Way to go Tom! I am gald that the community is getting some exposure. If anyone reading this is interested in home brewing you can look into some of the local clubs. Clarksville Carboys (www.clarksvillecarboys.com ) is the Clarksville, TN home brewing club and Music City Brewers (www.musiccitybrewers.com ) is the Nashville club.

Cheers!

I don't know why you talk about the savings, there is more about it than walking into some Homebrew shop and buying all the material needed. What if the yeast doesn't start fermmenting or anything else?
THAN, you wasted $100 my friend.
Cheers

Well, Fred, that's not exactly how it works. Yeast always starts fermenting unless you kill it. If you accidentally kill the yeast, then you throw another $2 pack of fresh yeast in there. Ingredients are only about $20 to $30 per batch. The equipment is re-usable over and over and over.

The story focused on the savings, because of the economy and currently people looking for ways to cut back on spending, and certainly making beer for 40 cents a bottle is a savings (homemade wine runs about $2 a bottle, incidently).

But, the savings is not the best reason to pursue home brewing. Beer has a rich history and the beer styles of the world number easily in the hundreds. The lure for most people is the ability to make all of the beers from around the world and throughout history. To craft something wonderful that you can't just pick up at the EZ-Mart. And the pride of sharing something with friends that you made yourself (and their look of disbelief that you actually made it).
It's also an incredibly easy hobby, if you can boil water, you are already half way to your first batch. I encourage anyone who has an interest in hobbies and a taste for Beers with flavor to give it a shot.

Cheers
Tom

I completely agree with Tom. At first home brewing may seem like a large investment, but after you create a great product you realize it is well worth it. This is what home brewers mean by the equipment pays for itself in the very first batch.

Home brewing also opens you up to many other styles of beer that you may not have tried before. Most people that I talk to are surprised when they find out that their charished Bud and Miller are lager beers. They are even more surprised when they find out that their beer has roots in German Pils and Checz Pilsners.

Home brewing for me was never about saving money (though my last 5 gal batch of English Mild cost out at $0.19 a bottle). It is an experience, a journey of self discovery and a history lesson.

100 bucks? Dude I make 20 gallons with that much. I do get a Little exotic but you should go to a brew club. They will be more than happy to show you ho to make great beer for under 25 cents a bottle. I use 22 once bottles too.

I have been brewing for about a year. As I brew each batch, they get better and better. I probably have $300 wrapped up in my brewing equipment and another $250 in my keg fridge. I can brew a batch of beer for about $25. This does not include the water and propane needed. As for savings, I don't think there is a huge savings. I do it for the fun and I can make any beer I want. Brew sessions are usually good for having a few beers with friends as well.

Is the lil ole wine maker shoppe still open in Chattanooga? I started back in the early 80s making beer and wine. Great hobby and the taste is better than over the counter by far. Rock on with a kit and you will not be disappointed!

I don't think that the Lil Ole Wine Maker's Shoppe is open anymore. I think that he had to close due to health reasons. If there are any Clarksville brewers out there you should check out our website www.clarksvillecarboys.com .

Cheers!

I hate that he closed. Evans was a grand, jolley ole man who had fun with customers and wine making.
