In reference to a trade, sure we need trained people not all H.S. students are going to make to college and the next best thing is to learn a trade. I tell my students to take advantage of the trade classes my school has. If some still want to go to college I tell to check out a community college that has associates in a technical field.

It is about a job...the more you learn the more you earn. I earn more due to my degrees and hopefully I will start my PhD this fall and when completed it will give me the opportunity to move up in my field. However, I do agree in enlightenment and being well informed. I tell my students that with the exception of many geniuses there are informed, well versed subject matter experts in their fields of expertise. I was lucky enough to learn a trade in high school and when I joined the military I worked in the electronic communication field and later moved into instruction and now teach as a retired vet. I am so into education either in the arts, science or just to learn a skill.

A good college education used to be an automatic pass into American middle/upper middle class. Sadly, this is no longer the case.
