Future of Memphis Strip Clubs Uncertain After Supreme Court Ruling

Full story: WPTY

The U.S. Supreme Court may have put many Memphis strip clubs out of business. On Monday, October 4, 2010, the High Court declined to hear club owners' appeal of a new Shelby County ordinance that forbids alcohol and lap dances at adult establishments.

You got that right. The whole point in going to a stripclub is to have a few beers and try to relax and enjoy the eye candy and maybe get a lapdance. But if you can't drink or touch a girl in these clubs anymore then the only reason to go is to just sit there with your cola and watch the girls and wonder what her tats feel like. If you like to actually just watch someone dance then i guess it's still all good. Me personally, i've never really had the money to ever go to a stripclub and participate in the activities that would make it worthwhile to go to a stripclub but i just thought i would give my simple opinion on the subject.

I don't go nearly as much as I used to back in my early 20's, and for some of the same reasons you said. Now the "hands off" thing I can begrudgingly live with, I do know that a lot of other clubs around the country have similar policies. But no alcohol? What is this, Chuck E Cheese? C'mon... yes he is being a prude. "Girls come from all around because they know how loose the rules are?" They're just coming for the money, strippers here go out of town to work sometimes too, it's just the nature of the business. If you don't like what goes on in the clubs, then don't go, but don't ruin it for everyone else. Yeah I know shady stuff goes on in some of them sometimes, but hey this won't stop it...well yes it will when they all shut down.

Memphis has more issues than trying to regulate Strip Clubs !

if you don't like what goes on in clubs, then simply don't walk through the door of them

I don't go to them, but so what ??

this ruling is just a bump in the road ! it's like thinking you're going to stop all forms of prostitution...are you kidding me ??

how dumb can Memphis get ??(er, scratch that, Memphis is sucky anyway..lol)

I have been dancing in Memphis for 7 years.. I know the scene and I know the people. There are at least 500 people employed at these clubs and in a time of high unemployment, DESTROYING jobs kinda seems like a step in the wrong direction.. Not to mention the obvious discrimination against us! Taking away alcohol and lap dances is a Sugar coated way of shutting us down, it's just looks less discriminating. If Youre going to Treat us this way then ENJOY supporting us when we can't find other jobs

In my 60 some years of life I've been to three such clubs, in Chicago, St. Louis & Memphis. So far I haven't seen anything I'd want to touch. Wrong clubs, huh?

If you don't like the strip clubs.. Don't go.. Don't put people out of work and stop tourism just because of your puritan beliefs.. I know a few people that work in the clubs and they are no different fro you or me.. They need the jobs and it is good pay. Memphis is full of idiots.

With only a couple of weeks left before the new rules take effect, I was wondering how many dancers have begun the process of getting licensed.

Our company would have the yearly conference in Memphis mainly because of Platinum Plus. It was a class place. Now you have certain people telling you what you should do and not do for entertainment.

I read a post on another web site that said the girls he talked to at Gold Club yesterday told him they did not believe anything was going to change after the New Year. If this is the case I doubt if any of the clubs have begun the process of getting licensed. I will be surprised if they are not raided very early in 2012 and closed until they go to court, or until they comply.

I read on another site that at Midnight all the clubs became "bikini bars", and that this should make them not under the new rules. I would like to hear from anyone that was there last night, or from a dancer if it's true.

Clubs become Bikini Bars with no alcohol being served, stupid arse Memphis politics. Eventually you'll have to go outside and smoke.

according to what I read they are not losing alcohol. The change to bikini bar means the new rules don't apply to them. They can't show boobs on stage, but time will tell how good the dances will be.

I just read a post from one who was there on new years eve. At 10 pm they called all the girls back to dressing room. at midnight they came back out wearing t-shirts and boy shorts and went on no boobs showing and beer still flowing at 2am. still touching in table dances but fully clothed. His feeling was any girl who is good enough to travel will be moving on now.

I have heard that the clubs now have signs up inside informing customers they are no longer "adult oriented businesses." I just don't see how they are going to survive the change, being in the area's they are located. If I wanted a hooters I can go to one much closer to my house, and I don;t have to pay 40 dollars for a dance.
