Now we get to dial 1 + area code to call someone in our own town. Brilliant.

No, that would be 11 digits. You won't need to dial the 1 anymore. Do you think having the area code change on your existing number would be a better option? I don't, I think this is the best option.

The 1+ before ten-digits WILL be required if the call incurs a TOLL charge. The 1+ is NOT required if the call is local, but ten-digits (i.e., the area code and then seven-digits) will be required on such local calls. Some telephone service providers MIGHT allow 1+ before ten-digit local calls to go through anyway, with no charges, but if the call is toll, you will have to dial 1+ and will be charged toll.

Also, the article has the overlay to 203 shown as 459, at least that's what the article is stating as I write this comment. It is NOT going to be 459, but 475 to overlay 203.

This is not without precedant. Mass and NY already do this.

Seems very sensible to me.

Too many people resist change, even the little ones.

And many, many, many other parts of the US and Canada as well, such as the DC suburbs in Virginia and Maryland, much of the Chicago area and northern Illinois, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, parts of Southern California, Portland OR, Toronto and much of southeast Ontario, Montreal, ALL of Alberta and British Columbia, all of Puerto Rico, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, parts of Mississippi, the Miami and Orlando areas in Florida, Denver, Salt Lake City, all of West Virginia, etc. All of these areas have overlaid area codes with ten-digit or 1+ten-digit local dialing.

The better alternative would have been a split with Fairfield County receiving the new area code and New Haven County retaining the 203 area code. This creates greater long term relief than the overlay and with the overlay there is no shortened period of exhaust, meaning some places, such as Atlanta, have four different area codes. Dump the overlay and demand the split.

Daily Horoscope for December 9

Scorpio

If something is bothering you, it's important that you say so now, loudly and clearly. It's no good bottling things up any longer because that will only lead to resentment and a slow-burning anger. However, it's important that you know when to shut up too, otherwise you might overstate your case or sound so demanding that you turn others against you.
