A problem that seems to not be getting discussed is the parents of the bully .... there needs to be more, much more awareness by the parent as to what their child is doing. Is the bully also being ignored and bullied at home .... are they learned practices that they are acting out on? Too many parents are overlooking what their children do now adays. When parents aren't paying attention, the bullying turns into violence and we see it on the news. Parents need to take charge again - instead of ignoring their children. Lead them and guide them - not ignore them.

Seeing the story on the news this morning about the three students who have dropped out of school because the teacher is the bully according to the mother who called in. If this is true than it is deplorable that a teacher would use their position to push children around. However, 3 students? I would have to wonder if there isn't more to this story and a misjudgement as to the teaching methods by a parent and students who don't understand the teachers methods. Although it is hard to believe, there are students out there who don't really take their education seriously and do everthing they can to disrupt the learning process for themselves and others. There are also parents out there that tend to balme the teachers for the failure of their children to to act as they should in a school environment.
I am a teacher in Pasco County and it is easy to see how this mother's comments automatically take people to the side of the picked on children, alot more information is needed before a teacher is accused of bullying. There are parents who thank their children can do no wrong and see a whole different side of their child than the teachers see at school.(Not every child but there are more than you would think.

Are they anger issues that could be addressed if the parents weren't so angry - and paid more attention. They learn by example.

My comment is for all the concerned parents and students here. Bullying in school that is not affectively handled now, leads to anxiety. I personally dealt with bullying all throughout middle school, by the time I was in high school I dealt with seperation anxiety. I attended school everyday seperating myself from any type of conversation with the teacher's, students and/or my parents until I finally dropped out. I became very angry with the school, teachers and my mom. What most parent don't realize is that once you attempt to confront the bully initiator, they have friends that also become involved in the activity of making your life unbearable. Association brings on participation. My main concern is to make you aware that those bullys one day are our supervisors and/or co-workers. We get into the work place and the bullying continues, its just a change of scenery. Once you make comments in the work place about one persons comments (bullying) their friends begin to bully you as well. In the workplace environments, too many complaints about your co-workers makes YOU the problem. I encourage parents to get heavily involved in your childs ordeal. I can personally say if you don't it will affect them for the rest of their life. Go to the school, talk to the principal, the teachers, then write them reinterating your discussion, write the school board, don't allow any one to push your childs concern under the rug, and/or push the problem back on your child this seems to be the easiet solution.

I was bullied when in school back in the seventies and it seems to have gotten worse. I think that bullies should only get one chance and then be put permanently out of school. First offenses should immediately remove them from any sports or extra activities that they might be involved in. Second offense they should be expelled. I also think that the school board should start a punishing program that involves the parent in the punishment, I think the parents need to start parenting again instead of letting their kids run wild.

When my youngest son was in High School in Hillsborough County he was attacked by 30 kids. They had him down on the floor of the hallway by the lockers - kicking him in the head. This came about because of some rioting that was going on in St. Pete. The school nurse happened to come down the hallway and saw it, and got help. My son was taken to the hospital - my son had NEVER been in a fight at school, and the principal did not even suspend ANY of the students involved. This was unprovoked violence - and the school did NOTHING. I have horrible pictures of him, and remember that day with such sadness. A student who liked school - suddenly was afraid every day until I changed schools for him. This was about 8 years ago - before all the computer stuff and they couldn't handle it properly even then.

When speaking about bullying or the assualt of the girl in Polk County, is it necessary to continually show that video? Don't you all think that these girls have received more attention than they deserve? Its great that you are opening up the topic of bullying, but the public doesn't need to see the video everytime bullying comes up. The video is portraying a violent criminal act, not simple bullying.

Before I retired, I saw bullies every day, reported it to guidance and basically nothing was done. Why? Because these "adorable, pretty, popular cheerleaders" came from wealthy families and were ready to file lawsuits and make everyone's life miserable for unfair treatment. I see little has changed, but it does my heart good to see JAIL and mugshots all over the TV. Don't you wish our school boards would anser with "Bring it on" when these parents threaten lawsuits?

Bullying is a society issue which has escalated since we took moral absolutes (right and wrong)out of our schools and society, removing God from schools.
Bullying takes place in elementary schools and YES, teachers, counselors and administrators are doing something about this. Parents could help by realizing their are their child's first teacher and they must discipline and teach right from wrong behavior before they arrive at school. At our school we many ways we are working on bullying;
Walk away
Ignore the bully
Talk it out, if you can
Seek help from an adult
It's called WITS. We need to teach the victim ways to handle bullying and find the "hot spots" in our school where bullying occurs.
We need the parents to help so we can teach the other important things like reading, math, social studies, health, science and writing.
Hope this helps,
Concerned teacher,mother,and "Nana"

Rosalie - here is Brad's advice for your issue with a grandchild:
Brad: First, use words. "I don't like that."
You will have to model them for a 31/2 yr old.
Also, go to the victim first, bullies hate that
Supervision is important as well to protect him from the unfair advantage that the 8 yr old has.

This was in the news today:

FORT WALTON BEACH — A 12-year-old girl was arrested for battery after she burned a boy at the W.E. Combs School, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.

Her charge is a misdemeanor. Lawmen say she used a Bic lighter on the boy’s elbow Monday. The incident was recorded on the school’s security system.

An instructor said he smelled something burning.

A female deputy searched the girl after her arrest and found the lighter wrapped in black electrical tape in her underwear.

The girl is from Niceville, according to her arrest report.

will all these involved be charged as adults and serve time. Punishment needs to start to show others this will not be tolerated. People want to blame society when the blame needs to go on the indivisual who committed the crime. Do the crime do the time..
