Is there any data on the safety of pregnancy years after discontinuing accutane use?

I took Accutane in 1985- I have a healthy 7 year old born in 1996 - I do believe that the Accutane that I took affected him in that his lips peel as mine did for 20 years after taking it but I have not heard of future infertility.

I took accutane about 12 years, have a healthy baby girl who is 1. I also am bipolar and discovered this after taking accutane but it runs in my family; and by no way do I contribute it to the drug. I also wouldn't trade the dramatic improvement to my skin and self esteem after taking it. Anyone who has severe acne and is not planning on becoming pregnant in the near future I would recommend it to.

I took Acutane 2 different times as a teenager. I experienced severe cracking around my lips, hair loss, depression and joint pain. After my treatment was completed, my symptoms disappeared, but it took several months. My acne has returned and I am now in my 30's. I am contemplating taking the medication again, but I'm very concerned with all the side effects.

Alot of dermatologists don't perscribe accutane anymore. Not that's so dangerous. It's because of all the paper work and the problem of birth defects females deal with.Females are the ones who take the most risk in accutane because of birth defects the could pottentialy give ot hier new borns. Let me remind you that acutane works great, but are side affects. If you are closely monitored by a dermatologist and are aware of serious side affects and don't ignore all side affects, then you will be alright. It will work. Once you notice something different happing to you whether it's mentally or physically than you should immediatly consult your dermatolgist and get frequent blood work done. Remeber it is up to you.

according to webmd.com accutane does not cause infertility in women...but if u think about it, this drug has been on the market for only about 25 yrs so much is still unknown in terms of long term side effects.the drug is supposed to be out of ur system within a month..so im assuming that after one month, you are safe to hve children...but accutane does effect ur hormones..so i dunno im confused myself.

I recommend that all doctors should stop prescribing Accutane. I used it 5 years ago and had severe depression and became suididal. Personally, I think living with acne is better than death...

did the depression diminish after treatment? or are u still depressed? i'm always sore and irritable...maybe even a little depressed...but i refuse to tell my derm and hve him pull me off the 'miracle drug'. ill just deal with it..clear skin is worth it. hey think about this...acne has some major side effects too.

Hey! I gotta tel ya, my doctor (derm) reccommended that I shouldn't plan on getting pregnant for at least one full year. This is very scary.
p.s. I don't think the results of accutane are permanent. I'm getting acne again after a year of treatment, about 6 yrs. ago. Be careful everyone.

I just started accutane, this is my second day, and im confused. Is it true once you stop taking accutane you will never have acne again? What precautions should i be taking? Medicated lip balm so they dont crack? Alot of water? I do not have enough knowledge on this medicine.

heather,
thanx for the advice. but this is absolutely absurd and dissappointing. so this so-called 'miracle pill' jeopardizing my physical and emotional health is not permanent? im sorry that u relapsed...it sucks... but were u doing any type of treatment after tane to maintain ur clear skin? and the pregnacy thing...i keep hearing rumors that tane causes infertilization in many women...that scares me! but avoiding pregnacy for a year sounds like a very good idea.btw, ive been on tane for about 40 days and seen no obvious improvement.should i be concerned?my face isnt even dry and im taking 60mg and im very petite too. kind of strange.i mean, the other sife effects are there except for my skin drying which aparently is a very common side effect.

thanx

abbey,

i did hrs of research on accutane...here is some advice...

* buy a bunch of lip products! i apply lip balm every half hr. i reccomend the neutrogena lip treatment u can get from save-on. i heard aquaphor is good too but ive never tried it..never in stock in the drug store.
*drink plenty of water...good for ur liver.kidney.
*dnt eat/drink too much vitamin A. accutane shocks ur body on vit A 100 times more than needed every day. so no carrot juice...eggs..etc..keep ur consumption of vit A in moderation.
*accutane may cause hair loss and eye lash shedding..i experienced this within a month..totally sucks...so u should buy some nioxin shampoo before u even start to shed...to prevent hair loss. it also causes dandruff..almost everyone experiences this. i never had a problem with dry scalp...but within a month, i started getting dandruff. u can use a scalp treatment of some sort.
*no alcohol.u dnt want ur liver to suffer.
*accutane is fat soluble..so if u want ur body to receieve full effect of the drug, take it with food rich in fat (good fats) before taking ur pill, eat an avocado or a handfull of peanuts.
*may cause depression...i myself am very moody most days ...and irritable...and just plain bitter. all my friends are noticing my personality slowly change...i went from being the super girlie perky school pride chick to borderline depressed. pretty scary.
*my arms look disgusting! i keep scractching! i suppose some eucerin cream might help.
*oh and heres a big one. ur immune system is very weak...and ur body cnt fight back...so it takes ur body a very long time to heal...so no waxing! or u wnt heal for days maybe weeks. i remember getting my brows waxed...and i didnt heal for about 5 days. also, dnt dye or highlight ur hair..ur scalp is too sensitive.

hope it helps!

I'm about to start accutane in a week or so and I'm having second thoughts! I'm getting married in less than a year and want perfect flawless skin. Is it worth the risk of dealing all the side effects? HELLP

Accutane basically saved me from low self esteem. It TOTALLY works. I have read that it's safer than ever thought before... does not affect fertility. I took Accutane and my ONLY problem/side effect was dry lips. That's it! It does take a few months to work and your acne may get worse before it gets better. It's a MIRACLE DRUG!!!!!

Daily Horoscope for June 4

Aries

Take care today Aries, because the emotional landscape in your neighborhood will be full of pitfalls during the coming fortnight, as it has been since the Solar Eclipse on May 20. The more convinced you are that you're right, the harder it will be to navigate your way around forthcoming events. If you feel resentful of someone, perhaps a neighbor or sibling, you need to get your feelings out in the open, rather than burying them deeper, where they'll fester and lead to more problems in the long run.
