Your article is fair and sensible and could contribute to a just solution to the suffering of the people of Cyprus.
The Cypriot people will never be free to decide their own future. It is quite obvious from the amount of time and money Turkey invested in Cyprus. Even if we take your conservative figure of 35 000 troops and Turkey’s economical support of the state unrecognized by no other country than Turkey it is quite a high expenditure. These investments were made for a purpose: the eventual cleansing of the Greek Cypriots from Cyprus. This has already been achieved by making the Turkish Cypriots a minority in the occupied part of Cyprus. Therefore, Turkey will never allow a Mr Eroglou or anyone else for that matter to put the interest of his people first. For a picture how our people feel towards each other please go to www.cycb,com.cy Program “ayni gokyuzu altinda”.

Cyprus (at least the southern half) has never really been free. Greek Cypriots have (voluntarily or otherwise) always been linked with a dominant connection from Greece. It was only the Turkish Cypriots who felt themselves to be a Cypriot entity.

Once Greece invaded Cyprus, the island was thrust into the realization that Cyprus was never really an independant state at all. The Greek Cypriots knew that all along but it might have been a shock for the Turkish Cypriots.

It could be that Greek Cypriots now understand the mistake they made by looking towards Greece for their future, but it is too late now. I doubt very much if Turkish Cypriots can ever trust "the other side" again.

If Turkish Cyprus cannot gain its' own independance then they may remain a part of Turkey forever, but I don't think that the island can succeed to reunite - Greek and Turk. And why should it? I think the Turks of Cyprus have had enough of being considered "second-class citizens" to the Greeks.

I agree. I would like to see Turkish Cyprus become indepedant and enjoy the status it once had but I would not like to see it reunited with the Greek part. Both Turks and Turkish Cypriots are very fine people. I hope the very best for them.

I've been mulling over this for quite a while, I've always hoped that a solution in which both communities could live in one state was possible. but unfortunately, in conversations with Cypriots and other interested parties, I now realise that I no longer believe that it is. not now not in the near future. I've decided to post this for discussion. it's a plan for 'Two-states, one island', in which there would be an official separation of the two states, with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus area gaining full sovereignty and international recognition. and Greek republic of southern Cyprus,
I have a feeling it is the only way we will ever get to see a, if we can call it a united Cyprus,

I agree with you 100%. There are two people - two cultures. It is not an unacceptable thing to think they they might prosper better seperatley if one side (I dare not say which!) considers itself "master race" over the other.

The U.S. CIA hatched a plan to have Greece invade Cyprus with an eye to building American military bases on the northern half (Turkish Cyprus) of the island once the Greeks succeeded in occupying the whole of Cyprus. British soldiers were shot in the front and met head on, etc. I was there in the mid-80's and was inspired by the hospitality of the Turkish soldiers and Turkish Cypriot citizens. I liked the island and although the Greeks were ok it was the Turks that inpressed me the most in a possitive manner. My uncle was not killed in Gallipoli, attacking turkey (which has absolutely nothing to do with Cyprus anyway) but my ex father-in-law was a UN soldier on Cyprus during the crisis, and his experience was similar to mine. It is a lovely island and good for holidays.

yes I served in the united nations force in 1977,and in 1960 met a turkish cypriot policeman who I sat and drank coffee with.was serving in the cyprus police force this was nicosia, after the first world war when he turks were driven out of the middle east the british army took over from the turks and power went to britain, which meant control of palestine and cyprus was in the hands of england,so gallipoli was to do with cyprus as it weakened the turks who did not make the mistake of helping the grmans the second time in the second world war where some countries went neutral, and ddnot fight the nazis.

Cowardly Nations like Sweden & Turkey kept out of WW2.

Greeks & Greek Cypriots fought against the Nazis to help free Europe.

GCs in particular were promised there Freedom from Evil British Colonial Rule if they fought on Britains side. Former President Clerides was a Fighter Pilot during the Battle of Britain!

However British stabbed GCs in the back when they refused to grant GC wish for Union with Greece in 1950s (82% of Cyprus population was Greek).

British inspired Turkey to get involved to keep Cyprus British.

All British Servicemen who died in the Conflict were Occupiers. So dont blame the GCs.

Sooner or Later Cyprus will be free of the scourge of the British & the Turks. Britain has no right to keep these Basis after its continual betrayal of Greek Cypriots & its Evil Divide & Rule Policy.

I DEMAND THAT THE BRITISH REPLACE ALL THEIR GREEK STYLE NEO-CLASSICAL BUILDINGS (BANK OF ENGLAND, ETC) AND REPLACE THEM WITH TURKISH STYLE BUILDINGS.

You do not deserve any Hellenic Connections.

Mr TRK you are plainly wrong, as Mr Blackadder and Mrs News will confirm. Best you read back on some posts before you comment again, you wouldn't want to look stupid would you?
