Recycling refund will hike beer price

Full story: www.news.com.au

Manufacturers say they will add 14c to the price of a beer if Australia introduces a 10c per can paid recycling scheme. An Australia-wide 10c rebate on used bottles and cans could be announced as soon as next week, when the National Environment Protection Council will meet to discuss the Rudd government's container deposit scheme. But drinks giants Coca-Cola, Foster's Group and Lion Nathan have revealed they will pass any costs on to consumers if the plan is approved. Foster's spokesman Troy Hey said the company would increase the price of popular products such as Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught. "Take your stubbies and put 14c on top of the price of every one," Mr Hey said. "Add that to a slab, and you're talking about $3.30 more. "If that was going to lead to a fantastic increase in recycling, it might be all right. "But it won't, because the average person isn't going to drive their stubbies down to a collection point to get 10c back."

it has worked successfully in SA for over 30 years and I remember it being introduced to get rubbish off of the hyways and foot paths
hey
and it sure as shit works with 70% of all drink containers in SA taken to recyling dept

I am constantly disgusted at the massive amount of street rubbish when I go interstate.

As a young boy I lived in Port Noarlunga ,and you had to be quick to pick up that 5 cents on the ground..slim pickings in them days.
Sounds like not much has changed.

You might find metal recyclers in Victoria at least wouldn't be too crash-hot on the idea either.

Like you said, as soon as I cross the border into South Aus I notice the difference, smaller towns like Naracoorte have a cleaner look about them. An eye-opener for rubbish in Victoria is on the roadside between Ouyen and Mildura.

you were a lucky little bobby then
great part of Adelaide you lived in
right now the Blue Swimmer crabs are running off the end of the jetty

we increased the 5 cents to 10 cents a few months ago and the bonus to kids sporting clubs scouts etc fundraising has been huge. Sure some people can';t be bothered to drive to the depot so they take them to fundraising bottle drives.
It also saves local councils money in rubbish and street cleaning.
it is all win win
This is about the best news I have heard all week.
because
I am yet to hear one person here say it does not work.

Quote from above article "But it won't, because the average person isn't going to drive their stubbies down to a collection point to get 10c back."

Duh. But fill a council bin with crushed cans and it'd make it worthwhile.

I am sure the Govt will pay for it out of beer tax...it would be the right thing to do.

Daily Horoscope for December 23

Libra

Someone is shooting from the hip today, making them irascible and all too liable to fly off the handle. Be very wary about provoking them into further outbursts, particularly where the vexed topics of money and sex are concerned. If you're trying to sort out a financial problem you will also be prone to losing your rag and banging your fist on the table. But will that help?
