Accutane and constipation

I have been on accutane for exactly 2wks now and have the usual side effects- dry skin, chapped lips, nose bleeds and Im breaking out. I was prepared for all of this though. I hadnt heard any mention of being constipated though and I am having a really hard time with it!! Will my body adjust?? Is anyone else having this problem?

i don't think constipation is a side effect, that could just be... ya'know. constipation! Eat raisins and drink cramberry juice i'll make things a lot easier.

Thanks Radlaa, unfortunately after speaking to a few other people apparently it is a side effect because it is drying your whole body out. Im going to give the cranberry juice and raisins a try though ;)

Just plenty of fresh fruit and raw veg is best for that. Nuts and seeds, should be in anyone's diet anyway, be extra nice to your body when on accutane. It needs it

Yes, it's a side effect...it's easy to chew metamucil tabs

Accutane dries you out... If your insides are drier, then yes, its makes since that it would be a side-effect. Make sure to keep yourself hydrated.

Prunes and prune juice are the best natural remedy.

Try to eat a whole salad every day or at least some fruits/vegetable.

Salad always kept me regular while I was on accutane.

Thanks alot Paul, ive been trying the prune juice.. it has me going just still not like id like to be. I also saw someone else mentioned in another topic that vitamin c and magnesium work but they werent sure you can take those vitamins while on accutane. Do you know anything about it?

It's is MOST DEFINATELY a side effect..but my skin looks fab so I'll deal.

I have been taking Accutane for 1 week only and already have the dry lips and dry skin but I have been constipated since day one, and reading all the comments it looks like it's a side effect, I knew it was, it's comforting to know other people might be experiencing the same..have to take better care now and start with the prunes :)

I have had all sorts of acne for years and even the scaring acne which was very dissapointing , Proactive or Accutane didn't even work, now im living life again , don't miss out on this!

I was had a dermatology app. last week and began accutane on saturday. He told me to take 1000 MG of Vit E and Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser and use it without water. just apply and take the access off with a towel. I have been doing that and my skin is still fresh! try it out it works GREAT!

Hey I am on month five and I haven't been quite regular but I dealt with it. Then on this last month I got upped in dosage and have been having the worst constipation. It is horrible and it seems I have tried everything..upping water intake, eating tons of fiber. Don't really know what else to do. Guess I'll try prunes and cran juice

I developed really bad constipation in week six of taking accutane. Tried fibre but didn't work. Had to use glycerine suppository while taking Movicol (stool softener). Two weeks later, I am only using the Movicol and am very relieved, the pain was terrible. Please remember to drink loads of water min 1.5l a day.

I am on 60mg of accuane, and was also constipated. Try benefibre, you put it in your tea or water and its tasteless. Works great.

Good so I the the only one!! I have been on it for 3 weeks and very constipated! I took stool softener pill yesterday and that chocolate candy it suppose to help. Even my noise has been try!! I think my inside is more dry than my face! So fare I have been braking out here and there, however I have seen difference in my face but still not what I want so I'll continue to suffer and handle the pain!:)

I stopped taking the medicine after that. It has been three months, and nothing has changed since I stopped taking accutane. Metamucil, benefiber, herbal lax and miralax, nothing helps most of it makes it worse. I'm 21, in the best shape of my life, frequent the gym. Something has gone awfully wrong, but I got blood work done, my liver checked, and no diarreah, just constipation for 2-3 days at a time for the last 3 months. I'll keep you all posted on the eventual diagnosis.

Joey--I'm my 50's--took accutane in late twenties--in good physical shape--but plagued by chronic constipation--similar experience to yours--nothing seems to work long term---pursue new approachs constantly--how can we assist each other in searching for the constipation cure?

I feel bad about bringing a very old topic back but I am wondering if Jeff or Joey are still around. I also had to discontinue accutane because of distension, constipation, cramps, and extremely loud digestion. I'm writing this 8 months after I stopped accutane and there has been no improvement with my IBS but I'm currently faced with recurring acne and the desire to get back on it regardless of the effects. I'd like to talk to either one of you about this so hopefully you have subscribed to the thread via email.
