Young people bailing out on Catholic Church

Full story: Detroit Free Press

For some, the numbers are sobering. Catholics in the U.S. have experienced the greatest percentage point loss of members of any major faith or denomination, according to a 2008 study by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

It's hard to tell kids things that 5 seconds of googling can totally invalidate.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

In fact any miracle or faith tenet can be challenged online, whereas previous venues were always controlled by autocrats preaching their ancient sermons. If someone had doubt, it was seldom shared, and typically silenced with prescribed prayers or shunning.

That's all gone! Thank God!

Science has not concluded that God did NOT create the heavens and the earth.

Show me a link proving the origins of the earth are not due to God creating it.

Science can lead more towards proof than God can.

It's called "faith" for a reason. You apply your faith in something which you have no idea of it's existence. At least science truly exist and can truly be proven.

Maybe "God did that too!" and "God created Himself.... out of God!"

Don't wonder why young people are leaving.

Could it be that all this arguing and bickering that is posing as religion could be driving them away??

The Catholic Church can do a better job of explaining the faith...and it will.

There is also no reason why Mass should be a "boring" affair. This is the result of a lack of understanding caused by a lack of proper teaching. Add to that a corrosive culture of death...there is no surprise that young people are not on fire for the Church in some locales.

Smaller numbers are not necessarily a bad thing.

There is also hope for a stronger Church. A hundred pious, devoted, energized and loving Catholic believers make a much more powerful statement than do a million lukewarm ones. In fact, it is the lukewarm faithul who do the most damage to The Church.

This is nothing new. There are cycles in all things. The Church is the repository of the Truth and will always be in position to attract the mature and faithful Christian into its ranks.

To say that God does not exist is foolish and cannot be proven. We who have faith in an omnipotent, immeasureable and timeless God who has no beginning or end should not and certainly CANNOT BE at odds with ANY authentic scientific discovery. The more discovery the better. The ultimate truths which are uncovered will and must inevitably point back to God the Creator.

The Catholic Church is a faith which is in harmony with the scienctific method and with reason. As has been stated many times..."faith without reason is merely superstition."

The Church is, Thank God, eternal....and is a gift from Our Lord. It will be here long after the hateful have departed us.

You claimed that the internet disproves "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

I asked you for a link backing your claim, and expected said link to prove that God did not create the heavens and the earth.

Your link did not do that, therefore your link did not DISPROVE that God created the heavens and the earth.

Care to try again?

Excellent post!

Truth is not reduced to that which man can perceive. How arrogant of man to believe that!

When you say "priest", given the theme of this forum, I am assuming you are speaking of Roman Catholic priests.

Actually, no, the Catholic Church is uncharacteristically equivocal on the subject of creationism.

We are not required to accept the Old Testament literally.

Catholics are permitted to believe in the literal story of the creation or not, as long as it's within the context of God doing the creating.

FoS seems to be having trouble showing a link which *proves* God did NOT create the heavens and the earth.

Oh please. That is BASIC information which some segments of society seem to have forgotten.

If you call pointing that out to be arrogant, oh well.

It stems more from the self-righteous hypocrisy from religious sectors.

the church may or may not be your thing.

Still, many of todays youth will quickly tell you that they are 'spiritual'- which, of course, doesnt mean squat. And it conveniently gets them off the hook when it comes time to volunteer their time for any cause or, give money to charity.

It is like my idiot neighbors that have every feel good, faux hippy bumper sticker you can imagine - and then keep there house an environmental mess.
