Editorial: Governor's got a fight on his hands

If Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's slash-and-burn budget proposal truly is a ploy to get our attention, then we congratulate him.

Mission accomplished. But if Schwarzenegger is seriously advocating for such devastating cuts to our schools, our parks, our safety net for the sick, low-income and elderly, he'd better prepare for a fight.

Californians aren't going to stand by while their education system, their social services and their beloved parks -- including seven in San Luis Obispo County--are gutted. Read more

This budget crisis was so predictable its pathetic. Perhaps if Arnold and the Green's in Sacramento spent more time on what is really important (provide basic services)rather than worrying about global warming some of the pain could have been avoided. AND, if you think there are $50 billion recurring loopholes in this state's tax structure you are really drinking the kool aid.

There is so much astronomical waste in this state. I sent my son to public schools until I realized how terrible they are. It IS NOT the teachers. I'm sick of the labels HATE, FASCIST, RIGHT WING and others when one rightly criticizes the entirely corrupt teachers unions and the entirely corrupt administrators of public education. To correctly criticize these entities DOES NOT mean one hates teachers. These are the entities that should have their budgets slashed NOT the teachers. I am so sick of seeing five people leaning on shovels at a Cal Trans work site. They do great work but they also have entirely corrupt unions who drive up the cost of maintaining our roads and highways. These two areas alone waste enough money to fix California's budget woes. Do I have any hope a politician will directly address these particular issues? NO.
