Continental Abandons Merger Talks With United

Continental Airlines said Sunday that it had abandoned merger talks with United Airlines and was planning to remain an independent carrier, a blow to lengthy efforts by United to find a merger partner.

Very happy to hear that! I would have hated to see UAL merge with CAL. UAL has a more elite product catering mostly to elite travelers...while CAL stuffs it's passengers into a sardine-like ecomony. CAL has a 2 class service and UAL has a 3 class service. CAL caters more to leisure travelers/vacationers. In the end both would be best to stay apart. UAL has the Asian market that no other has besides NWA. It's a gem of a marker and I would hate to see it given to an airline like CAL (CAL was the demise of Eastern Airlines and is only what it is today because it "ATE" Eastern with the help of Frank Lorenzo) CAL definitely has some ugliness in it's closet and is currently enjoying an upswing. Airlines all have upturns and downturns it's what airlines are all about...UPS & DOWNS. UAL is down at the moment due to greedy management that doesn't want to run an airline. UP is the next direction for UAL. It's time to fly!

I gotta say I'm a little disappointed that the merger idea fell through but a little relieved as well. The consolidation period would have been painfully expensive and bitter.

Let's see if UA is serious about courting USAir again although I see very little advantage in this alliance vs. Continental other than east coast presence along with PHX and LAS. The western USAir hubs are low-fare-oriented and United has been focusing on higher margin markets. The PHL hub is useless to UA along with the A330's. A stronger CLT hub could really cause DL/NW fits which might be fun to watch.

Now that USAir has separated from ALPA, the pilot merging issues could be very interesting. Think ALPA will be nice to the USAir guys?

NYCjetz, your arrogance and unrealistic view of UA is the suicide that the industry needs. Thank you.

Merging our great Continental with United would have been a massive mistake. I agree with our managements decision. Best to wait it out, let United dig it's own grave and then pick up what is left over in a fire sale.

I think people have forgotten how nasty and cut throat United was to Continental back in the 90's. I for one would be happy to see them falter and fade away into the realm of forgotten airlines.

all the US carriers will go to to the dogs! They are all useless and cannot compete in the global market as they will never be able to offer truly global sandard service. Foreign carriers will definitely take over the US market for the benefit of all. Let all of you who "love" your airline of choice enjoy these last days. Also u may all want to try to fly Emirates, Lufthansa, Singapore, ANA, Virgin, Qantas, Air NZ etc, etc.. see what flying is all about! De-regualtion took away the glory days of PanAm. Eastern, TWA, etc when the USA set the standards for air travel. If amybody "loves" Continental's service vs United's ve Delta's vs Americans' or US Airways' etc..then obviously you're just a sheltered american that has never ventured out of your cocoon. There's a world out there and they're all "doin it better" MUCH BETTER! Eventually foreign ownership WILL happen and then the smart foreign carriers that own all the amerian messes will take over the far reaching routes and keep the american services confined to the USA where they belong with the lower standards of the USA.

NO I'd sy that with 200K miles that I fly each year aorund the globe I choose UNITED for the fact that they have lie flat beds in FIRST and in Business. The inflight crew is usually very friendly and accomodating, the food has gotten much better, in fact quite good. The customer service at the Red Carpet Club is excellent and treats me very well. United Airlines has the reach to Asia that suits my schedule and most importantly United Airlines belongs to the Star Alliance which is by far the best alliance and I gladly fly it around the globe as a very happy customer. Although I like United Airlines as my US carrier of choice, I would always opt out for a Star Alliance member because the foreign carriers are incomparable to the US carriers. I have an international business and it takes me everywhere imaginable and I have flown millions of miles. I have tried Continental, Delta, American and Northwest. I live in NYC and I prefer to connect and to keep on United because I feel it has a superior product to the others. It's a shame that their management doesn't know this.

I said it before and here it is again. Merge all the carriers into one giant outfit and call it STARFLEET COMMAND. James T. Kirk can be CEO and Spock can handle customer service.

Hmmm u travel the amount that I do and then post ur opinion. I'm very certain you would opt for foreign carriers over US carriers and of course a nice bed in frist or business class?? So if it's a US carrier u choose to sit/sleep on a UAL seat or any other uncomfortable US carrier's seat. At least UAL has Economy Plus in the even that first and business is full...u still get the leg room! Go right ahead an "love" your favorite airline. I don't have a favorite...I just go with the best product available for my own comfor and convenience! Nothing important or high about that. Just innate self preservation!

Why pay for corporate jet? A first class or business ticket is a lot less than a corporate jet and the Star Alliance schedule is excellent. Why waste the fuel and pollute the earth?

First, I do not have to travel at ALL to post my opinion....Secondly, YOUR certainty on what I might opt for fails to surprise me, and takes me right bact to my opening statement. And in your last sentence, could you have meant "inane" self preservation?

This guy is reliving ancient history. UAL's books were not good enough for CAL to consider. The management at CAL did not want a drain on its books by hooking up with a junk airline
