Esterlina, a rare black-owned winery, feels like home

Full story: Santa Cruz Sentinel

Sometimes wine tastes a bit richer when you know who's making it. The Sterling family has been making wine under the Esterlina label, which is their name in Spanish, for more than a decade now, but their love of the land dates back decades.

I wonder what the percentage of white owned soul food restaurants is? Would the food taste sweeter to white folks. Stupid article, wine is wine for good or bad, not who makes it.

When I saw the article, I thought it might tell us about a winery in the Santa Cruz area. Silly me. Philo is a bit out of the way for the Sentinel and most of its readers. But I suppose I'll keep Esterlina in mind for the next time I'm in the Anderson Valley. That would also give me a chance to pay a long overdue visit to Anderson Valley Brewing Company, home of Boont Ale, Hop Ottin' IPA and several other fine beers that I see for sale at Shoppers' Corner.

Ahh ... I just saw the other article about wine touring in Mendocino. Now the point of this article becomes clear. The Russian River / Anderson Valley area is an excellent place to go wine-touring, but it is a little remote from here. We get that far north maybe once or twice in a decade, but we enjoy the Paso Robles "wine road" maybe every two or three years.

It,s only when you,re Afrian American in the wine business, will the Pompous wine crowd become glaring. Add a dose of institutional suttle liberal racism to the fake "avant garde" attitude of the wine crowd, its a sight to see. Either way, nothing beats a blind taste.

Wonderful reading about this black-owned winery. Will definitely plan to visit. Unfortunate that it is not local (Santa Cruz county). However, the article is timely, informative, and bears encouraging news. Thanks for the exploration. More like this!

the minute you attribute race to an issue it becomes a de facto racist issue....loose the race card and just tell the story...I realize that is a difficult issue for the senile...

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Gemini

You'll need every ounce of patience today because even the best-laid plans could go up in smoke under the Full Moon lunar eclipse. It seems that certain people are doing their best to throw spanners in the works, and the more annoyed you become the more they'll goad you still further. If there's dissent in the ranks about how to spend New Year's Eve, you may decide to go your own sweet way and prove that you're an individual in your own right. But try not to let any bad feelings mar the celebrations. Have a fantastic night!
