Zach, many people will find blood on their toilet paper. Your lips and anus are basically made of the same stretchy material, and seeing how chapped your lips get, you can only imagine what it's doin to your butt. You should definately monitor this closely, but i wouldn't lose any sleep over this unless your stools themselves are bloody. Bloody stools are an indication of internal bleeding, bloody toilet paper is an indication of external bleeding of the anus. Vitamin E is supposed to help with body dryness internally and externally which is why many of us are taking this. I have had the same problem, I notice it about once a week. It scared me at first, but it is normal.

as far as alcohol goes, alcohol is a drying agent. It will only make things worse for you. It also puts extra strain on the liver. Coffee will also dry you out. Water should be your drink of choice while on this drug. I understand you want to drink, but everytime you do you are prolonging the progress of clearing your skin. Dry skin will produce more sebum to compensate, producing more pimples. If you are addiment about drinking, them please alternate each beverage with a small glass of water. You will still get wasted, but your body will be better able to cope, and you will have less of a hangover. Also, many people smoke butts when they are drinking, and this is also something you should try not to do while taking accutane, as it decreases circulation and dries out your skin and body as well. It also gives your body more toxins to excrete through your skin, and the tar in second hand smoke will clog your pores. This information applies to everyone, even those not on accutane. Good luck with everything:)

Zach, you should definitely call your dermatologist and let him/her know what's up. He/She'll advise and refer you as to what to do next. Hope everything goes well.

P.S. Alcohol + Accutane = NOT GOOD!!!

Im on accutane also and today my stool was bloody. Im not taking it anymore because today in the LA times they said it had been prooven that accutane is the direct cause of kidney failure in patients that stoped taking accutane many years ago.

I have noticed that I have bleeding when I pass stools, it's not only on the toilet paper but also in the toilet bowl. I have been on roaccutane for just over a month. This is accompanied with severe pain as well. Could this be caused by the roaccutane.

Yep. Your drying your internal organs as well since accutane shuts off water retention collagen hyalauronic acid production body-wide.

All your body really wanted was a raw food diet in the first place and you wouldnt have acne.

You may as well be eating rat poisen.

Stop the accutane or find out the hard way.

i am in my 5th month on accutane, and i have drank while on it. and i also had bloody stools for a about 2 or 3 days but then they were gone. in my opinion, i dont really know if drinking while on accutane damages you though. ihave gotten drunk twice and had maybe 3 beers over the five months and i have seen no side affects, but what i am worried about is what is going to happen to my liver in 5 or 10 years. my friend was on accutane a year ago and he drank acouple times but he is fine now, so i dont really know waht will happen. Also, my derm never personally told me not to drink, i only saw the sticker on the packaging and then looked it up. so i would think that if drinking on accutane was EXTREMEMLY dangerous, she would have told me.

The problem with drinking while on accuatane is that alcohol is a toxin broken down and excreted by your liver. Accutane itself can cause liver problems/inflammation in some people, so adding the strain of breaking down alcohol is not a good idea. I couldn't tell you about the long term effects, I would suggest you do some more research to see if any studies have been done. As for kidney failure, that would not explain bloody stools. The kidneys filter the blood and produce urine, and kidney failure causes decreased urine output or bloody urine, but it wouldn't cause bloody stools. Bloody stools (large amounts of blood in the stool itself, or coffee-grind looking stool from partially digested blood) suggest a bowel problem, like irritable bowel disease or colitis. Bright red spots on the toilet paper or a small bright red streak on the outside of a stool, especially if accompanied by sharp pain when passing the stool, are probably from anal bleeding that occurs when the sphincter stretches apart. Just like when you smile with chapped lips and get a crack that bleeds. Either way you want to talk to your doctor about this to find out if you should stop the drug or if there is something else you can do to deal with that side effect.

I was on accutane for 6 months roughly 20 years ago; I'm sure I drank from time to time, but it was a few beers a couple of time per week--if that. I drank heavily in my 20s (binge drinking 3-4 days per week, and no drinks on other days). I'm now in my mid 30s, and I drink a few glasses of wine or beer a couple of times per week. Blood tests for my liver have always come back normal over the years (as recently as a year ago). That said, I infrequently experience the following symptoms after drinking: bloody stools, unexplained itching, distended abdomen (I'm thin, so it's not a beer belly, it's a noticable distention in the lower abdomen), and I've lost roughly 10 pounds in the last year (again, I'm thin, so it's not from dieting or anything induced). I'd like to enjoy a glass or two of wine or beer from time to time, but should I consider not drinking anymore? Are these symptoms signs of temporary damage or permanent?

That sounds very true. I would agree on that. My dad tells me to eat a peice of orange before meals and after to cut the grease in my blood to stop the acne from forming.

Smart one. So basically anyone with acne is just really unhealthy. Do you really think people would rather take accutane than change their diet? Please don't comment unless you have been educated on the subject. What are you doing in this discussion anyway, go eat an apple.

My Fiance took accutane years ago when he was in high school. He quit taking it after his triglycerides were high enough that he should have had a heart attack and died. While on accutane he had several symptoms that carried over to even today, and one of those is bloody stool. Any time he drinks more than a glass of wine, or a beer it makes it much worse.

To those of you on accutane, please take care of yourselves, and get off it asap.

I have only been on Accutane for about three weeks now and the only side affect I noticed was having dried and chapped lips. I have not had a drink of alcohol while being on this medication. I barely ever drink at all. I am 18 and in my first year of college. I read all about the side affects and long terms ones. Went over everything with my doctor as well. Today I went to the bathroom and found blood on the toilet paper and some white stool. I did not see it in the toilet its self though. Should I be worried, and tell me doctor? This is the first time I have seen it ever in my life. I was reading this and thought maybe it was because someone said it could be dry but I want to make sure its nothing serious. I worry a lot when it comes to my health. I am someone who is scared to die young. Please give back good helpful feed back. Thanks

To all the people here that are saying get off accutane and eat healthy, not everybody has acne because of that. I'm 18 years old, have a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and have a great overall well-being and hygiene. Unfortunately, my Junior Year in high school I got a bunch of acne on my face and a little on my chest and back. Acne CAN BE VIRAL, not bacterial. I believe the stories I hear about how bad accutane courses can go, and I understand the risk, but it did wonders for my skin so don't be afraid of the drug if you've tried everything else.
