I would like to kick the Ambien habit. I take it only at night, I am fortunate that i haven't had any of the experiences some posted about here. For the most part I take it, and 20 mins later I head off to bed. My husband says I've said funky things, but I've never gotten up and done anything crazy that I don't remember. Mostly, I try to get right in bed before I know it will start working. But, it's been a year and a half and I really think it's time to stop taking it. I tried ot cut down last week, but I didn't sleep right, and my week was miserable. I finally took a full dose on Saturday and of course felt amazing for Sunday. I'm about to move to a new home, and need my strength during the day. I have no idea how I could possibly start cutting it out, when it has helped me psychologically. I know that as a person I have been much better socially since taking it. Not sleeping causes so much havoc on your body and mind and I've had insomnia for as long as I can remember. I don't want to go back to being that person, but I need to do something, I can't stay on this forever. Has anyone had success quitting on their own? I've heard maybe supplementing with Melatonin will help. Though I was on every script, even the Rx melatonin and that never helped. That's when the doctor gave me the ambien. I felt better and they were pleased. So was I, now what do I do?
Many of us have quit on our own, but it is like opening a door to hell and being shoved through. Your doctor seriously screwed you by putting you on ambien - it is a one way ticket, very difficult to quit. The withdrawals and insomnia you will suffer when you quit can be severe, and it takes a very very long time for your brain to reset from the damage ambien does.

I'm not trying to scare you, but the reality is that very few people can just walk away from ambien. It is truly a drug from hell, and the withdrawals are the same as benzo withdrawals (because it does the same thing to the brain) and can last over a year, sometimes two.

Talk to your doctor. They probably have no clue what it takes to quit ambien, but they may be able to help you get off of it.

Hop over to the topix Ambien Withdrawal and Headaches topic, found at http://www.topix.com/forum/drug/ambien/T8MMMF... . There is a lot of traffic there, and a lot of us discussing what it was like to quit the ambien, and the hell ambien makes of our lives.

You would be foolish to do so. The few legitimate places that sell it are extremely expensive. The rest are scams, and if you actually receive anything, it could be tainted or something entirely different.

Don't do it.

I found this post looking up info on ambien. My ex took it and beat me up. As in 911, hospital, legal stuff that is ongoing. I have night terrors, day terrors, hospital bills. I'm moving out of my apartment. Please do not take this drug.

To whom it may concern,
I just felt compelled to express my dismay to those that are willing to go out of their way to have this medication pulled from the shelf. When taken responsibly it can be a life saver. I have chronic pain and a brain injury that has given me terrible insomnia. Sleep is very important to my body. Ambien has safely helped me get the necessary sleep that I NEED. I express my condolences for those that it affected adversely and I wish you the best in dealing with your afflictions. I recognize that you are going through a difficult time.
Please keep in mind that the experiences that you had do not accurately represent the medication, or those that use it as a whole. If I had not been able to sleep I would be even more disabled that I already am. This medication has worked well for me for a very long time and I know many others that have benefited from its medicinal advantages as well.

Please don't go out of your way to take away a medication that helps so many people lead more functional lives because of an unfortunate situation you experienced.
I appreciate this medication, for it has given me a new lease on life. I can SLEEP!! I am grateful that there is something that greatly increases my (and many other's quality of life.
Thank You for your time,
again I wish you ALL the best

I have been taking Ambien for about 5 yrs and I have gained a tremendous amt of weight. I do not sleep-eat but the Ambien seems to increase my appetite at night and lowers my inhibitions about overeating or eating junk food before bed or in the middle of the night. I am awake when I overeat and aware that I shouldn't be eating so much but it is like I am high or something...and just think it will somehow be alright. I am also noticing significant memory problems..forgetting people's names at work, etc. My fiance is even getting concerned about my memory problems. I am trying to get off of it and am considering Melatonin as an alternative..I have hear bad things about Melatonin too, but not as bad as the symptoms I am having from the Ambien.

Hillary - Ambien affects our ability to make healthy/sound decisions. That's why you read about people eating in bed, buying online, driving under the influence. It's like the intoxicated person who wants to drive himself home because he feels okay. Eating at night is something I did a while on Ambien and gained weight. I was on it 5 yrs.; by the end of the 4th year my memory was so impaired I would forget to eat (lost 10 lbs. in a matter of weeks), forgot how to use my washing machine and had to use the manual!!, and when driving to the store for food would completely forget where I was going and why I was in the car. GET OFF this hellish drug. It harms your health and damages the brain. You will heal, but it takes time. When I was on Ambien I had horrible depression, anxiety, anger issues that affected all relationships, body pain, sinus infections, hair loss, and loss of motivation and interest in life. I became a shut in!!! All of these things went away once I got off Ambien. If you decide to quit, go to the thread "Ambien withdrawal and headache". It's an active thread and people post often and can guide you on how to get off safely. Good luck to you!

I have numerous experiences of finding evidence of what I call sleep walking/eating when taking Ambien. I find candy wrappers, even squashed chocolates in my bed. This morning there was the empty can from peanuts. I have no recollection of getting up and going downstairs to find food. My husband has begun hiding snack foods but now worries that I might go out, or drive the car. I have gained weight and have not understood why until realizing that the Ambien is the cause. I have recently tried LUnesta and although it does not work for me, I do not sleep walk/eat. It is definitely connected to Ambien use.
Personally think you all sound quite mad
