Wisdom wrote: Someone tell me the incentive to keep addicts on methodone. Is it to divert the drug $ to a US pharma company , instead of it going to heroin dealers? . Um the point is that ,if the program is followed correctly it keeps people from spreading hep c, HIV,etc. And the crime rates drop in the places that there effective and properly ran clinics. No one is talking about how many lives it's saved , and how many drugies can end up going back to school or work .

Pay Up wrote: I don't know a lot about the methadone program, nor politics, but I have known what it's like to be an addict, and here's the way I see it. I don't think that when they came up with this alleged 'solution' to heroin addiction umpteen decades ago, that they were thinking long term, but that indeed is what it has become - long term. Why? Because it's been made easier to remain an addict, as long as you're addicted to something. My own brother, was addicted to heroin, is now on a methadone maintenance program. Medicaid pays for this. MEDICAID? I'm ashamed of him. This is a 47 year old, able-bodied intelligent man who works part time and is on MEDICAID? Unbelievable. Yet I, with two kids of my own, divorced, going to school and working toward a degree, AND working part time, has to beg and scratch for any kind of TEMPORARY help. It makes me sick. Instead, they should have incorporated some kind of therapy (read: recovery program) which is FREE, into this 'substitution program' instead of this FREE government hand out, and the idea of letting an addict take his free drugs home is just plain STUPID!!! The very idea of 'normal' has not been forced on these addicts by virtue of this 'ideal' If it's free, they should be made to come daily for their dose and that's it. Otherwise, wean yourselves off it! It sounds like you need to have a long talk with brother, cause it's not FREE Drugs. So many people misunderstand Methadone, It's not enjoyment for anyone. It's supposed for Maintenance program until you able to detox off it, But, who are you to say when he's ready to detox? Only a Counselor & or Medical doctor can determine this. I wished people would clearly understand the benefits for people, who would be robbing, stealing & or dying on the streets from Heroin addiction. Is this what you would rather see. SEEK some real information so that you can better understand the program before you go making assumptions. There are people who misuse the programs, but it's not FREE Drugs from the GOVT. like so many people think? It's a helpful program for those who really want the HELP, but some people just aren't ready to get off when family think they should. IT's not about you, it's about ADDICTION. There are alot of sucesses that nobody ever hears about! that's one thing I don't like about it, But I could see where your frustrated, but have a talk with his counselor if you have questions.

I have had 2 brother in laws on Methadone and they never have weaned them off the drug. One brother in law no longer takes it because he is dead. He was a long term user several years and they never weaned him off. My other brother in law is currently on it (legally). He has not even been in the program a year and they are giving him a 30 day supply. There seems to be very little checks and balances.Lawmakers need to ask for the records of those that have been weaned off and see what percentage it is. I'm sure it is little or none. Now, to give him a 30 day supply in less than a year. That is definitely an illegal operation they have going on there. Your other brother who passed. In which I'm sorry for your loss... Really I am. it sounds to me like he may have been using MMT for pain management. Most clinics don't like to promote pain management as their service. But, that is what alot of us use it for. We stay on it because if we get off are surgeries from the past that nag us. Will be in manageable. If I were to get off I would be on so much ibuprofen... Which is very harmful to the liver. There is a reason we all use it. But that is my experiences and statistics I have gathered in which patients prolong the use. Thanks and hope I didn't offend anybody. God bless!
