GM had to pay hefty penalties to back out of the deal. Let them suffer. Those punks are Oriental and not American. I give them nothing.

That is true. Both companies were contractually obligated. GM owes them nothing. Maybe they can beg for some California tax payer money. Nope on the other hand…

Toyota will gladly pay severance to those workers, whom all will never purchase a GM product again. Nothing like buying customers, and Toyota will gladly take on the increased market share.

You can keep taking cheap shots at GM, but I for one think they are pulling through this mess and will be just fine. There – positive opinionated writing. You take the low road.

GM has enough issues with the West Coast, turning their backs on Americans is not the right thing to do. This is the revenge effect of GM's bankruptcy. To brag that Toyota is left to deal with the severance is disturbing. The reality is that 5000 people are going to lose their jobs, and Toyota is transferring production to Texas and Canada because of it. GM is just plain killing the model produced there.

That’s the biggest crock of SH I’ve heard all day. Either you don’t know jack about NUMMI or you’re just playing these uneducated posters to your advantage. GM never shared equal profits form the plant. You seem to forget the funding for NUMMI was 50/50. Most of the transmissions, engines, and imported components were sourced from Toyota and they reaped the profits for those components. Further, Toyota had control of parts pricing. They would sell a Vibe powertrain for an elevated price and the profit went straight to Toyota’s pocket. GM got duped in the whole process and I’m glad they aren’t paying for a single cent. What’s the reasoning you give for GM playing the role of “pay for our plant and we’ll let you watch?”
Regardless, both parties were obligated by contract, and the conditions were fulfilled. Toyota’s workers get nothing. If they have a problem with that, they should go right back to Toyota and moan, not GM. For you to get on here and post a bucketful of misleading rhetoric is disgusting

Nice try. Let's get back to the truth.

GM invited Toyota. "The workers helped the factory become a milestone for Corporate America as the nation's first automaking joint venture. The NUMMI way was deemed cutting-edge. General Motors hoped it could learn new tricks from Toyota and revive GM's ossified procedures."

GM backed out of its obligations at the plant and left Toyota holding the bag and all the expenses for severances, health benefits, environmental clean up and all other costs regarding the closing of the plant. GM basically said "Screw the workers and screw the plant because we're declaring BR, so we don't have to pay sh*t."

Even after sharing the plant with Toyota, GM still never learned anything as you can tell by their decline in marketshare.

Remember that the NUMMI plant was originally a GM plant. GM courted Toyota to teach them how to build cars. GM didn't like what they saw, and tried to stuff Toyota with a bill at the end of dinner.

In the end, all of the GM workers there are gone. Toyota shifts production to San Antonio and Ontario, Canada. Toyota picks up market share, and GM loses.

I Am 100% certain that you have never worked day one in the automobile manufacturing industry. Please don’t forget GM paid huge concessions to pull out of the operation. You are getting blindsided by what you read. Furthermore, GM and Toyota met to discuss these very issues prior to the pull out. You are being duped by over zealous reporters. They get no more money.

If GM lives up to it's obligations to the Nummi plant and its employees I'd be very surprised.

You think I know him? That we're drinking buddies or something? I don't know him, but I know we agree on many points and one of them being how you are the ultimate spinster of stories.

Duh! BR allows them to just "walk away" if the want to. That doesn't mean they fulfilled their obligations.

"GM would likely evaluate all of its deals — all relationships, joint ventures, partnerships, and contracts — to determine which ones are profitable for the company, and which are not. For those that are not beneficial to the company, GM would try to use the benefits of bankruptcy to get out of those arrangements."

Exactly!

In the end, severance is a small price to pay for Toyota to consolidate manufacturing into existing facilities, increase production absorption, shed excess capacity, rid itself entirely of the UAW, and conquest more market share from GM.

That we can all agree on.
