It's remarkable that both sides choose to go court their base (surrounded by reporters) rather than talk to one another. I think the only question left to answer is how long will the government shut-down last?

Only through a protracted shut down will we be able to learn what services are truly critical to the citizens of MN. On all non-critical services, shut them down.

With a 6.2 BILLION dollar hole to fill, there should be NOT ONE program to see even a 1 dollar increase over the 2010 budget. If ANY program receives ANY increase, then IMO Dayton should be impeached!

On all non-critical services, shut them down. Absolutely agree. And hey, each day Govt is shut down you would think represents a cost save. Let's just shut'er down until the deficit is gone. If the Governor and liberals refuse to draw down unsustainable spending that accumulated during the economic bubble, well then, let'em keep the services.... for x days a year with x being the number of days we have to shut down to erase the deficit. More than one way to skin a cat. I'm sure the Governor would consider that "Bararic" (had to laugh with that characterization of cuts. Someone needs to tell him that 6 months in the middle east would probably adjust his perception of what "Barbaric" is.)

Pawlenty tried this for eight years and we wound up six billion in the hole. The old quote "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result" seems to be the Republican Mantra, all the GOP wants to do is what Pawlenty did in the past and that just did not work. Prepare for a painful recovery, this include less services and more taxes. Governor Dayton has proposed both cuts and increased revenue, that is the only route to financial stability and I fully support his actions. Only an insane person would continue down the Pawlenty GOP path of just cuts to just fail again and again. For how many years can government grow faster than the state economy which supports it?

Its time for gov. tax and spend to go next door and talk to the WI gov. He has the guts to make the cuts needed! Govt employees are protesting because they may actually have to contribute to their health care costs...what a joke. Congrats to WI. They have all the great sports teams and now a governor that will turn around their state!

Seniors and college kids liked the way he looked. The rest of us were to busy looking for work or busy working to stay employed....Maybe this guy will move here and help...The Minnesota Twins have avoided arbitration with the last of this year's eligible players, agreeing to a one-year, $5.375 million deal with Delmon Young this morning.

Gov. Dayton doesn't expect to get every thing he proposes in his budget and did in fact propose some cuts that his DFL base is very unhappy about including dropping 7,500 low income workers from MinnCare and suts to nursing home and hospital reimbursement rates. Thankfully, he has sent a clear message to Republican legislators that just as he moves and will continue to move to a resolution of this serious deficit, Republican legislators are going to have to move as well and accept some tax increases on the highest earners. There can be no resolution of this until both sides are willing to make some concessions even they enrage some elements of their political base.

It really doesn't matter what cuts are made someone will be screaming - we need to take a look at ALL the programs and see where the fat can be trimmed - I have to believe we have some pork that can go - how about the per diem for starters.
