In April, 2008. My husband was prescribed Amoxicillin 500 mg capsules as a preventive messure prior to a dental implant. He took 4 capsules prior to oral surgery and was to take one capsule every eight hours until gone. He began to feel weak and achy within a day. By the time he had taken the capsules for five days he was so weak and in so much pain that he couldn't get our of a chair without help, couldn't dress himself, couldn't sleep because of pain. He was somewhat confused. I called our Dr. at 3 A.M. Another Dr. was covering for him and said to take him to the ER in case his muscles were breaking down. The ER was a waste of time. We saw our internist later that day. He diagnosed Serum Sickness which can be caused by a reaction to a Penicillin type drug. However,Serum Sickness goes away when you stop taking the drug. This did not go away. His hands and joints swelled and the weakness and pain persisted. Dr. gave him Prednisone which helped. As soon as he was taken off the Prednisone the swelling, aches and weakness came back. He was sent to a Rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic. Blood work there showed inflammation and anemia. Dr. was unsure of diagnosis. He suggested Serum Sickness, Rheumatoid Arthritis or Polymyalgia Rheumatica and continued Prednisone. To shorten the story,14 months later he is still on Prednisone. He is not as bad as he was last year but certainly not recovered. Still confused, still achy, can't be weaned off Prednisone. I learned via the internet that Ranbaxy in India who had made the Generic Amoxicillin, that he took, had been warned by the FDA about producing drugs in unsanitary conditions, cross contamination and falsifying records. The FDA has an import alert on 30 of their drugs and Amoxicillin is one of those drugs. Our Dr. has now agreed that a toxin or contaminant in the capsules is probably the cause of my husbands problems. The toxin or contaminant triggered his immune system to attack his body. Our Dr. is willing to write a letter stating his thoughts. I'm wondering if any one else has had anything similiar. If so there might be a class action suit.
