“Them animal rights people, they might have a good idea, but more people starve in Africa everyday than what they're killing in horses, and nobody's worrying about that”
Roy Baker is not a popular man, but he's a prosperous one. Baker is the owner of the Sugarcreek Livestock Auction in Tuscarawas County, which is one of the major horse auction venues in the United States. via Mount Vernon News

i think that these animal rights activists need to stop and think about what they are saying iam 20 yrs old and have farmed cattle and horses all my life and some horses that are at the sales are ones that are old broken down or just plan crazy and some people cant even afford them hint the cost of living being so high what is their solution to do with all the horses. Do they want them dropped off in their front yard? Do they want them to strave and die a slow miserable death cause people can't afford to feed them

I believe it all comes down to the ethics of horse people. When I buy a horse, it is for life. How many people would send their dog or cat to auction, for a slow torturous trip to slaughter? No, the public puts these creatures to sleep when their lives are ready to end. Between TB race tracks, and the thousands of horses that get cast off every year, and to our nation's pride in the wild mustang, it is time to claim responsibilty. Humane euthanasia is available people, when the time comes. Let's start being responsible for the animals we own. There is a HUGE difference between a horse and a cow. And yes, I have farmed both species over the course of my life. I do know the difference.

A question to readers. Does anyone out there remember a TB mare by the name of Midnight, possible auctioned off at Sugarcreek sometime in the past. She was injured in her pelvis and back, and I am researching her past as far back as I can, but am at a standstill. She was rescued by my family in April of this year, from a livery in Loudonville. Her registered name is Larry's Lassie, and she originated in the Finger Lakes area of New York. Thank you.

DEAR RODNEY, HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO THE SUGARCREEK AUCTION? I SUGGEST YOU GO SOME TIME AND SEE IF IT IS BETTER FOR THE HORSES THAN STARVING TO DEATH. HORSES CAN LIVE ON GRASS IF THEY HAVE IT AVAILABLE TO EAT. WE RESCUED A MARE AND A COLT ON FRIDAY. THE COLT HAD DONE NOTHING WRONG EXCEPT BEING BORN, THE MARE WAS STANDING IN A POOL OF BLOOD AND WAS ONLY AROUND 500 LBS.THEY ALL HAVE A SOUL, AND WE WILL ANSWER ONE DAY FOR WHAT WE DO TO THEM. GO TO SUGARCREEK AND SEE AND HEAR THE SOUNDS OF THE HORSES BEING LOADED IN THE SEMI'S, SEE IF YOU CAN GET THE SCREAMS AND BANGING OUT OF YOUR HEAD, I KNOW WE WON'T FOR A LONG TIME IF EVER.

Horses have souls. Interesting. Did they tell you that.
|

Interesting-did they tell you that they don't have souls? |

I have to agree with Carol. I have seen mare's cry tears over stillborn foals. I have been awoken from sound sleeps at night by thoughts of my horse and gone outside to find her down with colic, and I have been led by fate to intervene in their times of need-such as just before they headed to Sugarcreek. How can God give us such a majestic creature that can feel pain, provide humor and comfort to us and not extend them a soul? They cannot talk in a form we humble human's can understand. But, they somehow, through all the torture we put upon them, have found a way to grant us flight without wings... How could you think they do not have a soul? In all honesty, if you have owned a horse in your life, and didn't see their soul everytime you went for a ride, took care of them, or parted ways on their trip to a better world, then I feel sorry for you. I really do. You are missing one of the magical parts of life.

I don't know, why don't we ask when we all end up where we are going in the end? Good luck in life. |

I know this was written last year, but I had to write.
Seems to me that hmmmmm has never been to Sugarcreek and has never been around horses. Any horse lover knows that each horse has a soul and does not deserve to go to slaughter. They give us the best times of our lives. Life without horses? I DON'T THINK SO. And lastly to hmmmmmm, horses have WAY more soul than you do or will ever hope to. |
