Why are these young healthy people getting this free stuff? I am a disabled vet living in a house with a leaking roof, an out-dated and overflowing septic system in my carport of all places, out dated wiring, plumbing, and mold and mildew all over the house due to flooding and the leaking roof. My decks are falling apart and rotting. Run off from heavy rains flood my house at least once a year and my water stinks most of the time. It's not great or healthy but it's all I have and I live with it and right now I am happy to have this much. I could be living in a cardboard box.

I'm sure the people involved came from a good home.

Old Marine.. it is not only "young, healthy" people that receive habitat homes.. and they are NOT free! Every habitat owner MUST pay mortgage, insurance, and taxes on the property. This is made affordable through a zero-interest loan provided by Habitat. Each family must work a set amount of 'sweat equity' or volunteer hours on their home.. They have to help build their home and other homes. They are many qualifications that must be met to qualify for a Habitat home.

If your home is in that kind of disrepair, see if you have a local Habitat in your area. They can either help you in applying for a habitat home or help you repair your current home. Habitat does not discriminate and chooses their homeowners based on need and their ability to partner. Best of luck to you.
BTW, I live next door to this house and it was a total shock for something like this too happen.

I appreciate what you're saying. I can't bring myself to ask for that kind of help, it's just not in me. I'll let those who have no house at all work with the habitat people, they need it more than I do. As far as the no interest loans, not many of those around here and even if I found one I need so much work done I would just about have to tear the house down and start over. Can't really afford that on VA disability.

Old Marine,
I'm sorry that you feel that way. Habitat is there for people just like yourself. I know that it is hard to ask for help, but if it is what you need to keep yourself safe and Healthy (it sounds like your home is a health risk) then I don't see why not.. I know there is an issue of pride, believe me, I never wanted to ask for any type of help.. but when it came to the safety and wellness of my children, I would beg on the streets if I had too. If you change your mind and would like some help with the process, you can contact me at endogirl78@yahoo.com

God Bless,

You might be able to qualify for habitat to rebuild your home or fix it up being a disabled vet with limited income. I suggest you call habitat in alamogordo and have them send you an application. There are other programs in area who helps people with limited income fix there homes even if it's just to weatherize it. I would check into it if i was you. Lots of good programs out there.

This was purely immature and so destructive to the community at large. This a signal for the residents to get to know one another, be good-neighbors, and have a monthly meeting to discuss how their efforts are effective lowering crime...

This is my home that they are talking about and I appreciate everyones comments. Yes it was immature and distructive. We are now living in the house and are very happy. We have started a neighborhood watch and all want to take care of our friends and neighbors. Again, thank you for your comments!
