Hello,

I have been on accutane for one week now. I find I am more tired than usual. Has anybody else found fatigue to be a side effect?

Thanks!

Fairly common side effect. It's vitamin toxicity. You are overdosing on vitamin A basically and your system is reacting.

In the beginning of my treatment I wasn’t tired. Toward about the third or so month I started becoming drowsier. I sleep much longer than I did when I wasn’t using accutane and I get tired much quicker. This side effect wasn't listed in my medication information but I spoke with a nurse who said she experienced the same thing while using the medication.

I've been on accutane since the beginning of February. I am down to my last week of pills, and I have discovered over the last past three or four weeks that I have been extremely exhausted... I didn't read it in my side effects either but I am very curious if the accutane has anything to do with it. I go to bed earlier than normal, I get plenty of sleep but when I get to work it feels like I haven't slept in days... I have no clue of why I am so tired. Has anyone checked into their tiredness with the doctor? I havent yet, but i will at my appoint ment on next thursday

"I have no clue why Im so tired"
"I didnt read it in the side effects"

Well clueless, the liver is the "army" of the body because it carries out so many functions especially metabolism and energy.

The side effects stated very clearly that it effects the liver and if I recall off hand...... permanently.

Now. You go back to the doctor and what the hell do you expect him to say when you just took 6 months worth of a drug that was initially designed as a drug for chemo cancer treatment and now your tired because you have organ damage as a result?

Whats he supposed to say? "Here take this NEW drug to fix that problem".

Yeah the accutane has something to do with it. You have altered your liver for no reason at all just like others have found out that they have the same thing or cant figure out why they have elevated liver enzymes and other liver problems.

All your body wanted in the first place to allieviate the inflammatory acne was RAW FOOD and elimination of toxins such as MILK, sodium chloride etc.

and i'm extremely exhausted. i myself found this on a google search to see if other people have experienced this. i have trouble getting to sleep and when i wake up, i have trouble staying awake. i take long naps and go to bed early and i'm still overly tired. the only day i felt a little awake was the day i slept an entire day away. when i don't have plans on the weekends, this has become my new activity unfortunately /:

I am in my fourth month of Accutane. I started feeling overly tired as early as the first couple of weeks. Someone even asked me at work if I was sick because my eyes look so tired. Despite this, I have still been working out and trying to remain active, but it has become harder month after month.

I have also noticed a severe change in my attitude. It hasn't helped since I have had allot on my shoulders the last few months. In fact, it has made it allot worse for me and those around me.

I had no other severe side effects besides the exhaustion and depression. I decided to take Accutane regardless of the risks because I have a rare skin condition that really has no other proven effective treatment, besides isotretinoin. Unfortunately, the medicine is not working for me.

My doctor should be calling me today and I am telling them that I am coming off of the med. I am not trying to deter anyone else from trying the medication. Just wanted to share my story. If the Accutane was actually working for me, I would stick it out because I have lasted this long. Unfortunately, I had to weigh my options and make a wise decision.

I'm on my third month of Accutane and have been tired the entire time so far; I felt that side effect even after my first pill. I'm really hoping this isn't permanent, so I am going to experiment and see if my energy levels increase when I stop the drug for a week or so.

Hi Silverado, and other posters
I would like to correct you - accutane does not permanently alter liver function. I think attributing fatigue to Vitamin A toxicity without the other symptoms is a bit excessive.
Secondly, even though accutane did turn out to be a treatment for cancer does not mean it is ineffective as treatment for acne. Zyoban is an anti-depressant but used to stop smoking. Aspirin is for headahces, but it can prevent heart attacks. Let's not be petty...

My advice to the posters is that there are symptoms that go with Accutane, and that it is your, and your dermatologist's responsibility to be aware of this and to communicate about it. If you are experiencing fatigue, make sure you get adequate sleep and try not to drink too many caffeniated drinks.
I've been on accutane for 3 months now. I'm expeirencing all the typical symptoms: dry skin/lips/eyes, sensitivity to the sun, muscular pain and fatigue. My liver enzymes jumped after the first month, but they're still under the maximum allowed for accutane (and i do all the right things: i don't drink, don't smoke, don't eat fatty food, run half marathons etc). My dermatologist is one of the best, and is highly recommended, and I've been assured that this will not be permanent etc. Besides the side effects, I am extremely pleased with the results. I think if you acne, and can tolerate the side effect, then go for it! And a side effect doesn't always DANGER - if you can tolerate it, don't worry about it.
BUT I really do feel that if you have a problem, you should communicate with your doctor and not the layman (I don't mean this offensively). THe most educated person on the topic is your dermatologist, who has had experience with this drug, and its side effects. They should ALWAYS be the first person that you contact regarding any symptoms. Best of luck, and I hope that you see beautiful reasults.

Sorry, I meant:
"I think if you have acne, and can tolerate the side effects, then go for it! And remember, a side effect doesn't always spell out DANGER - if you can tolerate it, don't worry about it (if you dermatologist doesn't think it's a worry either)"

Also, Silverado: I think that attributing raw veggies and so forth as a solution to acne may be a little big overvalued. I don't doubt that a very health diet, that is well balanced, and filled with fresh fruit and veggies can only contribute to a healthy skin. However, I think that there are some people who have extremely severe acne that is unconnected to their diet. I agree that there are environmental changes that can be made: diet, wash face, do exercise, don't pick your skin, change your pillow cases and so forth - but I do not believe that will solve all cases of acne. Additionally, I think that your post on this website displays a lack of sensitivity and understanding towards those that do truly experience severe acne, and the frustration that accompanies it.

i'm in the middle of week five of my accutane treatment...i've always had trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep for as long as i can remember. it's mostly because i have adhd and can't stay still for very long... but its weird cause lately, once i fall asleep, I can sleep thru the ENTIRE night.
which is great but i also wake up very tired and am tired a lot during the day. i always wanna take a nap and yeah, i do think its the accutane.
always tired

OMG!! I've only been on the stuff for less than a week and by day 4 was feeling knackered. Couldn't understand why and thought I was overworked. Am good for nothing at about 5pm in the evening and usually have to sleep for a couple of hours. I feel sick all day and am lethargic. I dont know whether I can carry on like this for 6 months. My lips also hurt and became dry as early as day 4. Am pleased that its started to get into my system but its hell already. Does it get better or just worse as the months go on? Help!

Been on it for almost four and a half months. Bad acne started clearing up good after 2 months and got better. Medicine has left me tired and made it extremely hard to cocentrate in school and work full time. Dry itchy eyes, fatigue, always feeling weak and not near enough energy to complete a full work out. So can't wait untill I am done and can have more energy and enjoy life more without having to worry about scarring acne. I am happy got the drug to finally get over acne after like 6 years, hope it stays away.

Hi everyone i am on my second course of roacutane of 60mg daily i think it's the best drug u can get for acne it's all in the mind if you let the side affects bring you down then it will! The way i deal with it is looking at my old pictures to remind me of my acne and the side affects seems nothing to what i experienced with this horrible skin condition.I am 23 and married with 2 kids i am always tired and my lips look terrible (even tho i bring vaseline with me everywhere)! but i know at the end i will have amazing skin and so will everyone on roacutane..

Hope this is helpfull XX

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Sagittarius

Relationships have been going through through testing times since the Solar Eclipse at last month's New Moon in Gemini on May 20. Events may force you to reevaluate the state of a partnership. You may even decide that you need to make some major adjustments if things are to carry on as you would like. During the coming fortnight leading up to the rare second New Moon in Gemini, this may feel like a crisis, but that doesn't mean you should abandon all hope or throw out the baby with the bathwater.
