The town was known as Smartsville from 1856 to about 1909 when the US Board of Geographic Names decided to change the spelling. Since 1909, the post office, maps and road signs identified the town as Smartville, but local residents have always used the original, historic spelling with the additional "s."
Finally, after nearly 100 years of confusion and consternation, the Board of Geographic Names may consent to restore the original name of this historic gold rush community. All local organizations are encouraged to write to the US Board to support this proposed name restoration. |

Im giving serious consideration to relocating to the Western Nevada County or the Eastern Yuba county area. I would welcome any thoughts or suggestions.
