In some states (California comes to mind) gas stations are required to provide free air to gas customers, though not to those who just drive in for air. All you have to do is request that they activate the air pump following your purchase and they flip a switch inside the station. This also has worked for me in Utah but today (6/2010) in the Chicago area I was refused by a gas station attendant who apologized and explained that the independent company that owned the pay for service air pump ($1.00) removed the "free" switch a few years ago. Does anyone know about Illinois law?
