Just one more reason these idiots have no reason to be on the ROAD. It's a ROAD...made for CARS...that's why it's so WIDE...because CARS are WIDE...if it were meant for bicycles, it'd be 4 feet WIDE...get it? Do you pay vehicle taxes on your bike? No. Do you have a tag? No. Can you keep up with the minimum speed on most roads? No. Do you cause traffic to back up for MILES behind your arrogant a$$? YES.

Who said I was irresponsible cyclist? I have riden these roads for 20 plus years and have never plowed a truck or even hit a car.

How wide is you car? 4-5 feet on average How wide is a lane 8- 12 seems you could get two cars in that space. What is the minimun speed for a 35mph road? There is not one.

As to the traffic for miles. At 30 mph it takes 2minutes to cover a mile, just one. So to be back up for mile would mean that there would be a group behind a cyclist for over 4 miuntes. A mile is also 5280 feet in a mile. Miles is more than one so we have 10560 feet. The maxium allowed federal length of a tractor trailer is 65 feet. So if it were just big rig at the maxuim length, which would be very unsafe for these roads, it would be 160 or so depending on the space in between them. How many cars would that be 17' feet for a FULL SIZED CAR. Which equals 621 bumber to bumber. So your statement is just not true espically when we add the fact you probably mean more than two miles. Unless you can point point out where this actually happened.

One last point.

I know Ted. Ted made a novice mistake and cause an accident. Not unlike most 16 driver behind the wheel of a car. Unlike most 16 year old drivers Ted's life was the only one in danger. ANd for the record HIS INSURANCE paid for the TRUCK DAMAGE. There goes one of the arguements that is brought up every time a cycling article is written.

There is no reason what so ever that a bicycle can not be ridden within the law on a public road. These jerks that run lights, cut in and out of cars, ride the wrong way, and cause problems are just that, JERKS! Just like the butt head driver that changes lanes with no signal, does not yeild, honks at you when he is the one no following the law, does not come to a COMPLETE stop at a stop sign, OR back out of his parking space at mach 2 with out looking. What about the 1000s of under or noninsured motorist. I garentee there car is going to do more damage and is more likely to hurt or kill you than any bicycle.

Ladder,
I admit there are bad cyclist causing problems. When are you going to admit there are bad drivers doing the same?

Try riding the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bikes think they own the road. One will get killed one day!

IT is a senic highway that cars try to commute on. And cyclist have been killed on the parkway. SO have motorcyclist and car drivers in greater numbers. People die in their beds and bath tubes everyday. Your point was?

My point was Cyclists need to be more alert of the cars on the blue ridge. Many times when I'm on it they are 2 to 3 bikes wide and a car can not pass safely.

I agree that they should never be 3 wide. That is just foolish.

Except your point is wrong, PERIOD!

Certian people do not belong on the road car, bike, scooter, or walking. That is true. A law abiding person obeying the traffic laws on a bike should not be a problem to anyone that drive thier car in the same way. This means following the speed limit on roads like the parkway and kimberly ave or downtown's 20mph.

Truth Detector,

You can not spit out a bunch of what ever and say you are the truth detector. To be the truth detector you have to be truthful.

As soon as I read this article, I knew the rednecks would start cursing all bike riders. Newcomers to Asheville think our city is so cool and hip, but I like to remind them that most of the extra's for the movie "Deliverence" were from around here and they like to post on Topix.

But I like how they are ignoring the fact that the rider's insurance covered the truck's damage. Because usually they are spouting off about no insurance.

It's good to hear that the young man recovered and accepted responsibilty of the accident! But what could he have been thinking about while going down a twisty hilly road at 30 MPH? JUst today I encountered a bike rider coming down Bat Cave road going thru the curves at the Mcdowell-Buncombe co. line and the guy was on his cellphone! Come on folks, use your friggin heads, ride and pay attention.

Is being a fat *ss sitting behind a computer eating cheetos cool? Cyclists are some of the few remaining people in America that dont lose their breath walking up a flight of stairs or carrying in their groceries. We will still be around long after you have a heart attack.

I don't give a damn about Kimberly Avenue. I'm talking about a MAIN road where the speed limit is ABOVE 35. I don't see many cyclists going 35+, which means they are impeding the flow of traffic.
