Tennessee has a lot to offer. The view of the Smokey mountains is breathtaking in the fall and you have Gatlinberg, Nashville, Elvis and Memphis etc... I am curious what part of Detroit did you live in? I too remember Boblo Island and the boats. J.L. Hudsons and the parade on Woodward ave. Drive in theaters, cruising Telegraph and Woodward.

Boblo...gone Hudsons...gone Santa...they mugged him then shot him in a drive by. These things you talk about went away much further back than 9 years ago. In fact the late 60's was the beginning of the end for this city and its traditions. Year after year they kept coleman the racist crook in office, who chased away all incoming money sources but increased the output of funds & corruption. You can only stick your hands in the cookie jar for so long, until all you have is crumbs. This city is a shit hole, the majority of the residents there are slugs or thugs who add nothing back to it, and provide nothing in the way of community, civility or togetherness! This city has made their bed, and is now a dead shell of a garbage hole! Pathetic but true!

I have some fond memories and I hang on to them just for "memory sake" and to share childhood memories with my kids. It is sad that things like Boblo, Hudsons, Edgewater park and such things are gone. In this world things like this are impossible and out of the question. Coleman A. Young was a crook and a racist and is probably rotting in hell as he should. Detroit will never be the same as it was and it is a shame. People that live there seem to have no pride.~peace friend

Dell, you again are right on the mark! I moved to the Detroit area in 1979, back when the city was only about 10 years under Young, it still had many of the nice things in place, and there were still plenty of "normal" and "regular" people who were hard working, believed in community & family, and respected authority. Since then all the great people who lived in the city, have been chased away. The residents now, do absolutely NOTHING to improve their own neighborhoods, they take take take, and when their is nothing left to take, they stand there with their hands out waiting for a free handout. When anyone challenges Detroits complete lack of ethics and morals and call things the way they really are, they are labeled a racist, bigot or some other name, in an attempt to draw attention off of themselves.

Thanks TBT. I lived there since July of 65. Even though I was only 5 years old I can remember that our neighborhood was clean and safe. Safe enough for me to walk to kindergarten about 6 blocks away by myself. The riots in 67 and then the busing of the inner city kids in 68 and Colman A. Young soon after that was the so called 3 strikes and you are out. Colman was voted in because he was black not because he had any smarts or people thought he would do "some good". He lived the high life at the hands of the people that voted for him. He betrayed his own people and they STILL voted him in again. Pure Ignorance! Today the people of Detroit are generations of welfare recipients. Momma's being paid to have kids while Daddies out spreading his seed. Can you imagine trying to establish a family tree? Impossible!

My mother's family the Fishers began leaving Detroit in the late 50s. During the first half of the 20th century made significant contributions to the growth and employment of not only Detroit but the United States. While I've never personally lived there, the potential for reinvention is still strong. If ever there was a place our government needed to crack down on corrupt freeloading people it was Detroit! Maybe the White House should send in troops just like it deals with corrupt nations like Afghanistan or Iraq. Set up there own city government, police, rebuild the infrastructure etc. Heck, they do that for other nations why not our own American city?

i feel in love with greek town, belle isle and the festivals at hart plaza about 20 years ago when i first moved to detroit. there was something just magical about the city.. i can still feel the majic in my spirit that i felt way back then. i still love detroit and wish i didn't have to leave so soon but the economy and seeing people suffer because of it gave me no choice. dorn, i love that city. im originally from california. the people are not the friendliest people; as a matter of fact, i found the suburban peoples attitudes way, way worse. detroit will always be in my heart. i can still see myself taking long walks down woodward and up jefferson and other major connected streets.. i used to love sitting by the water at hart plaza...i already know i will never experience a city like i experienced detroit. i plan to visit real soon. nothing but pure love for detroit.

oh yea, i got a couple of chances to go to boblo too!! there is much hope for detroit through the spirit and soul of the majority people who reside in the inner city. if only they would stop being apathetic. the people are different from these ones down south but they were still great people. it just something about the people of the inner city and the inner city itself...
