I have severe pain in my lower back and leg. I also have pinched nerves. I was on 100mg of methadone a day 300 10mg tablets a month. my doctor has recently started weaning me down i am now at 40mgs a day. It has been a huge decrease and he is not understanding the side effects of this decrease. I am trying to find a doctor for a second opinion. I have been on the methadone for 5 years with percocet for the break thru. I could do with out the break thru because it has no effect. the methadone blocks it. I am only alowed to see a certain amount of pain doctors in a years time because of my insurance. So I dont want to see a doctor that isnt going to help me. if anyone has any ideas on what to do please help! I have never failed a uring screen or gave the doctor any reason to think im a drugs seeker. I think he has got in some kind of trouble and is taking all of his methadone patients off. Which is not my fault. Ive tried pretty much all the meds out there from oxycontin to morphine and methadone is the only one that helps. Please help me!

I am in the same position as you...the other opiates require such high doses. Methadone has given me my life back but I cant find any doctor to continue it. I'm not an addict and have even been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. Now doctors only offer me suboxone because methadone has stigma attached to it. I live in indiana as well

I've been on methadone for a long time and am trying to taper off but with an 1 hour and fifteen minute drive(that's without snow)each way, plus gas its just too hard. Hi there..Welcome to Wisconsin!
Do you suffer from any kind of chronic pain? Because that's usually the only way they'll prescribe it. I'm not sure which part of the state you are in, but leave an email address and we'll talk!

Oxys have been around since 95. Called hillbilly heroin here in the east. A lot of people in kentucky...a lot of coal miners were prescribed the drug and it became a epidemic. Payin 80 bucks a pill and a lot of ODs. Gov. Has passed laws causing even the methadone to be regulated....so good luck getting it from a doctor. U will have to go to pain management clinic. Methadone clinics are BS...they are ripping off the state with that BS...unless u find one that give pills. Plus methadpne is worse than heroin to detox off of.
Their all opiates....methadone just gets into your bones. I was in clinic for 3 years and lost al my teeth. Now I'm back to square one. Opiates in general cause more pain than u might actually have after years of use. Broke my neck when I was. 21 now 36 and still battling addiction. Hear gopd things about suboxon...just can't afford it. Good luck!4
You have to be kidding me, right?? People like you are what give methadone, and the clinics a "bad" name! It DOES NOT get into your bones, nor was it the cause of you losing all of your teeth! Methadone has a longer half-life than most other pain meds.Look it up! As for your teeth, when you are hooked on drugs you care about nothing! And well as for brushing your teeth, I guesing its not always at the top of your TO-DO list. I have been taking methadone for almost 4 years now. I was on lortabs, percocet, muscle relaxers, my doc tried everything to manage my pain. After years of pain meds, nothing works anymore because your body builds a tolerance. Then I had a doctor prescribe methadone. Its saved my life. Not only am I not in pain, I have ALL of my teeth. Never had a cavity in my life. Its called brushing your teeth. My sister has let her teeth rot out of her head, and this is exactly what she says "oh,the methadone rotted my teeth!" Just someone or something else to blame. If people would get educated about methadone, and addiction I know they would change their opinion. I thought the same things! Methadone has allowed me to be pain free and live a productive life.I have been on the same dose for 3 years. I'm so sick of hearing about how dangerous methadone is. You tell someone your on it, and automatically you're scum. I want to know how many deaths there were where methadone was the ONLY contributing factor! Theres not going to be many. What drug isnt dangerous when mixed with a cocktail of other dangerous drugs? Lets get educated people. Methadone is actually very safe and effective when used the correct way and monitored very closely.

Hey Fullofpain !!!

Why don't you call your local hospitals ??? Ask if they have a Pain Management Center IN THE HOSPITAL !!! If they don't have one in the hospital, ask where the doctors refer patients who suffer from chronic pain ? My Pain Management Center is in the hospital that I usually go to for outpatient procedures, MRIs, etc. It really shouldn't be that hard to find a legitimate Pain MD. Try looking in a phone book under "Pain Management". Almost every medium-sized to large hospital has a Pain Management Department.

It is a myth that while taking methadone you build up a tolerance or resistance to it. I have taken the same amount for years now, and it still works great for me. Recently, 6 months ago I was taken off of it because I had gone to a doctor in the interim that only cared about money and when I became functional and got my own insurance, he did not want to see me any longer as I was no longer paying him cash. He cared nothing about his patients' pain. I found a doctor to prescribe it to me, and yes breakthrough medication will work too. I know because I have taken the medication. When I was off of it, I thought at first the problem was the withdrawals, but the longer I was off of it, the worse my pain became. Hence, my disease was still causing lots of pain. Other medications would work but none worked as well as methadone. It is a good pain medication but doctors fear it. However, if a person takes it as prescribed they can thrive and will never need increasing amounts beyond what they find initially to be effective. I would like to help you Thomas, but all of these people seem to think they know so much more on the matter. Write again if you would like a name of a very good pain doctor in Texas.
Maximilian wrote:
<quoted text>Thomas, I have no idea why they would give you suboxone for pain as it has naloxone in it and does very little for pain. You were probably better off with the MS Contin. I only ask that you be careful before you enter down the methadone path, because guess what? It won't allow anything else in the receptors either, your breakthrough pain meds will be ineffective, though I'm sure people will tell you otherwise, its just a fact which it why it was so effective in the first place for treating addiction. Many people build tolerance quickly and are raised to astronomical doses, go to methadone sucks and read Cheryl's story. I used to be certified in pain management and have a Dr. that keeps me updated. Please read others stories on the forum, give us some more info on yourself regarding your pain and why you were place on suboxone. Is the pain visceral(doesn't sound like it) somatic(maybe) or nerve pain? These are things even pain management Dr's often fail to ask but should, and because methadone is cheap, they just pull out the pad without thinking of the ramifications. Max

I forgot to mention that the literature will tell you that methadone not only does not cause tolerance but it in fact works better over time. I have migraines and it does not cause migraines. The fear of it lies behind the fact that it has a delayed sedation effect and many people have died by mixing it with other sedatives, alcohol or just abusing the drug. The literature also will tell you that it's important to go to a physician that knows how to prescribe this medication. Under prescribing methadone can be just as dangerous as over prescribing it. Thomas, again, I really want to help, but you must decide who you wish to believe. I am speaking as a professional member of the healthcare community and a patient. When I met my husband, he had severe pain. I convinced him to try methadone and he has never needed any other sort of pain reliever either. We are not addicts. It is important to realize that dependence is not synonymous with addiction. If you take the medication and your level of functioning is increased, then it is helping and that is the purpose. If you take the medication however, and you feel euphoric and sleepy all the time and do not wish to do anything, then you should not be taking it. The purpose of it is to help you function, not allow you to sit around and feel high. However, if taken as prescribed for real chronic pain, provided you could find a doctor to prescribe it, it could provide you the most relief you have ever had from a medication and you'll never need anymore of it to achieve the same pain relief. I do not need to listen to the negative comments about this to know how I and countless others have benefited from this medication in a positive way. When I first had my problem, I went on disability. After I got on methadone, I was able to get a career and work full time. When I was taken off of it because of a greedy doctor's want of money, I nearly lost my job and did temporarily lose my ability to function again. Now, I am back at work. The doctor who first put me on this medication was not quick to pull out a pad and write for this medication. In fact, it was the last drug he tried with me. However, he had experience and a PhD to go along with his MD and I've never met a more caring doctor. He knew the mechanisms of pain medications inside and out, and he told me it was a very good pain reliever, although a person has to be watched closely at first because of the delayed sedative effect. That doctor never lost a patient to an overdose of any kind.

Everyone is not the same. Metadone is a wonderful pain killer.I have been on methadone for chroic pain for over fifteen yrs..I don't think there is any drug that will take of my back pain away but my quitty of life is much better which I think is the whole point.and yes I am aware that methadone is an opiate antasintic which means it is a blocker. If it is taken as needed it really does work. For instace going to a clinic for chock pain is bs because it will help for addiction metadone has to be taken several times a day and depending on your level of pain taking over thirty mg at a time is only wasting it. I have been forced into a clinic because of relocating in my life and in some areas in our country dr.s are either dead set against it or think it is the best thing since sliced bread so any time i have moved if I end up some where that no one will write me it's back to a clinc because yes u are addict to methadone and will become very I'll not to mention back to squre one with pain because like I said earlier taking a large dose all at once just is not for pain management as they will be glad to tell u at a clinic. So say want u will about methadone .I personally think it does work and no I don't think anything u take for choric is going to make u pain free but This drug
really helps me.

I am reading the same thing over and over again.looking at most of the comments on this page. I can see that we all think tibias a good drug forbour choric pain. It is a shame that we cannot get it as a rx in certain parts of our courtly because of what other people think.I no if half of the Heath care care system had chroic pain we would not have to listen to what a horrible drug methadone is lol. It would be great if we could all work together and help people out in finding doctors who do write methadone in cerain areas. I no what they say about the state of fl. And pain mang. But I no I have yahoo had a problem in this state getting a rx of methadone if u think if we all put in info about pain mang. Drs. In our area it would help a lot of people out. I don't no anyone else will help us . I no of several drs. In fl. That have there own web. Site one is dr. David vandercar in Tampa. By all means read his site. I no before all thesenlaws were set up he was seeing pts. From as far away as teen. And I no for a fact pts Went once a month and got a rx just so they could go to work. Not everyone can go by a clinic everyday. I also keep hearing how people can,t even that a large enough dose because they could lose there job and have to suffer all day and wait till they are off to take enough to help with pain that is so stupid. I no I would not even be able to work unless I could take my meeds and yes I was a health care worker.first of all if these employers are not doctors what right do they have to tell u want dose to tale

You're feeling ultra optimistic today, which is great for summoning up the necessary energy to do what has to be done. But don't let it go to your head and convince you that you're capable of performing miracles. If you aren't behaving in this way you'll have to cope with someone who has a swollen head and thinks they're the cat's whiskers.
