Kauai Council approves ban on plastic bags with 4-2 vote - Hawa...

Did you really expect anything else? Kauai is being runned by tree hugging, NIMBY, whale humping haoles.

The economic slow down got rid of the poor stinky ones, but the rich ones are still there and complaining about everything.

The plastic bag ban is good for the environment but at what cost? Are we willing to pay more at the store since the biodegradable bags cost more?

Look at the additional costs and problems the Bottle Bill, the 10% ethonal and even our renewable energy policy is costing the locals of Hawaii.

Being environmentally friendly will cost money - and that means higher cost of living in paradise.

Let's do nothing until we see how Kauai weathers this.

Education, NOT legislation by those that "know" what is good for us or else out comes the "stick!"

Has anybody noticed the outrageous prices that stores want to charge for cheaper reusable bags which don't last long before ripping?

Excellent! Now if only we could use those plastic bags to put over the heads of all the State Legislator's--this would start to be a perfect world, again..!

Duh! Mental giant, that's why you're supposed to use your own reusable bag...(..oh, good grief..) No, by the final version of the Kaua'i ordinance, "biodegradable" can have NO oil based polymer plastic content.

And: "...Kauai County's ban allows for biodegradable bags that conform to a European standard..."

The European standard is no longer a part of the final version of the Kaua'i ordinance on this. That was deleted. The new standard for "biodegradable" used in Kaua'i's ordinance is:

"...and contain no polymers derived from fossil fuels. These single-use bags must also decompose at a rate comparable to paper, leaves and food waste."

NO PLASTIC AT ALL will be allowed in Kaua'i shopping bags.

Ho, JoeLocal, you sound like you're watching things here on Kaua'i closely. What, you got nothing better to do than watch tree hugging haoles humping whales? Isn't there a ferry or something you can ride for a good entertaining roller coaster there on Oahu?

Excellent! I live on an island too, but in the pacific northwest. I've noticed over time a lot more plastic bags, bottles and even bait traps washing up on our beaches.

I'm concerned about marine life, the environment and particularly the North Pacific Garbage Gyre. I think bans on these types of items will help a lot.

I started a small scale recycling project in my area. I recycle plastic bags for 19 families now and turn them into reusable bags and purses. Together we've kept 4000 plastic bags out of our waste stream.

Keep up the good decisions and we can make a positive impact for the ecosystem.

It is about time. Bravo to the island of Kauai...now only if Los Angeles, CA would do the same. What a great article and photos!

I completely agree with Kauai on this one. I wish the rest of the country would take note and follow their lead. The huge piles of trash accumulating in several hundred mile long regions of the oceans is tragic. I'd gladly pay more if it meant I was protecting my planet.

Good for you Kauai! So glad to see you are doing your part to reduce marine debris. I left Kauai in 1994, but you will always and forever feel like home. Hopefully California will follow your lead in the near future.
