Cyrus photograph: art - or something else?

Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus has defended her controversial photograph in Vanity Fair by saying, "it was supposed to be artistic." Her Disney bosses didn't see art but manipulation, calling it a ploy to sell ...

Strange story. Did the photog Leibovitz tell Miley and her family that the pics would probably change public perception of her? Leibovitz had an obligation to convey that her pics are more sophisticated that more conventional works. Ms. Cyrus, you're only 15, you've got the rest of your life to look trampy. Enjoy your youth while it's here.

I agree wtih Billy Bob. Where the hell were the parents when the photographer ask their 15 year old daughter to take her clothes off?!

Is the parents duty to ensure that their daughter is not being manipulated not the photog.

But hey, I guess the parents saw a way to make money off their daughter. And don't most stars have an clause in contracts that give them the right to review and approve all photos to be published?!

Well...this is today's society!! Any and everything has a price!!

I hope the original Coppertone child is compensated as well. That kid had to bare their cheeks for those ads.(sarcasm mode off)

Fifteen going on 23. I hear her favorite TV show is Sex and the City.

She looks like any other redneck, soon to be un-wed mother, straight out of Glen Burnadena, Essex, Aberdeen, or Fredneck.

Kudos to VF for their stellar tramp marketing campaign!

Yes...she is only 14 but I do find it artistic. I am not certain I agree with manipulating a 14 year old..she has a manager and due to her age....someone helped her with her decision. It is NOT pornographic. I feel Disney should NOT punish her.....she did the photos with with good intentions and good taste. Do you NOT see what is out there? These mothers who think there children will never see or hear anything......are fooling themselves.
Don't be so QUICK to judge people!!

Sir..to the person making redneck comments......Baltimore certainly has their share of rednecks....and you can't assume that where her parents are from or that they saw a way to make money from her...make them rednecks!

Laying between her father's legs "looks like incest"...ugh...you must really be upset and rednecking the "hell" out of Texas Polygamist and their prophet...think their rednecks too?

It's just her Daddy Billy Ray Nobody trying to revive his dead career through his daughter's success. Billy Ray Cyrus could not even get arrested after his novelty hit Achey Breaky Heart fell off the charts so did he. Until he got a job playing her father in a minor part in her TV show what was he doing? parking cars?
As for the pose of her in his lap, it sure looks like incest.
She will probably become another Brittney Spears, drunk, high, mentally unbalanced, washed up, twice divorced with 2 kids taken from her.

I always thought that pimping out your minor aged children for money was illegal? I don't know who is a worse parent: Britney Spears or Billy Ray Cyrus.

Taken from Wikipedia--In Cyrus' career, he has released 28 charting singles, 13 of which reached the top 40

Doesn't sound like he needs to be riding the coat tails of his daughter. Especially since the whole Gary Coleman debacle about $$$, he could only legally get a small percentage of her earnings as a legit manager.

Annie Leibovitz did this for a cheap thrill. If some guy took these photos he'd be in jail. But since she's a lesbian, no one seems to care.

I just wish we weren't in such a friggin' hurry to sexualize young girls.
I have 2 daughters, 8 and 13. You can hardly find clothes that aren't trampy these days. It's ridiculous.

As we long have known, art is subjective. If this photo was an oil painting from the year 1790, we’d certainly all consider it art. It might even be up in the Louvre. Fifteen year olds back then were often married– and not considered kids anymore. There was certainly no talk of tweens and teens back then. However, today, we have impressionable faces looking up to stars like Miley for inspiration and motivation. Miley, a symbol of youth and fun, is not a sex symbol– so seeing her in this way is jarring. It just doesn’t fit.

Her fans think of her as their best friend, girl next door, and big sister they never had. The girl next door doesn’t do these things. But what added to the shock of the photo was its juxtaposition with the photo of her and her Dad. It made people feel uncomfortable and shifty. The girl is covered in a sheet in one shot and lying around on her Dad’s lap in another. If she were 2 years old, it would have been cute; at fifteen, it seems a bit creepy to many.

So is it art? If it were someone else at a different time or of Miley in about 10 years, people would have appreciated it a lot more. It would have been considered a beautiful shot. But today, with the baggage that comes along with every click of the camera, and with little 8-13 year olds watching with baited breath unready to process it all, it crossed an inappropriate line. It was a mistake.

Disney's towering hypocrisy knows no bounds! They exploit the kid to sell ads for all kinds of junk, while selling magazines is "manipulation". Where do these people go to school?
