I'm going to start a coffeshop and put time clocks on each table, hooked up to an electrocution mechanism for lingerers... and no students. Cash and carry, in the front door, out the back.

If they made the coffeeshops here like the ones in Amsterdam, I guarantee that would also increase profits for the shopowner - espresso drinks mixed in with pot brownies? They'd be making twice as much money as they do now.

I was at Coffee Cat a few months ago and I was doing work on the Internet and talking on my cellphone. I used to use Coffee Cat for my business during the morning. The owner came up to me and told me to take my conversation outside. I explained to him that I had to have the speakerphone on because I couldn't hear on my phone very well. He just shook his head and told me to go outside. Then he apologized to the people around me, I guess because he thought I was bothering them. What a jerk! I came back and packed up my laptop and printer and never went back. I spent at least $3 every morning there. I hope he misses that.
So you are the guy who makes sure everyone hears his business. Newsflash: Some of us actually go out to a coffeehouse to really socialize with other people and have a pleasant conversation, and to get away from work. Some of us non phone users are actually trying to be polite and not listen to your conversation, but geez, you put it on speakerphone. I bet you are also one of those people who shushes others so you can hear your cell phone better. Can you spell M*O*R*O*N? And you brought your printer too? How long did you plan on staying for a measley $3. To provide free WIFI was meant as a service, I don't think the owner of any coffee shop wants to pay your office rent. Just get a coffee to go and sit in your car with the laptop pointed toward the coffee shop to sponge off the free WIFI. Oh, that's right, then you would have to feed the parking meter.

I understand that coffee houses need to make money. But if someone is running a coffeehouse here in Santa Cruz then they need to figure in that they are in a college town and college students don't have a ton of money and colege students need places to study. So it is "Welcome Students To Our Coffeehouse - But please don't do what you mainly do in coffee houses - study."

I want to be in a place that I will support and buy coffee and bagels from or whatever they have, but feel that they want my business but also care that I am just a student and understand that I am a student.

Rent and bills and labor are also a ton of money. I went to the bank and said, "please care that my customers are just students, and because they don't have a ton of money, they don't think they owe me for my services. Will you please pay my bills anyway"?

They said, "no". Actually they told me to **** off, but i'm paraphrasing for the soft environment of Topix.

I don't know what to do now. Please advise.

this isn't about free electricity this is about people who come to his business and act like it's a library or study hall with some of them having the nerve to ask others to be quiet. The owner wants his cafe to revert to what it was originally....a coffeehouse that people can communicate with others as opposed to machines. All he is doing is taking the means away from people who want to craft his business to their purpose and I applaud him for that. In fact he might even see an uptick in business client wise because of it.
hilarious. and I'm sure the guy wants to moderate people the way people communicate, also. Go figure.

I patronize the establishments that provide a servants heart to the customers. Good product, good service. I return regardless whether I ever use the Internet.

Lulu's is a bit of a control freak it seems, pays less than living wage, while financing some fancy vintage vehicle that's a money pit.

Not something me or my family can endorse here .. but hey, thank God for the competition !

I've heard several local 'free internet' coffee shops have gotten threatening cease-and-desist letters from the RIAA/MPAA because someone was downloading bootleg music or movies using the free wireless. The way the laws are written, an internet provider is supposed to have records of who was using what address when, and is personally liable if they don't. this, more than anything else, is going to kill free wireless.
oh gee who has the time?

cruzio seems to be monitoring people's Internet activity which seems to infringe against a right to privacy.

Nonetheless some bored baristas here local must certainly find entertainment from what they observe ..

I met a friend at the Abbey (a suspiciously secular looking church coffeehouse, I thought) recently also, and nearly tripped on all the power cords streaming across the floor, although the place was gorgeous, and we had no trouble finding a very comfy seat.
Did that Lulu's owner cleverly turn the tables on everyone? He's been doing this long enough and pretty successfully at that. lt wouldn't surprise me.
Interesting you should mention the Abbey - a non profit in direct competition with private businesses. The franchise pays no rent, no property taxes, no city parking tax, essentially little to no overhead.

Quite the unfair advantage.

Real pretty inside though. If I were the competition, I'd wanna sue.

But oh - claims to be a Christ- centered enterprise - so great place to direct homeless people to camp out all day!

props to standing up for what you want in your business and telling people. The customer isn't always "right" as the saying goes. That's how he wants to run it, if you don't like it, go somewhere else, plain and simple.
You bet I will go somewhere else. The pretentiousness and pomposity of both the Lulu's locations and Manthri the tyrant make them very unfriendly locations. I would be happy to see him cut down to size. You can be a rude jerk in the good times, but his actions during a recession show he is not nearly as smart as he fancies himself.

You know folks, surfing gets pretty competative here .. and all this dissy delivery brand of service may be part and partial in keeping SC real tiny, alienate clientele, drive people outta town so ultimately, get all that beach surf to themselves..

If I was Manthri, I would have pulled the plug on all those laptop users years ago.

What I don't understand is why it took him so long to address the problem.

I think I'll have to go there now, thus enabling me to actually enjoy the experience of being there.

What a concept.

I saw some guy go into Lulu Carpenters with a freaking manual typewriter from the nineteen-forties sitting at one of the round tables banging away at the keys & hitting the return tab. He had a big grin on his face. Maybe he was working on his resume? The cacophony of metal machinery whirling away was audibly very different to the usual pc/mac droids staring like empty eyed dumb deer into the black holed abyss of their laptop screens.

"The lights are on but nobody's home".

I think Manthri should in addition, line the walls with lead so no 3g networks can get through. That would be pretty cool.

I went to Lulu's tonight and it was extremely busy. It was loud and cheerful. I haven't seen it like that in years. There were no laptops in sight, but still nowhere to sit. Sigh.

The Moon enters your fourth house of home and family today, urging you to spend more time with your loved ones. There may be trouble brewing at home, so head it off at the pass before tomorrow, when conditions are right for a blowout. Take the time to really listen to what the people you live with are saying. If you live by yourself, you might want to water your plants and talk to them for a while; they miss you.
