I was living in Michigan when the ballot measure passed. Representative Byrnes is courageous for introducing this, but I think it's going to be a REAL hard sell. Michiganders are, for the most part, pretty well caught up in their bibles IMHO. They passed a measure by almost sixty percent that also harmed straight couples in the state by dissallowing domestic partnerships or any other formal legal contract establishing a union between two unmarried people.
I lived in Michigan WAAAAAY too long. |

So long as Republican Mike Bishop remains the Senate Majority Leader, this will probably not even be brought to a vote in that chamber.
Even if the unthinkable happened and this were to miraculously pass both houses, I think it's highly unlikely that voters would pass a repeal of the amendment. The best we could hope for is a modification that reserves marriage to opposite-sex couples but removes the ban on civil unions/domestic partnerships. And I think even that is not likely to pass, thanks to the ability of the Roman Catholic Church to spend millions of dollars campaigning against it, and the strong influence of calvinist churches on the west side of the state. So hold the celebrations, and don't hold your breath. |

1 This isn't about equal rights. Gays and lesbians have equal rights. This is about two groups that have fundamentally different views of marriage. It would be nice to discuss the implications of each view before we decide to dispense with marriage altogether.(And that's exactly what will happen in twenty years if gay marriage is permitted. |

That's silly. Are straight people so weak and foolish as to decide never to form legally recognized families just because gay couples are now allowed to? That makes straight folks pretty stupid, if you ask me. And since when is being able to form a legally recognized family NOT a civil right? It's one of the most basic rights there is. |

1 Equal? Um no... Civil marriage is different than Religious marriage. I think you might be thinking of religious marriages than civil ones. I believe LGBTQ community want the civil marriage more so than the religious aspect of it. |
