I just got a replacement battery (not made by HP) for my HP zv5000 that I just purchased used. The battery came with a 40% charge. I put it in the lap top and plugged in the AC Adapter. The battery is discharging and the AC adapter is not charging the battery. I shut the computer off and left it over night with it plugged in and I turned it on the next morning to see that it still hasn't charged. I'm now down to about 10% left on the battery before it totaly dies and as you know with this computer, if you have a dead battery, you can't even use the computer with the AC adapter plugged in.
Shouldnt this be charging the battery while it's plugged in just like all my other lap tops have done in the past? I'm tempted to let it run all the way down and see what happens. I'm thinking that maybe there is a feature in the computer that conditions new batteries and requires it to be completely depleted before it will charge for the first time. I don't know....any help would be great. Please email me at smmimauhsoj@aol.com ASAP. Thank you very much.

I have been promised for almost a month a replacement battery. This is for a new business machine. Between backorders and canceled shipments, I want to send my HP back and get another Acer. Case #3219139791

Don't be so sure it's a hardware problem - it might a Vista thing. I upgraded to Vista on my 1.5 year old Dell Latitude D810. I have never had a problem charging with this machine, but as soon as I put Vista on it I got the same 'plugged in, not charging' message. I Googled the error and apparently people are having this problem across the world and across multiple laptops, from HP's, to Acer's to Toshiba's. I can't seem to find anyone with a fix so it looks like I'm tied to my AC power supply for the rest of the business trip that I'm on and then I'll be downgrading back to XP. I'll probably reconsider Vista in about 6 months, hopefully that will be enough time for Microsoft to sort their $hit out.

I tried using another battery, aftermarket 12 cell I bought on ebay, and now charges fine. Factory battery must be crap.

Oh ya, Mine is a 3 month old HP w/ vista. I read postings that OS (Vista) could be problem. I don't think you should worry about Vista because it should charge even with computer off (steady blue light).

Actually I don't think its the battery that is bad. There are too many people with different brands of laptops having this problem. Including me.
I'll have to try it again, but I think I took my battery out and put it back in again and it started working. Although its doing it again now for me.

I too am having a similar problem. I have a brand new HP tx1220us laptop. At first the AC adapter did the same thing - it would say "pluggen in, not charging". However, it would power the laptop.
After going through the array of potential fixes including:
1. Upgrading the BIOS 2. Doing a manual power drain 3. Unistalling the Microsoft AC Adapter Driver 3. Checking battery health
It now will charge while on the xb3000 base station, but the AC adapter while plugged into the laptop directly does nothing. No charge, doesn;t even recognize the adapter. I tried another adapter - same problem.
HP insists it is a problem with the adapter though - not sure how that could be since I've tried two.
I doubt that it is a hardware issue since the laptop is only days old and has not suffered ANY trauma, not even a slight bump.
I am betting that there is a VISTA issue recognizing the hardware but cannot be sure.
If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Same problem here. Bought an HP DV6449us notebook 3 weeks ago and battery is not charging when it is plugged in. I took the battery out and put it back so it helped. Now it's not charging again. When running the battery check (HP Total Care) it says my battery is old (3 weeks?) and I should replace it. I will contact HP if they will send me a replacement. Anyway, the standard battery is a joke, lasts only an hour. I may be forced to order a 12-cell.

I got my battery charging again by turning off the computer and removing battery. While having the battery removed and the ac adapter plugged in, I restarted the computer and waited for Vista to get the icons loaded. I then plugged in the battery and the OS detected the battery and it started charging again. Hope this helps!
