irratability
- inability to concentrate
- low grade diarrhea
I have stayed the distance and completed the course prescribed, but dogs, it has been rough.

After researching on the web, it at least helped to understand why I was feeling so crummy.
Strangely, I do not expereience the insomnia everyone speaks of.
All the best.

Was prescribed two 500mg tablets twice a day (2000mg) for a sinus infection. I am definitely wide awake--hard core insomnia. confusion as well.
I was wondering if anyone knows how amoxicillin interacts with anti-depressants?

Hey, I was wondering how long after stopping the amoxicillin it took for your insomnia to go away ? I've been off it for 2 days now and still am getting no sleep.

How long did it take for the dizziness to stop?

I've been taking amoxicillin for over a week for a strep throat infection and was OK at first but toward the end of the week began to feel extreme dizziness and nausea ....which led to vomiting. I stopped taking the med as it was 8 days...and I still had the same symptoms today..one day later.
It helped the infection...but the dizziness has been severe.

Thanks to all the posters on this site, I now know that I am not alone in my side effects.

Major stomach problems, diarrhea, insomnia, and irratability.

I was prescribed 500mg 3x daily for a sore throat--not strep. I took 6 pills. After reading this site, I am going to stop the meds's----the med is working as my throat feels better.

What should I expect to happen next?

I am having a different experience. I am taking 2000mg/day (4x500mg), and today I woke up, took my pill, stepped outside to smoke and do not recall really coming back in, barely recall going back to sleep. I am sleeping much more deeply, dreaming (something I normally dont do due to other sleeping issues I have), and all that. This is day 3 for me.
As for the other side effects that are on the official list, I have none of them. It seems others have bouts of drowsiness as well.

It is dangerous to just stop taking antibiotics, that is a great fear of many in the medical community. Basically, there are 4 levels of antibiotics, if stuff gets immune to all 4 levels then a pandemic can happen which can kill off most of the human population. Infections can become immune because a course was started but not finished, usually because people feel better. If that newly immune strain passes on to other people, its bad mojo.

My suggestion is to talk to your doctor instead of just stopping it, and if you are not having side effects there is little reason to stop it before the course is done. Your post did not indicate that you were having side effects, only that you read that some others who posted here were. If people are having side effects, they should talk to their doctor anyway.

Liz I took Amoxicillin 2 years ago and ended up in the hospital with a seizure. I didn't know this medication was the problem. This past December I was given Amoxicillin again for an infection and ended up with a Gran Mal Seizure and back into the hospital with swelling of the body and brain. Please don't take it. My doctor told me I had an allergic reaction to it.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Leo

It's hard to pin down a certain person today because they're being so vague and dithery. Ask them a question and they'll vacillate or be unable to give you a straight answer. You might suspect them of deceitful goings on but it's far more likely that they're simply in a world of their own and can't keep their mind on anything for long. Don't worry, they'll soon be back on planet earth.
