It took me about a week and a half to get over the cough once I switched back to Benicar. I feel like a new woman! Good luck all, I hope you all find the right med with the least side effects.

Smokers beware-Lisinoprol may keep you awake at night coughing-and coughing snd coughing...and then some uncontrolable during the day too. Half doses, half the coughs. No doses-NO cough.
Thumbs up to Atenenol!!! or Tenormin, Exforge or benicar.

Lisinopril caused me to cough violently night and day. The doctor changed my prescription to Diovan. I've been taking it 3 weeks now and I'm still coughing, not as much but still coughing. As of last night I quit!

What I would like to know is why a blood pressure medication would have such an odd side effect like coughing? This seems to be a very common reaction, yet so little is told to us by doctors, who end up giving us sinus medications, allergy shots, cough pills/syrup, etc. etc. Why can't they figure it out when they ask you what meds you are on?

The only thing that I can say thank God for the internet. I think we all should research all medications that we are prescribed before taking them.

I have been on Lisinopril for 6 months. I developed a terrible cough after a few months, during the spring, so the doctor put me on 2 allergy meds. That did help a little. The allergy season is now over and I am coughing worse. The nasal spray med and loratadine pills do not seem to be helping. I am coughing so much at night now that I am nearly throwing up. I only have County medical insurance right now, but I have to do something. My blood pressure is not even high, was only high when I had a seizure in Jan from high blood sugar I wasn't aware I had. Could they please take lisinopril off the market?

So unnecessary for all of us poor slobs to be going through this crap! I'm telling you, once I switched, give or take a week, my cough subsided. You cannot imagine how my life (and sleep habits!) have changed. I no longer wake up several times during the night, hacking my brains out.
And, since switching to Benicar, my BP is optimal!

There is no heart problematic history in the family & I've passed a stress test with flying colors! Doc said if I pass a cardiologist then he'll send me to an ENT. I'm betting an ENT could help me. Anyway, tonight I am supposed to go back on Norvasc and I'm quite frightened but I'll give it one more shot. <quoted text> I suggest getting a competent second opinion...

Me too daisy. I felt fine until I started on all these BP meds. I am a little high but most of the time, it is "white coat syndrome" and my pressure is within normal range at home. Anyway, it took about 2 weeks to get over my cough.
I went back to Benicar, switched immediately, and so far, so good.

i also took ramipril for 2 weeks and i nearly died from coughing none stop,im on a new medication now but the cough still continues, recently i had an operation and i mention my problem to the anesthetist and he told me this cough could last for years or even forever, they did warn that you may have a side affect from this medication but it didnt say anything about for life, otherwise there is no way i would have taken this medication, im thinking of suing the company, i hope evrybody does the same

My doctor put me on Benicar at 40mg for my BP as well and have this really bad cough. I've never had it before but now it won't go away. I called my doctors' office and they told me that Benicar doesn't cause coughs and to come see him. I said ok when and they said his next available appointment would be in 1 month - now how is that going to help me??

A good friend of mine coughed for over 16 years. The person thought it was caused by all those years of smoking. The person had quit smoking when due to by-surgery. Apparently that was when the person was put on one of the meds ending in pril.
Once the person went on another med (Benicar), 99% of the coughing left.......... too bad the person went thru that crap for all those years!
The reason I am here on this web site is cause a Google search showed this Thread in Topix as a place of discussion about these meds. I was recently prescribed Lisinopril .......... I plan to go on a diet to drop about 5 or 6 pounds and get started on a walking program....and dump the stress! I believe that will help more than anything!

I wish I had researched this first! I was on Lisinopril for the last month. I tend to cough anyway (never smoked, so unsure why). I even had a chest x-ray before going on the meds and it was clear. I may have allergies. Anyway, the pharmacist at Walgreens said that with 5 mg I likely wouldn't experience any side effects. Was she ever wrong! My cough got steadily worse over the last month. I actually threw up 3 times from violent coughing. Sometimes I felt like I couldn't swallow. I am happy to say I am off it as of today. I lost 15 pounds so we are going to see how it goes. If I still have high b/p I will request something else. I'm a teacher and I need my voice! And, my husband was getting tired of me keeping him up with my coughing.

My mom is taking this same medication and it has been month and a half with few sleep due to constant cough, she has tried so many other blood pressure medicines and all of them cause her side effects. Can I ask what are you taking now? Lisinopril seems to work so well until the cough.

I had taken quinipril for 12 years but after increasing the dosage to 40 mg. per day I developed chronic hoarseness. My doctor has now put me on Losartan 100 mg., but I continue to bothered by hoarseness, and the BP is not low enough. Has anyone had similar side effects?

I also have a dry forceful cough with drugs like Ace inhibitos, Zestril, and less common drugs in the statin families, such as lipitor,,,drs look at me like I'm a nut lol I recently started catapres anyone have problems with this rx ??? I'm stating to cough Chessie wrote: Re Ace Inhibitors: YES they do cause the cough. Cough is listed as one of the possible side effects on the patient information paperwork that came with my prescription. I took Zestril and soon after developed a cough that happened day and night - the nighttime cough was especially difficult because I couldn't get any rest. My doctor also told me it wasn't the med either. I had never had anything like this before - it was a tickle in my throat that would come on at the worst times. After suffering for four more months, I went back to him about the coughing and this time my doctor didn't even review my chart to take note I was on Zestril. He was ready to give me a steroid type med when I happened to mention I was on Zestril and then he told me not to take it anymore. duh. I stopped taking it but it was a full week before the cough went away - so don't give up when after a couple days you are still coughing. It takes about 7 days for the drug to get out of your system and stop the coughing. I'm now on a beta blocker and my blood pressure is in the normal range and I feel much better. Wishing you the best ---

My PA told me that any medicine for the heart that ends in "pril" could cause coughing. Hi- what did you get your BP medicine changed to? I just realized that my BP medicine, Lisinopril 10mg once daily, has been causing my cough which I have had for 2.5 months. Also, has your cough gone away? Thank you.
