They can't discriminate because of your age... I'm 57.. Long hours though.... a lot of BS from managers on a regular basis. Sounds like you can pass their physical. good luck
Age isn't really a factor in the job, apart from the physical demands and need to watch yourself a little more than those young kids.

Honestly, older techs seem to get much better marks from customers on the whole. If you can work fast, well, AND have the customer on your side, you will do very well as a PT.

Hi Mel, Congrats on passing the TMTF II. When you have your PTA (Prem Tech assessment), you will also have what is called a RJP. That is a Realistic Job Preview. It is a short movie, you have probably watched on the AT&T site. The PTA is your job interview. They will more than likely ask you questions about your Customer Service skills. I had questions like "How would you handle an irate customer" and "Describe a situation in your past where you made a customer very happy" and the like. If you go to http://att.jo bs/test-guides.aspx, look for the PTA and RJP. It will and does help. Good luck

Glad to hear you got a call Phydaux. Do you know what garage you will be working out of yet?
Hey FamilyGuyTX. I FINALLY got in touch with HR and was offered a conditional job out of Frisco. I am extremely happy it is close to McKinney. I will let you know if it works out. Im still thinking about staying with my current job at Encore Wire. It doesn't pay like AT&T would, but they are a good company that has been good to me. Take care

Phydaux, congrats bro thats great you're gonna be so close to home. My garage is in Richland Hills and I start June 15th. I know what you're saying about wanting to stick with a good company, I'm leaving Time Warner Cable and they have been good to me too, my boss is awesome as well. In the end, it came down to the almost $5/hr pay raise and raise structure at AT&T, my buddy there said his last one was $.80 which is respectable, I would've got maximum $.50 at my old job if I was lucky (with good numbers).

As for the millions of postings about the prem tech position being so awful, I addressed this to one of my soon to be co-workers who used to work at my current company, and he was shocked that there was so much negativity online. He told me two things: "don't to 90% of the crap you read online" and "i bet those people would probably complain about finding a winning lotto ticket." Just some words to consider, and I am by all means not trying to claim I know how it is to work at this job yet, but that was straight from the mouth of a PT who is currently employed. He basically told me that if you are already used to the PT kind of work, which many of us trying to get the job already are (contractors, working for competitors, etc.), and you don't mind it then you might as well do it at AT&T making way more money. Just my two cents. I'll post about how orientation and training goes in the next couple months.

For anybody else trying to break into this industry, Time Warner Cable is an excellent company to work for, and is generally fairly stress-free. I recommend it, but it was just time for me to make some more $$.

Being a perm tech is a horrible job. I understand if you don't have a job, then go for it and learn all you can. But please do not leave your current job for it. The co-workers and customers are cool to work with, but management will begin their day by making you feel like a piece of crap in front of everyone for not making their unrealistic numbers or unrealistic expectations. They then turn the crew against each other by making the numbers game a competition and promoting programs like "5 star" where u get an office printed award and points to buy garage from a website. Now these kind of programs can be jep by other co-workers who give you a repeat causing conflict with the group. Then they go around like their cops pulling up on you, praying they can write you up for something petty. Not to mention all the old wiring you will have to replace that they don't give you time to do. This job really sucks due to management. This company will be dismantled by its owns level 1 and 2 pets.

It's definitely true that your manager has a ton of control over whether or not the job will be livable for you. I lucked out with my direct and his manager both being really cool, worked the field before. They know what's up, and know what a waste writeups and all that garbage are. Instead, they work to make sure other managers don't let their techs repeat us if possible, and that we roll a consistent narrative, do callbacks, and everything else in the arsenal to make sure we keep customers happy and billings unquestionable.

I'll admit, when I'm rocking a 140 average on the month, and get a real crap day like a 40% efficiency with some jeps, it really sucks when it seems like my manager goes off the deep end, even with good reason for the delays, and maybe being loaned out into a wasteland to boot. When you're doing well, your praise will mostly be silence... And when you're not, you'll know it.

Still, it's cool to play everything above board, bill the customer in an MDU for IW issues, and then be able to get their building manager to swear in front of them he'll cover the charges since it's an internal issue... Like you say, the coworkers and customers make it cool... But it's not even the managers who make it suck, it's the policies and standards that aren't focused on customer happiness.

It's almost funny when you get chewed out for taking an extra hour on a job, when that hour prevents a second truck roll/cements a happy customer, especially when your day evens out with you still way over 100% efficient. It's all short term thinking at the top, with a little union thinking only about that retirement paycheck on the other side. Techs get caught in the middle, just trying to do a good job despite it all.

But it is doable. You just have to get really good at filtering out the unnecessary details, and finding the balance between happy customer and happy manager. Especially at the beginning, don't worry about your time - but do try to figure out efficiency and dispatch efficiency RIGHT AWAY - you figure out how to nail those two, then five star is easy to hit. Ask your manager "how do I make YOU look good?" - His numbers are going to work differently, and remember: he'll have 15+ techs on his team, so he only really cares about you to the extent you can bring his numbers down. If you can't make your manager happy, ask the same of his manager - if you can make your yard or district look good somehow, do that. Managers don't pick on the guys *their* boss speaks well of.

Oh yeah, and one last thing, the thing I constantly screw up myself: even though you may find that you start to notice certain other techs, yards, or territories do really terrible work, don't talk that up a lot, and try to keep it out of your narrative. I get a lot of work outside my area, and there are certain managers who'll never return my calls anymore when I'm working their turf and need assistance. But it was kinda worth it. ;)

Physaux, you might use this offer as a negotiating tactic with Encore. They might increase your pay to keep you. Win, win! Beware- you can only pull this trick once on an employer...

I work in the Miami-Dade area, when I applied to the job I thought it would be a great move. AT&T is a well established company which puts their customers first so I thought that they must be great to their employees.... Well, I was SO WRONG. they expect so much from one when they give you so little. I bring great numbers, been a 5 star tech since I started yet any little thing you do wrong is still thrown in your face. Efficiency.... The numbers you bring in a daily basis is all the care about, it's funny though how they make you stay on a job even though after 5hrs you have to jep it and then they have the balls to tell you that you have to bring the numbers uo .if your not needed for the day you get send home as if you have no bills to pay. BS company who doesn't give a shyt about their employees. Not worth the move if I would of know it was this shity.

It's finally official, I received offer letter today.
I start in July. It must be better in CA than other parts of the country because I know plenty of people here who are doing well as Prem Techs.

Anybody know if the New Albany, Indiana shop is union or not. Wondering if the sudden 'premesis tech' listings is because of striking or people quitting?

Technorcal, I just moved last year from SoCal to Dallas and have been working as an installer for Time Warner Cable (I start tomorrow with AT&T) and the heat difference in the summer is killer here, so that obviously makes a difference in overall job satisfaction which might make up the difference that you say you're seeing out there in Cali. Other factors I'm totally ignorant to but the heat sucks here. I would've loved to have been outside all day getting paid in SoCal.

FGT, yeah this week there have been two or three job postings in different locations in SoCal. I guess it was at least a few weeks ago that I saw the TX postings. I thought that Austin might be a good location.
I was told that part of the reason for the hiring in thie West at this time was because of the amount of work that the company has been withholding during these negotiations. Apparently the floodgates will open once things are settled.
I have to say that there is some good advice found on this page shared by PTSacramento in particular. I plan to get hands-on training during the ride-a-long part of the training. I want to learn as much as I can from whomever I ride with. I'll get dirty and sweaty in exchange for learning the ropes.
I hope it goes well for you.

Note: The reason For the hiring at this time that Staffing gave me was for the Northern California area specifically. But I can see how it could apply in general. Heat? The central valley of CA becomes an oven during the summer months. There are ways of adapting to that as well.

A guy got turned away from orientation today for being 35 minutes late. Someone asked what was gonna happen to him and the lady running the show said he's gonna be terminated end of story and let it be an example for everyone. Another guy was like only 3 minutes late and she said the only reason she allowed him to stay was because she wasn't in the room when 8:00am hit to turn him away. Other guys have said this before on this forum, make sure you're not a minute late to orientation and the rest of training for that matter because they will supposedly fire you for one tardy early in the game.
