School ought to be hard. We don't do children favors by softening standards and then sending them out into a harsh world. I always took the hardest classes from the hardest teachers, and now I can deal with the hardest of situations. So can my siblings, who were raised similarly. And, when she's a bit older, so will my daughter. She mouths off to a teacher, I will personally take her to task on it.

I've been reading these very thoughtful comments and I find this discussion fruitful. I am a city officer and I happen to be Black and highly educated. It's okay don't be afraid, because i'll have you know that as a Black man with all the hurtles it's almost imposible to obtain success. I attended predominantly white institutions who's administrators would look for and create any reason to hold you back. The help is not there for Black students and i'm speaking from experience. Baltimore City schools suffer because of the lack of dedication not only from students but the teachers as well. AA County and alot of other predominantly white county systems across america want to keep their schools a guarded system from Black families trying to get ahead. I'm by no means stating that all White people share this agenda, but particularly the elitists do. It's a deeply rooted issue in this country, I mean we are on the topic of education just open a history book if your in disbelief. Kids do behave horrible Black and white alike. But Blacks are under a microscope and must behave better and by far exceed the performance level of whites to get the same jobs get into the same schools and to live in the upscale areas. And contrary to popular belief affirmative action will not cure this my Black people. We have to work hard and teach our chilren about conducting ourselves with honor not to please white people, but as a standard of conduct for ourselves. When one Black person does wrong we all suffer. It's not like that for any other race but us. I will do my part by teaching my kids, and maintaining my 3.7 GPA in law school, and instead of bad mouthing troubled children (Black or white), I will continue to motivate and mentor them by volunteering my time at Baltimore City schools.
